Strv 103B Review/Guide, Covering Weak Flanks For the Win

Because many of you will ask the question without reading the video description, here's the equipment I recommend: 1. Binocs 2. Rammer 3. Vents So Unicums prefer Camo Net over Vents for maximize ninja'ing, although I find the Camo is so good that I'd rather have the overall benefits from Vents, especially given that you have to brawl at times in this tank, and in those situations Camo Net is useless. Also, I'm very psyched to share with y'all that I've reached Super Unicum on my original account with 100% silver ammo in Random Battles :)

congratz on the achievment Silver ammo is the way to go in most situations but i mostly carry 10 premium rounds for though situations cuz i don't wanna cheap out on Type 4 or 5 :P

10 premium rounds provides a lot of flexibility for dealing with heavily-armored tanks, especially when you're forced to engage them frontally. While I don't use premium ammo in Random Battles, it's a very powerful tool and I wouldn't discourage folks from using it.

I have just noticed that Strv-103B has the weakest armor on the lower plate (except the commander cupola), but it is only weak for guns above 120mm. The upper plate (actually a roof) is weak for guns above 150mm. So if you have German 12.8cm, or 15cm or Russian 122/130mm, you should aim only the lower plate, but if your gun is 152mm (Russian) or 155mm (US TDs), you can aim also upper part, but keep in mind the strong small plates on the left and right of the gun. So you are screwed if playing American or British medium and heavy tanks (120mm) - the only place to hit is to hit cupola if the only part of tank you see is the front. If you play against tanks with guns of 150mm or lower - hide the lower plate: tanks.gg/tank/strv-103b/model?cs=t110e5&vm=live tanks.gg/tank/strv-103b/model?cs=obj-277&vm=live tanks.gg/tank/strv-103b/model?cs=60tp&vm=live Only Godzilla and the Fridge has no problem to penetrate Strv Update: if you have guns of 120mm or lower, shoot HEAT to the lower plate - you will penetrate there too (so not only commanders cupola). But APCR from Tortoise or Super Conqueror will fail to penetrate. You need HEAT there which don't ricochet.

First :P but please do more medium and light tanks as those have the highest skillcap in my opinion. Strv isnt the scrubiest tank and it definitely needs skill to play, but lights definitely need more

Heat won't pen the upper part because it has a heat shield at the front. Unless the enemy is higher. Also The upper plate is 50mm not 40mm. Only lfp is 40 so you can bounce up to 150mm of the upper plate.

Something I’m looking forward to is maybe in the future you grinding the AMX 50B line. I had originally done very good in it and manage a 55% WR then took a turn for the worse and dropped to 47%....kinda ironic as I played the 50 120 and finished the grind with a near 60% WR. Hope this is one line you’ll consider, I find it very hard to consistently do good in it like I used to. I occasionally get that 4K+ dmg game but even those are rare. The 50B as you already know has a very high skill cap and would make for a great video I believe!!!

I actually have the 50B, I bought it a couple years ago. It's very limited in today's meta. It's huge and soft, so you have to be very careful with it.

Been loving the videos! I play a variety of classes and on some of the maps I am totally confused on how to play, can you do a video (or series) going over the maps and how they should be played?

It's so situational. I've considered doing map guides but it depends on what class and tank you're playing, the compositions, and game flow. So I try to incorporate map and game flow commentary in each video.

I am one of those people who says follow the lemming train. I say it because experience has taught me that if you don't you get isolated and overwhelmed and then die early with little damage and XP to your name. Usually the team then go on to lose woefully and I figure you might as well loses with a lot of damage and XP instead of virtually none. Having said that I rarely follow my own advice because I simply cannot bear the thought of leaving an entire flank to the enemy to take and then put us in a pincer. I usually get isolated, zerged and die then want to kick myself for doing it. Another one of my sayings is if someone does the follow me thing (especially at the start of the game) don't follow them, 9 times out of 10 they do something suicidal.

You want to delay the enemy on a weak flank but not at the cost of getting zerged. The Strv 103B has great reverse speed and can bounce shells frontally, so I knew if it got bad I could pull back.

How do you think this compares to the Russian line? I've been wanting to go up a TD line and currently am on T5 on the Russian line, but this looks so fun to play. What do you think the best TD line is in the game right now? I plan to join a clan and hopefully do some clan wars in the future so being META would help.

The RU TD lines emphasize bigger alpha, and to some extent are more brawling oriented. The Obj 268 v4 is still overpowered even after the nerfs.

Also for many tanks pushing the stronger flank is better than fighting for a lost flank. This just doesn't apply to fast tanks and especially to STRV that is very good on the defence and can make pushing a flank costly.

Norbert Korzus great points. The Strv has strong vision control, bouncy armor, and both reverse speed, so it is a good tank to stall the enemy

Yeah plus it being fast it can actually retreat where something like a Tortoise which also has armor (after buffs) + good armor can really punish enemies while defending but it can't run away if you know you are going to get overwhelmed. Strv's are one of the few tanks I go to defend flanks that are 100% guaranteed to fail.

