@@ode4126 I might have a strategy for you. Don't focus on the end goal of having read the whole book. Just plan when you will read just the first few pages, then see where that takes you. Just like standing at the foot of a mountain and looking at the peak, it is essential that you know where to start. Once you figured out where you start, hopefully you'll fill in the rest because we usually know what outcome we want. It's the little victories that pave the way to major victories. Try setting a goal to read for 5 minutes. Set a timer if it helps. The desire is for the momentum you have built up from starting the action to push you into accomplishing more than you originally planned for. People are like vehicles in that overcoming inertia requires more energy than maintaining your cruise speed.

As a procrastinator who is also a perfectionist, I mostly procrastinate because I'm worried about it not being perfect, and if I don't start it, then it can't NOT be perfect. I know that it sounds contradictory, but it makes sense if you know what it feels like. Its not really because I'm worried about getting the blank page filled with words like in your example.

I am a perfectionist too and I know that "perfect" is such a scary standard to have. Everytime I get those anxious feelings about something I just remember a quote I read somewhere: "Everything worth doing is worth doing badly." Then I just start working on it, because it does not hurt to try. I recently looked back at my work I had done 5 years ago and realised how amateurish it seemed to me, despite me trying my best 5 years ago to make it perfect. Then I remembered how praised I was for it by my superiors and realised that the stupid "perfection" standard is only made in my own head. I hope this makes sense.

For the last year and a half, I've procrastinated everything I could, a month ago I was pissed at myself and I'm starting to say to myself that I'm "fu...." old enough not to avoid some things and keep putting them off all the time. The worst thing is that when I procrastinate, not only do I delay things I don't want to do, but I don't use the time for anything I really want to do (be with friends on vacation, for example) and instead I say, I can't, have to learn and at the end I don't spend on it much time as I would like.

All of us should make mistakes and fail without questioning our worth, that way, learning from them actually becomes easier and more valuable. I grew up, like many of us, believing that the love i receive is conditional, "if i behave well or get good grades, then my parents will love me". But the truth is, we all deserve unconditional love. So i believe that succeeding or failing at any task shouldn't be linked to self-worth or self-love.
@Mew__
@Mew__ 3 жыл бұрын
@@lilima996 Depends on what you see as "worth". In Western classical liberal culture, you have innate "worth" as a human, which grants you basic natural rights and freedoms. However, if you define "worth" as "the deserving of unconditional resource from other people", I'd rethink that. People aren't obliged to be polite to you, only to do you no harm - politeness and respect are a two-way street. So is love from a partner - a partner that must give you unconditional love will become a bitter partner unless you return it, so it's not unconditional. So is the economical value you are granted by your peers (a market won't give you money if your product isn't valuable to the market). Just some thoughts.

I’m a procastination junkie - I get satisfaction of doing things well with minimum time. When I do things ahead of time, I don’t get the feel that I’m actually satisfied with my work. It started in high school, when my long hours of studying didn’t get me the grade I was hoping - so instead I wanted to see how well I can perform with minimum independent study. It worked too well.

I'm so tired of "studying" with no purpose or goal just because society expects me to. University has just been an extension of school and only took all my energy and gave nothing of value in return. My former girlfriend and I had a 1-hour rule which meant whatever you chose to do you only had to do it for an hour. You could choose to keep doing it if you wanted to but it was perfectly fine to stop after an hour and no one would complain. Two things usually happened: 1) We felt energized after the hour ended and chose keep going. 2) We found we had overestimated how long the task would take and ended up completing it in less than an hour.

People constantly tell me, "You're SO lucky! You can do so many creative things: drawing, painting, photography, video editing, and you're such a good writer!" Most of them are the people I'm teaching to nurture their own creativity, so I internalize my unspoken rebuttal. Explaining that it would make my life SO much simpler (in terms of channeling my creativity AND increasing my skill level) if I could only do one thing, seems antithetical to what I am doing with them. Because I AM totally fucking blessed to have inherited multi-faceted creativity from Both of my creative entrepreneurial parents (each had multimedia skills), I really appreciate what you are offering!! I've already downloaded the 🐎 PDF and am giving thought to what I am going to start drawing every day!

There’s a technique that i read from a book (forgot the title) called “Don’t think, just robot”. It’s from newton’s law of motion that getting started is harder than stopping once you already started. So if you need to get up from the couch to do something, pretend for a few moments that you’re a robot and that somebody is controlling you to get up. You move each body part until you are fully up the couch without fighting against it. Once you’re up you’ll usually find that just that initial push is enough to get you moving and do what you’re supposed to.

I feel empowered when I do something really well with minimum time. And actually if I start doing something well ahead of time, I don’t get the feel that “I’ve done it really well or that I’m satisfied”. But if someone asks for my help, imma quit my procastination immediately and help them. Guess I’m an egoist procastinator...

