I like to see this (strict press events), to see how strong weightlifters are, about brute force! While snatch & clean & jerk are also a lot of technics (despite they require, of course, deadlift, squat, shoulder press skills). It's sad "clean & press" is no longer among the weighlifting competitions. Would have been better to allow it but unvalidate bad press by referee depending on back angle (for people who bended too much their back in order to include more "pectoral power"). Just like bench press where people bend like an arc of circle and press (crappy bench from my opinion) on a very short amplitude is allowed, I do not see why clean & press could not be... Weird decisions from people in charge!

Great concept. It would be awesome for the person on the mic to cue each lifter by saying "set" in which the lifter brings the bar to the rack position, then say "lockout" so that the lifter physically locks out knees before executing the strict press. Some lifters got away with a bit of leg drive on their lifts, some lots others not so much but this would be an awesome way to level the quest for the strongest strict press.
@wayneparker9331
@wayneparker9331 6 жыл бұрын
I suspect what you observed was why there was so much controversy back when this was an Olympic lifting event and that's one reason why they dispensed with it. Lots of arguments between referees and coaches about whether athlete so-and-so did or did not have their knees locked out when they started to press overhead, etc. I can almost hear the arguments/debates in my head.

The term “clean” refers to a way to get the bar clear of the floor and up to the shoulders, without soiling the bar by touching the body on the way up, as required by the rules in place several decades ago. when I first read this from starting strength, I was like:" Rip, WTF are you talking about? how are you supposed to get the bar to your shoulder without it touching your body once? this was awesome. I love it for a competition idea. personally I would have made it a muscle clean followed by a strict press because that's way more strength orientated and opens up the comp for non Olympic weightlifters, like strongmen. also because they don't require high amount of technique and have a smaller learning curve you could dish out challenges to top level bodybuilders and powerlifters to help the comp grow

That is impressive, but if you saw serge redding strict press 228 kilos back in 1971, now that was impressive.

It was a great time. Look up Leif Jensen pressing around 170kgs in the olympics of 1972 at around 82kg bodyweight too. The press is such a badass lift. It's great that guys like Klokov bring it somewhat back in fashion.

The judges are way too kind.. many of them utilize the stretch reflex and don't press it from a dead stop. I hope they have more strict rules and judges the next time

If you're talking about the leaning back, that was the reason they took the lift out of the Olympics. Lifters were doing that with 500+ pounds. They bent back so far it looks like they actually squeeze themselves under the bar.

Many of these viewers aren't aware of press records prior up to 1972.Yes it was Olympic press then but those guys also did strict presses.Russ Knipp USA 75kg class former US and world record holder could out press Klokov!

Olympic lifters rarely do any pressing because lifts are pull,push with legs to get overhead in jerk followed by lockout.

Klokov is four times stronger than me in absolute terms(I can press 41kg). However, if we take in consideration his age(37) and bodyweight (105), and my age(73) and bodyweight (80), then by applying the Sinclair-Meltzer-Faber formula, he will be just twice as strong!
