Grimmjow was never a Vasto Lorde. His subordinates wanted him to be Vasto Lorde but he never did. They never made it clear who among espadas are the Vasto lordes. There will be flashbacks of Espadas meeting Aizen. Keep an eye on who had humanoid form. You will get your answer ;)

Just to clear up a couple things: Mayuri vs Uryu happened the episode after Yoruichi first explained about Bankai. Mayuri's is the first bankai we ever saw. From what I remember in Grimmjow's backstory, his group told him they believed he was the only in their group who had the potential to reach Vasto Lordes, but I can't remember if he ever actually got there. My guess is he didn't. But he was likely near the top level of Adjuhas. I think the battle with Aizen was mentioned to be around Winter because that's how long they believed it would take for Aizen to find enough Vasto Lordes to fill the top 10 Espada ranks. Which is why 7 and below seem to be so weak in comparison to what we've seen from Grimmjow and above.

It's a pretty cool touch that both Rukia and Byakuya both use a lot of Kido. And Byakuya was shown using that immobilization technique when Renji first released his Bankai, so it was a purposeful parallel when Rukia did it against Aaroniero.

Just a little bit of clarification, Ichigo never beat Byakuya. Byakuya released his sword/turned it into the petal form right as Ichigo attacked. A lot of people were confused by that. Byakuya caused a willing "defeat" so that Ichigo could di what he could not and that was save Rukia (Though Byakuya got involved anyways once Aizen was revealed as the mastermind)

Zommari was extremely interesting but given such a 1-Trick Pony ability and disposed of so easily, its one of the few characters alongside Aaroniero that got wasted. His ability felt weird even by Hollow / Espada standards, even his death with him being engulfed in black flames was something that isn't commonly seen.

One thing I wanted to say/comment about Byakuya's bankai is that he has had more time with his bankai, experience does mean something, i mean Byakuya without going into shikai, just using swordsmanship and kido type attacks is already a big problem. On top of that, his shikai and then his bankai has levels like just plain kageyoshi, senkei kageyoshi, gokei, hakuteiken, these are results of a person mastering something

So when you guys were talking abouut noritora being 8 at that time and whether he was a vasto lorde or not, at that time the espada ranking was older ranking and keep in mind back then there were very few vasto lorde so chances are there probably were only 1 without hygoku , moving on when there's a new vasto lorde it automatically goes up and takes over someone's rank straight away beacuse for example the previous 3, 4, 5, 6 werent vasto lordes (if that makes sense sorry its difficult to explain)

Remember that Espada aren't ranked on raw power but combat ability. Which just means how effective they are in combat due to the arsenal they have. Also you may want to consider that while there are Espada that were Vasto Lorde before becoming Arrancar, it doesn't mean that someone who wasn't can't become stronger than than them. These Arrancar have been around for awhile.

i think this will get more important later on the show, but you also need to consider that each espada has their own "thing" going on, they arent just all about strength and speed (brute force) ranking, with that said if you think about it number 7 againts kenpachi would be a hard match for kenpachi cause he rely on brute force, and number 7 can literally just control kenpachi limbs (he might cut it like byakuya) but kenpachi doesnt really have strategy to combat ability like that without breaking himself , in the other hand byakuya ability is basically a counter to number 7 cause his blade can move without byakuya needing to move any part of his body not to mention the blade is scattering to million pieces which is impossible to be controlled by number 7. food for thought

Yeah I mean Byakuya the most famous Captain, and head of his clan. He's strong as hell. To put it in another perspective aside from the beginning of the fight when Ichigos speed caught him off guard the only other hit Ichigo got strictly in bankai was when Byakuya caught his sword and cut his hand. HOLLOWED Ichigo, which is equal to Grimmjow (6), did most of the damage to Byakuya. Then they clashed at the end. So yeah Number 7 is going to be light work for him. As he stands right now, An Espada over 5 wouldn't mean too much for Kuchiki.

Do try to remember that characters especially those offscreen are constantly training. In particular everyone got way stronger from the start of this to current. So captains aren't what they were before. ALSO Captain level is as vague and meaningless as say Espada level. They get stronger and are all various levels of strength. Besides there quite a few Soul Reaper on Captain level. Even Soul Society Ichigo was. Its really not impressive unless contextual zeed.

I think Grimmjow would (easily?) defeat Byakuya. Remember, Byakuya struggling to defeat bankai Ichigo. While Grimm folded bankai Ichigo. And still stands up even after fighting hollow ichigo.
