That ring gear pattern was terrible, the heel/toe was off and you were taking the pattern off the flank side when your desired pattern is supposed to be on the face side and look like a small oval circle that has left a hint of yellow paint in the center of the gear tooth. Rule of thumb face/flank=move the pinion (different thickness shim behind the pinion bearing. Heel/toe=move the carrier bearing shims keeping in mind to have a bit of case pressure on the carrier bearings.

So rad to see this. I own a '96 and swapped in a GM L33, T56, Borg Warner 76 mm turbo, tubular k member with wisefab steering angle kit out front, holley terminator x, 4.11 gears and welded diff, KW coilovers, simple cage, a lot of weight reduction and now it's a 3190 pound 636 wheel hp drift car and NOBODY knows what it is. Most people dont realize how amazing the car actually is. Basically a longer, uglier mustang with IRS. Shit that dog will hunt in my book. Most SN95 parts bolt right on but the fact it's wheelbase is quite a bit longer than a mustang allows it to be much, much more forgiving and fun to drift. I built my first drift car at 17, I'm 32 now. I've built 13 drift cars and I'm by far the happiest with this one. I'm saving for a voodoo engine and a quaife sequential right now. Itll be the only one in the US.

What a great project car! Love that style of T-Bird. My dad had a 77 and he was very proud of it as it was his first nice car. He passed away in Feb of 1980. I know he would have hated the early 1980's T-Bird. He would have loved this 1997. I know he would have bought this streamlined design. Making this bird a sleeper is one fantastic idea. Sure wish Ford would bring a version of this design back. They should consult you folks on the build.

@@brucedressel8873 2v sohc vs 4v dohc, but yes the "cobra" motor in the Mk VIII was great in it's day. Not a great match for the rear end ratio... All the power at the top end and a car that does like 60 mph in first gear.

140k miles is nothing. There's a guy I know from Texas that used to drag race his 97 on the stock short block for 300,000 miles.

I hate to tell you but the 300 I6 is an old motor as it came out in the late 50's and it's only 292 cubic inch's !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There was NEVER a factory backed or built 427 Thunderbird. EVER. Other than the 430 MEL offered in the "Square Birds", the 390 was the largest engine offered up until the 1966 Q Code 428.

This is interesting. I had a '96 Cougar and was part of TCCoA and I know for a fact that after market suppprt for the MN-12 is very small. I miss my Cougar but I have replaced it with a '87 5.0 Tbird and an ,86 T-Top GT with 80k miles. The Tbird is in the build stages for auto x and road course.

I really appreciate it and I was wondering what engine would you put to make a 3.8 a sleeper

The 89-97 Thunderbird ran on the MN12 chassis with IRS. It was not Fox based.

The mn12 IS fox based

No it is not fox based. Different suspension, wheel offset, shock towers, engine bay, low mounted gas tank under rear seat, interior completely different with shifter sitting much further back. AWD prototypes were made and tested as well.

It was fox in the 80s to study and give way to the superior MN12 platform in the 90s.
@eriv47355 жыл бұрын
I never said they were identical but the mn12 is in fact BASED off of the fox platform

The closest I ever got to owning a T-bird was a Bronco II with a swapped in 3.8l from a t-bird. That thing flew. It was that way when I bought it. The power broke the overdrive in the 4 speed auto though (so it was only a 3 speed). The trans never gave me issues though. Back then gas was cheap (hovering around $1 per gallon) and the county I lived in didn’t have emissions (it does now). It wasn’t bad for buying it from a junkyard.
no one else going to call them out on that horrible gear pattern?!
@D3thM3tal5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that wasn't even remotely close! You can often get away with re-suing some of the shims, but the diff shouldn't just drop into the housing like that.
@AnonyMous-jf4lc5 жыл бұрын
I did. GROSS! When making an extreme ratio change, sometimes the pinion shim doesn't work. I take the original bearing, and with a die grinder, open up the center so it slide easily on the new pinion. Doing that allows you to change the pinion depth shim without pressing the bearing on/off repeatedly.