Agreed. A lot of players run away from flanks in situations where their staying could meaningfully punish the other players without dying.

I actually see the opposite - many players defend flanks to long and fight a dying cause instead of relocating to a position where they can survive longer and help their team. Running away is a good idea since if you are dead you can't influence the battle no more.

different trees have different values, you can kinda guess by the foliage density . Pines have the most standing or fallen. There is a really good explanation on a 'tanking with science' video by 4Tankersanddog. They didn't ever just disappear, but some had very little value due to holes through them.

Always love to see this tank in action, but talking about heat. The big mesh thing does counts as spaced armour so if they cant hit you in the lower plate any heat should be absorbed as far as I know. Anyway, GZ on SU scores, well earned.

Great video and congrats on making it to Unicum. I haven’t been playing as much lately because of work and another game i just got but your videos always make me want to start playing again. The 103B was my first tier 10 and I have always liked it but I haven’t played it in months while I am working on other lines. I may have to bring it out again. Did you ever work one of the German TD lines? I would love to see you play some of those. I have not played my Jagdpanther in probably close to a year and it still has the most battles of any of my tanks.

I haven't played either German TD line. I've considered going up the paper line, as the Rhm looks like fun, but I prioritized the Swedish TD line over it. I'm not really a big TD player, as their playstyle tends to be much more narrow compared to lights and mediums.

The TDs between the 38t (which is great) andthe WT Auf Pz IV can be pretty frustrating. The Death Toaster is the Death Toaster. Not the worst TD ever but not great. It has some niche appeal. The Nashorn is not awful for a turretless TD but nothing special. The St. Emil is piping hot garbage. The Borsig was a TD I was super excited to get and then really disappointed. For me at least (and I am no super unicum) both guns were unreliable. They either missed outright or hit whatever part of the target they could not pen. I don’t play all silver but I don’t carry much gold either (usually 10). The Borsig was a rough grind for me. The WT started out the same way but once I unlocked the top high pen gun it was a much better experience. I don’t have the top high alpha gun but the pen on it is still pretty good on it. I am still pretty far from the Grille 15. I am honestly pretty excited to see a much better player than me playing those mid tier TDs although part of me is not looking forward to seeing how much it was me and not the crappy TDs. :).

Actually, relocating arties when their position is threatened is sometimes easier said than done. If they have a good concealed location, but have to cross open ground to relocate, staying might be a better option. This is especially true for slow arties. Relocating is fairly easy if you drive a French arty, since they are very mobile, but some other arties are painfully slow.

As I always say "you need to run before you need to run" - same goes for arties repositioning before they're in spotting range.

I always tell arty to move or relocate if one line lose and another line won, but when I play arty it is hard when to move or not and move to an area might get you spotted. And it is in tier 5-8 game.

Congrats on the silver ammo super unicum :) Helpful video as I recently got the ikv 90b, getting closer to the UDES. I assume it plays pretty similar to the 103B?

I hated the UDES. It has ninja camo, but the armor is 20/20/20 so any gun over 60mm in caliber (which is basically everything) will overmatch your armor. So the UDES can't brawl effectively. Whereas the Strv 103-0 and Strv 103B both have 40/30/30, and that 40mm of frontal armor with the sharp angling make it an autobounce against AP/APCR for guns of 120mm or lower caliber, so you can brawl with the tier 9 Swedish TDs. It is worth nothing that the cupola is pennable, but it's a small target.

Yes. TDs in general are a good place to start, because they require the least game knowledge to play effectively. Heavies, meds, and lights have higher knowledge requirements in increasing order.

I never follow the lemmingtrain, always try to help the other side. Being flanked and attacked in the back when not covering all sides is bad strategy. Often the enemy spots the train and takes advantage of it.

Napoleon used this tactic to great effect during his conquests of Europe, and it's called concentration of force and defeat in detail. But alas, Random players are not Napoleon, so they fail when they try that through obvious kill zone (which Napoleon will avoid), or scared that their paint job will be scratched when facing numerically inferior opposition in a location that Napoleon will just punched through and be done with it too quickly for the enemy to realize what's happening and even try to crossfire. Hence it become the lemming train as we know today instead.

It is incredible! Life changing even. It probably won't do a lot for you but I enjoy the game much more with it. You lose a bit of situational awareness naturally but it helps with pinpointing shots on cupolas :D

So I tried the extended zoom that is built into the UI settings (x16 and x25) for about 6 battles last night. I found it too zoomy, to the point where I couldn't see what else was going on around my target. So I turned it back off. Do you know offhand how to activate x16 versus x25?

You will not be spotted in Strv when fire because is the only td family (tier 8 - 10) who are not loses their camouflage when fire, unlike other tanks.

That is true, it's unique that way. Part of the thing is that technically the hull has to rotate for the gun to aim - there is no arc of movement without moving the hull.
