VINCE GOES FISHING

Күн бұрын

My buddy Edward from @hook2cook talked me into meeting him on the sandy west-facing beach this morning to cast and crank jerkbaits in hopes of catching Striped Bass and Perch. Glad I did! I really enjoyed fishing! Within 10 minutes I whacked a nice striper, and then later in the day the fattest surf perch we’ve ever seen! I LOVE casting the Battlestar 115 Jerkbait with my new Okuma SST Medium 10’6”. Even better… setting that hook! #BENDO

Last Saturday my wife hooked up a 24.5 striper Cayucos on mussel. Man it was a blast.

I’m fish morro bay mid July this year. Will the stripers still be around and biting that time of year?

First! I’m eyeing that 10’6” SST. I notice that the lure rating is only 3/4oz, compared to the 9’ at 1oz. Is the 10’6” noticeably softer than the 9 footer? I have a 9’6” ML Celilo rated for 1/2oz and am able to throw 1.5oz Carolina rigs. I’m wondering if the 10’6” SST could handle 1.5 or even 2oz jigs

Yeah the Okuma 10’6” 3/4oz SST is softer than the 9’ version. I have chucked 1.5oz Carolina rigs with it but I think it’ll feel better with 1.25 or maybe 1oz so I’ll try that next. The 9’ which is rated up to 1oz can cast the 1.5oz Carolina rigs no prob. But I think I might end up preferring 1.25oz or 1oz better anyway. Save a little shoulder on those long days

@@VINCEGOESFISHING Thanks. I’m looking for something that will cast jerkbaits up to 2oz lures for stripers. I know the Hawaiian can do it but I’m not digging the color. The 10’ Rockaway SP looks good but the rear grip is too long and cutting it might make it too tip heavy. Right now the SST 9’6” M or H is the closest thing to what I’m looking for
@VINCEGOESFISHING

@@G3Steve The Okuma SST M 9' is underpowered for throwing 2oz. Maybe the MH or H might work, check the specs. This one might work for you: SST-S-992H-CGA it's H, 9'9" rated to 3oz and moderate action. That Okuma Rockaway SP 10' with cut butt, is a decent option.. That rod is very light in the hand, and cutting it does not throw it out of balance. My only complaint is, too stiff for striped bass. For those big heavy headshakes, you want a rod that bends, so the Okuma Hawaiian 10'7" is really the best choice for what you want to do. I have owned that rod so I know. You can also cut the butt down a bit like I did. You could get it in Pink JK lol... Actually.. can't you just paint it any color you want? I would look into that cuz I'm sure it the best rod for the job.

People ask me to please catch one for them, and I’m more than happy to give a gift, but honestly I’m not entirely comfortable with it cuz I question if they are really safe to eat. So that’s how I feel about it currently.

@@VINCEGOESFISHING Maybe young stripers under 24" are OK? Not much time/life to "accumulate" toxins. Older, "big" ones can be unfit.
@VINCEGOESFISHING

@@ronmodafferi8202 Well, I don't know for certain if any of them are highly contaminated with toxins. It's based purely in my theory that the new breed of stripers which are adapting, residing, and breeding in southern freshwater outlets/estuaries spend the first number of years in those fresh water bodies because they are trapped there during drought years, waiting for enough rain and/or high tide/surf to get the opportunity to escape into the ocean. I personally don't feel comfortable eating anything that spent any amount of time living in one of these southern estuaries which are highly polluted by farm, industry, and city run off. I ate about a dozen striper out of Ventura before I realized we were catching them 12 months a year, and I caught a baby one, and that's when I put this together in my head and decided I am not eating those any more. In 2023 we had incredible spring rains, and then suddenly there were tons of stripers in the surf, which in my mind confirmed my theory. Lately I have been seeing a number of these stripers that seem to have "injuries" which appear as deformations. It looks as if something bit the fish and then spit it got away. But I took a closer look at one of these fish I caught and it looks to me more like skeletal, developmental.. I wonder if perhaps the prolongues exposure to these pollutants is causing these deformations. I wouldn't eat that. Is this all in my head? Well... I'm playing it safe.

@@VINCEGOESFISHING Vince, Thanks for the lengthy reply. Your theory on fish being restrained in streams by drought caused low waters and being exposed to all those contaminants for longer periods makes tons of theoretical and biological sense, too. Perhaps, DF&G should do some sampling. But some groups may not want it. I, now, pretty much shy away from lake fish thinking ocean ranging fish may be "cleaner". But stripers can now be more a fresh water fish than salt water fish.
