If you have a stiff lower back in the morning (and not a disc problem) where you feel tight bending forward to tie your shoe laces or sit down first thing - then I’ve got 4 absolute 'gold' stretches for you to do. Usually the stiffness happens on holiday or from change of circumstance where you may be in different beds but also - doing less exercise and less abdominal work. This makes the back tighten up and also tends to increase neural tension through the back legs, so I’ve got 2 extra stretches to add on to help you with those problems as well. Make sure you follow this up with getting back into your core work to stop if stiffening up the first place.
1. Lumber Rotation
2. Glutes - wall/sofa
3. Book Opener
4. Child's pose
5. QL stretch
6. Double Leg Floss

Dear Tim- You have been a guiding light for me as I struggle through disc degeneration. I'm a middle-aged gardener in NYC who recently was diagnosed with a moderate to severe herniation (l3/l4) along with mild to moderate at pretty much every level of the lumbar spine. I tried to get ahead of it months ago....but i find myself in the middle of planting season with constant terrible lower back problems. The system just moves slowly. I've been doing a ton of core work and physical therapy (PT). I have a physiatrist (MD) at one the best physical / sports med clinic in the city (Hospital for Special Surgery). Yet there is a huge diagonostic and palliative gap in treatment. Its basically: 1. go to doctor with flexion induced SIJ and hip pain 2. get prescribed core work and leg PT. 3. flexion intolerance improves but neuropathy doesnt go away 4. MRI 5. Injections I never get a diagnosis other than "you have a bulge at L4". My physical therapist doesn't do any flexibiliy, mobility or palliative things. Granted I've been doing core work and I have a physical job so perhaps he thinks strengthening is the way forward. But I see you working with your patients who have "acute disc injury". It seems that they are atheletes and you are taking them through various steps of recovery. Anyway....do you have a recommended videos for someone like me with mulitple level moderate herniations with a physical job to add as part of therapy?
