I literally just was saying yesterday: Either “the mother works entirely too much and the child(ren) yearn for that absent parent and it shows in their behavior or a mother be a stay at home mom, and be present for her child(ren) but society bashes her!” Like damn, being a single mother is beyond hard. But I can’t stand when they put so much responsibility on their children, not leaving room for them to actually be a child. Then putting so much adult responsibilities on a child then yell “oh you think you grown” does a lot! To a young girl’s mental! When all they want is to be a kid! In this cruel world! This was a very great movie! Great job! 👏🏾

Great story! Main character never lowered her self esteem & sophistication. (No profanity! No seductive dress) She demanded respect from the 1st boyfriend. I love how she put her mom 'in check" after getting her acceptance letter.. "I'm not the mom!" "Let me be a kid!""

This movie was really really good!!! it deserves an oscar!!!! am so happy that She got to Yale even though she didn't have her biological father,her counselor was her true father . And the classroom scene on the experience as the only black girl was on point!!

I wish that I had a better guidance counselor in high school. I got directed to an art school. My Math grades were so so. I liked Math and ComputerScience, and Physics but I had too many distractions at home. I only followed my dreams to a certain point. My best bet was to leave the area where I live now. This place didn't always have good transportation. The job service used to try to send me to hotel jobs to make up beds. I used to rip up the papers. Heck I make up my own bed. I couldn't sit in high school, then studied hard just to grow up to be a hotel maid and housekeeper.

This movie brought me to tears seeing a young lady struggle makes me think about the pressure I put on my own kids but now I look back and wonder how different their lives would have been. The brother reminds me of my oldest son always handling siblings life problems, her brother would have still been alive. Girls, needs their mother's love & to be a young helper taking on more then enough but coming out of top says a lot and this movie title is all that & more. I hope the younger one learn from all what happened and made a strive to do better.

Great story. I always love any movie Danny Glover is in. The girl "Kalani" was awesome. Her mother was very selfish and tried to pull her back from her dreams. She had to overcome a lot of adversity but hard work does pay off..she didnt choose to play the victim card like many people do who come from low income areas. It was quite refreshing to hear the proper use of the English language being used to. Thats not normal in a Harlem based movie.

Such an inspiring story. I lost my mom to cancer in May 2023. This movie hit some emotional cords but uplifting at the same time. Danny Glover as the counselor was amazing. No...mental health breaks and counseling is not just for white people. Kelani striving and following her dream to attend Harvard was how she honored herself and her brother. Such a well done movie. Hmmm! STRIVE!!! Giving up is not an option! very thought provoking movie, I shed a tear a few times watching this, K is a really strong young lady. Hmmm life life life!!!the mother was so insensitive initially, I'm surprised that she wanted K to b responsible for d kids her siblings instead of going to yale, c'mon she's d mom, damn there wear so many parts of d movie that almost got me crazy. But in d end, it ended so well, I'm glad she got into her dream school! Hmm, in this life, we just have to b strong, persevere and stay focused, to reach that goal... Great movie, I highly recommend it!

This is very standard in lower income neighborhoods in America. Parents are overworked and underpaid, which makes them very cranky... And codependent on the older children to help raise the family. It's a systematic form of oppression which ensures they stay in shackles for as long as possible to recreate the same cycle of early parenthood, and therefore poverty by default for most.

I love this movie because it was very dimensional, in that the young woman of color was driven even though her farther was absent, and the fact that she followed in his foot steps to strive to get a higher education and despite racism and injustice and ignorance of the many people around her she still rose above with love, integrity and hard work. Her brother and the other young man lived by the sword and unjustly gained their money that of which only put their communities in great peril. The family also didn’t have a support system from the extended family which is all to real for me. I hope that people who see this movie will work harder on their own individual lives to be a blessing and not a curse to themselves and communities and that takes God teaching you about His love for you individually which will grow from inside out and has nothing to do with book smarts either. Great movie, I hope to see more please!

Awesome movie as it showed the adversity that she overcame but also showed the despair and hopelessness that others faced. Her brother and the man that was seeing her sister are good examples of choices made but it also points out the hurdles people in those communities have to avoid, no planes or ships to bring drugs into their communities but some how it finds its way coming from foreign lands that most in those communities will never set foot in, but rural and suburbian American streets are paved in roads where dreams aren't restricted with hurdles that have been placed in they're paths intentionally. The game of LIFE is so unfair but you can only play the cards you are dealt so you must play them well and understand that LIFE isn't fair so stay focused and on your course
