A lot of marking out for something you can just eye up. All U needed was the top centerline and a bubble on the top flange to the side of the plate
@TheMetalFabGuy10 ай бұрын
Nice. So you level the top flange (with the centre line marked) and plumb the side of the plate for its tack position. ?

Use combination square to mark the holes by lets say inch and a half holes.. set your square to inch and a half .. real easy, instead of finding the centers

Mine not yours. 😉 The stanley power lock 8m tapes can look battered, especially on the outside but they last. More importantly the numbers remain and the mechanism on the whole withstands grease/dirt. But I take your point on the appearance. Thanks for watching, and all the best to you.

Can a 254 x 146 x 37kg/m beam have a end plate too?
@TheMetalFabGuy3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching Gurpiar. Any UB or UC including a UB 254x146x37 can have an end plate. What that end plate is doing would need to be calculated by a structural engineer. Thickness / Bolt size / number of bolts / weld spec So it’s capable of performing its intended job.

Never tack in the centre of your plate, the welders won't appreciate that
@TheNightHawk854 ай бұрын
It's not a big deal if you keep the tack small enough to just weld over. I did this for over 15 years as a journeyman, learning how to tack well is incredibly important. We had to hold multiple welding tickets in order to even be allowed to tack due to the size of the projects we would build. They had to be strong and free of impurities like porosity.
@jimbob85434 ай бұрын
@@TheNightHawk85I know what you're saying its not a big deal if its small and it can't be helped sometimes, but when you're doing structural its best not to get in the habit, as you don't have to most times where I work we'd have had cleaner steel for a start that was shite, and would have put a small prep on the flanges for a small butt joint, I get tested every 2 years for my different welding positions, everything has to pass nowadays mate, I'm a fabber/welder by trade 25 years but where I work now platers are on more, so I do that, enjoy it more anyway, actual thinking involved, they keep my certs up to date though as I have to weld sometimes
@TheNightHawk854 ай бұрын
@@jimbob8543I had all of my welding certs as well, Canadian? I had to do mine every 2 years as well. I worked in structural, huge projects. I had to tack in those places for strength due to the size of the parts I was putting on. We did 8mm fillet welds so I kept my tacks at around a 5mm at the largest, I would just make it longer if I needed more strength. When the welders were backed up, I had to hop in and weld sometimes as well so I totally understand what you are saying. Everything we built had to pass a full inspection as well. I was in the trade for around 25 years as well, just a journeyman for the 15 that really counted.

@@TheNightHawk85 Canadian?no mate English, how about yourself? We do mostly hospitals, big apartment complexes, schools and uni's stuff like that, the level down from bridges and large stadiums, our standard weld is 8mm but they can get to 10,12,15 sometimes, I just can't be arsed with that anymore lol, I did the journeyman thing myself when I was younger but I got snared by a blonde and she gave me 4 kids so nowadays I need stability and a steady job lol
@TheNightHawk854 ай бұрын
@jimbob8543I worked on pretty much heavy structural. Potash mine headframes, raw ore conveyer systems, bridges with custom WWF 8ft wide 150ft long made in house, also some crazy custom work that I was the lucky bastard in the whole shop that was only allowed to touch this stuff. Made some custom hinges for the head frame that had 10 inch across pins that had ~1mm overall tolerance. Canadian myself. The tickets and training I got their are less than 400 other men in the country with equivalent.

Work from centre of web not the flange turning sq around wont improve anything lol
@SouleymaneG3 жыл бұрын
You always work off the flange to center a plate because the majority of the time, beams aren't properly formed. You'll have twisted webs and flanges that are big or small on either side. During assembly the web is irrelevant, you'll always work off the flange. Especially when there are holes drilled in the beam.
@seanhannan18233 жыл бұрын