In uni I rarely ever studied and my grades could either be shit or really good, so it made me not want to study because I didn't need to study to actually pass my classes. Sometimes when I tried studying I would get an average grade and I would feel like it was a waste of time so it just reinforced the idea that I didn't need to study, but in reality I would do it the day before an exam so of course it wouldn't be the best way to learn things. My root issue is anxiety combined with perfeccionism and fear of failure. I'm the typical case of "that kid who is really smart and has really good grades without doing anything that turns into a loser when things get more difficult".

I feel this, I’ve been trying to develop an actual long-period studying schedule as a Senior in high school. I watch the topic videos before we cover them in class and then after taking in-class and out of class work, I combine the most important things to my notes, and then the next day I review and retry problems I get wrong. Or in math, I take notes, do the problems, the next day I review the problems I got wrong the previous day and today’s work. So far it’s not that great but the 2-minute rule could help with this. TLDR: study the material right after you learn it, practice it, and try to fix mistakes afterwards.

I wonder, what is so rewarding that you would be doing instead of “wasting time” on studying? Will whatever that is actually add anything into your brain’s bank account? Learning information should be for more than just passing exams. I wish with all my heart that someone older and smarter than I had explained that to me when I was in school. School is supposed to be offering some sort of preparation for our futures, which, trust me, are a hell of a lot longer than whatever level you are at now. You are going to need it someday and are going to regret not having made the effort. Your intellect is precious. Exercise it like an athlete has to do. This is what I really need because I procrastinate in my studies for about 3 months now (only for this school year). I'm aiming good grades during 1st and 2nd quarter because I wanted to apply for senior high school and it has grade requirements so I thrived so hard to achieve that. When I'm done with it now, I felt that I have no longer a goal so I kept procrastinating until now. I'm scared that I won't maintain my grades anymore (which is for sure) so I will really try this rule hoping that it will work with me and my freaking mindset.

this is the first "motivational" youtube video that actually got me to get out of my chair and get shit done. And it was a domino effect, because after doing one thing, it lead to me doing another thing and so on- Now ive cleaned my entire apartment, finally went for a run, and planned a workout schedule for the next month, which i have been putting off for months because coming back to the gym after covid i realized that i was a lot weaker than before, which really demotivated me. Thanks for this video man.

Another diamond from Allen‘s book is „the only things that belong on your desk are supplies, reference material, decoration or equipment“. Seems kind of a no brainer, but if you knew my desk a few years back…ugh. I combined getting that sorted with the 2 minute rule. Each evening, I spent 2 minutes getting rid of a couple items. Filing them, tossing them, putting them in a more appropriate space…whatever it was. And I followed another trick from the aforementioned book which says „once you touch it, the item is glued to your fingers until you decide what to do with it“. Initially, progress is going to be slow. But worth it, I promise. Oh, and something that I have been doing at work for years now, even before the „agile crowd“ came sauntering in: whenever there is a meeting I try to establish why we are here and what the outcome should be. Including answering the question „What is the next physical thing that needs to happen to make stuff happen?“. This ensures that everyone knows who has got the ball. The worst outcome of a meeting starts with a phrase like „We need to establish“ or „We ought to look at“. Non-committed, wishy-washy bullcrap - whenever „everyone“ is responsible, usually nobody is.

My tip: for the important, long work, cut it in little bites of around 15 minutes separated by breaks of five minutes. Use a chrono if you need to. It helped me write a 875k words fanfiction, three novels and get started on a translation of said fanfiction!

Need this for school. I’ve realized that I spend so much time trying to pass the hard uninteresting classes that I barely have time for the interesting classes and as a result I don’t want to do anything. So yeah the source of my procrastination will come to an end in one month but in the meantime, gotta finish my physics and calculus homework 🙄 too bad I can’t do any homework in 2 minutes

The world is sooo focused on productivity... I actually struggled with so much pressure, thinking that having that mindset was going to help me... it just made me less productive. I would get anxious about being unproductive when I'd get sick, and my anxiety would make my recovery take so much longer... and by the time I'd recover I was already emotionally exhausted, so i could not get myself to be productive. An endless cycle. Now I know that if you're feeling down, you should allow yourself to rest, to take a lazy day. You're still valid and worthy of living even if you don't produce :)

i have been procrastinating writing a novel for like 5 years now and every time i force myself to do it, my first thoughts are how thousands of people write everyday so i have so much competition already and how some people's books never get published or how embarrassing it would be to put so much effort into something and then people criticize it for being shitty and how ultimately i will just be wasting my time :/ thank you so so much for making this video for us!

If you have trouble writing the novel, write anything else. Write an essay about a topic you have a lot to say about. Write a page of dialogue and banter for your favourite buddies in fiction. Write anything. Writing is better than not writing. Like he said at the end about corridor of success: all you have to do is either walk forward or stay still.
