Mark, this was a fantastic lesson and I learned so much. The fluidity and quality of your lessons are just unbelievable. The little riffs you put into each exercise make learning these techniques so much fun. Keep doing what you're doing.

Thanks for the lesson Mark first time trying strumming in general, and I was wondering if it is normal if the skin under your nail hits the stings going down because my does and it hurts. If it is normal will it begin to callus and not hurt anymore like everything else with playing the bass. Thanks Mark!

Two more to check out...Geddy Lee and the late, great, Peter Steele. With bass strumming, both Rush and Type O Negative had only bass and one guitar, and still laid down some serious sound.

Mark, I'm struggling with getting the upstroke to sound good. Are there other things I should know when doing the upstroke? I find that, even when my hand catches all of the strings on the way up, it's very hard to make it sound like when I use my nails. I'm not even sure why it works when it does. Do I need very low action? Do I just need to spend more time on it? By the way, the song I'm learning is John the Fisherman, which is mostly three-note power chords (root, 5th, octave).

Hey Mark. Thank you for this lesson. the slap riff you came up with when you were talking about your thumb not anchored sounded really sick. It was awesome. Now when I strum chords on bass, I can get the down-strokes perfectly. But when it comes to upstrokes, my fingers get caught in the strings below or in the strings I was strumming down on. So whenever that happens, it really throws my rithem off. Do you have any tips to solve this problem?
@talkingbasslessons9 жыл бұрын
+John Follis Try moving your hand back a little so the fingers aren't going under the strings. That way your finger will graze over the strings instead of popping up from beneath.
@johnfollis23579 жыл бұрын
+TalkingBass - Online Bass Lessons I think that helped. I was strumming some triTones and augmented chords and it sounded very awesome. Thanks for your help in this. Now when you were talking about using knuckles for percussive accents, which hand and which knuckles were you using?

Great stuff as usual Mark. Any chance of a slowed down version of the fast slap riff?👍
@zomenis9 жыл бұрын
If you're talking about the second riff he played, that's Tommy the Cat by Primus. You can always look up the original and just slow it down to half speed.
@zomenis9 жыл бұрын
Firstname Lastname It's a really accurate cover, but it isn't correct note-for-note. Claypool changes the way he plays the main riff so many times that it's near impossible to get it 100% right.
