An informal side-by-side comparison of the brand new Strymon Iridium amp modeler to the more tried-and-true Atomic Amplifire. These are two of the best digital amp modeling boxes around, and either is a great solution if you want to keep your pedalboard but gain the ability to go direct, play on a silent stage, record quietly, etc.
The smaller Atomic "Ampli-Firebox" is actually the more obvious direct competition to Strymon's Iridium. In this video I'm using the original red Amplifire 3, but the amp models are exactly the same between the two. So this comparison would still be useful if you're considering the Ampli-Firebox.

Unless I state otherwise in the video, everything I test out on here is stuff that I bought myself. There are no paid reviews on this channel and only a couple times have I ever had items sent to me for review. All opinions are my own!

Great video. I love Atomic's amp modeling (more than Helix, close to as much as a Kemper) - I have been considering trying out the Iridium just out of curiosity more than anything else, so this video does help save me from some more GAS!

Thanks for making this video, I have owned the Kemper and the Axe and now I use the Amplifire, Mainly because I just use the amps not effects. I had to use all pre and post eqs to get it to sound really good but I'm happy with it. The iridium sounds amazing specially the low mids and basses. I do think with a lot of tweaking and getting better Ir's than the ones in the unit has, the amplifier can sound almost the same. Cool thing about the Iridium is that they already tweaked them for us, so is vey user friendly with no extra eq and things needed like the Atomic. The only thing I think the Atomic can't get is the organic sounding basses and the 'room' control, very cool feature. Once again thanks for the video. I see many channels that disregard the Amplifire but it is up there with the Axe, helix and kemper (Amp tone wise).

The Amplifire is terrific, I agree that for whatever reason it tends to get left out of the conversation compared to the other modelers but I've been using it for three years and was very happy with it. Tweaking the other blocks does help - I almost exclusively used M. Britt presets on it, precisely because he had already dialed in the pre- and post-EQs and added a custom IR cab so I didn't have to get into that stuff as much. The only reason I switched to the Iridium is the simplicity - I just really dislike messing with screens and menus and the fact that (as you said) Strymon already kind of dialed it in for us, is appealing to me. I don't like customizing IR's and plugging in to an editor and all of that.
@KYDY
@KYDY 4 жыл бұрын
@@LeFeversAudio As long as I put in the IRs I liked, I didn't find that the Amplifire needed special tweaking. And if you want the simplicity without screens and menus, the Ampli-Firebox does that too as you mentioned in the video. And as you wrote, it gets left out of the conversation... it's been out for years yet the Iridium is seen by many as the first of its kind. But the Iridium's stereo processing is quite nice to have.
@Capykiller

They are different concepts I think. The Iridium is more like the ampli firebox which gives you the opportunity to use it as an amp substitute. One can use it on its own or more likely with your pedalboard. I got all my pedals running through the firebox. I only got a clean AC15 adjusted. It sounds great. I thought about buying the kemper but now I can use the same pedalboard and can decide wether to play through my dr Z carmen ghia or through firebox.

It's amazing to discover what we've been playing for a while is flat and sterile when something better comes a long. Strymon keeps on this track and they could start to own the small format digital modelling market, especially when you consider all of the other stuff they have that they could combine with it.

Since the Iridium came out, I see a lot of people speculating about whether Strymon will someday drop an all-in-one thing. Like a super fancy Helix or Fly Rig. I kind of doubt it, myself, but I have to admit some kind of superpedal that glues together four or five of their small format pedals with an Iridium on the end would be pretty unstoppable.

Matt LeFevers I don’t know if they’d ever do an all in one thing, which is all their products in a rack unit, but a fly rig kind of thing with a few choice effects and the Iridium tech would be spectacular.
@Mist_R

They make so much more by selling them individually. If they make an all-in-one unit, imagine the price tag they need to put on that unit to match the price value of all/several of their pedals. But at the same time, it'd most likely crush all competition, just seeing how much of actual geniuses they are and having seen what they're actually capable of. They could just be waiting for the right time. But for now, individual pedals are still very much a thing.

There should be at least 10 amps and 30 cabs to pick for any of the amps. But damn does it sound good. I want a kemper but can't justify it since I have 12 tube amps. Half custom built. A crap load of cabs and speaker combos and multiple pedal boards. But now that I have a kid theres no playing my marshal on 10 at night time lol. I just wish strymon would make an iridium v2. Does Iridium need DI box and exactly in what use cases / applications?
@LeFeversAudio
@LeFeversAudio 3 жыл бұрын
It doesn't *need* one but sometimes it makes sense to use one. I run a DI when I play live, because the snake that we use only has XLR inputs so I need the Iridium's 1/4" output converted to an XLR and the DI does that for me. I've heard it can also protect the unit from getting hit with phantom power from the board, by accident. But at home when I'm recording with it, I just plug a guitar cable straight from the Iridium into my recording interface.

I’m confused. Does the Iridium need the Radial DI box in the signal chain? Since the Iridium isn’t made to feed into an amp, isn’t it already outputting a line-level, low-z signal?
@LeFeversAudio
@LeFeversAudio 4 жыл бұрын
No, I don't believe the output is line level. Your comment got me thinking so I just re-read the relevant parts of the manual... the output impedance is 100 Ohms and they seem to recommend using a DI for live applications. It's true that it's not intended to feed an amp but a lot of users do run their time-based effects after it, so maybe that's why? To allow for delay and reverb pedals to be post-Iridium. That'd be my guess.

@pangloss9 4 жыл бұрын
@@LeFeversAudio According to Strymon's website, the Iridium can output line level signals but using a secondary function: "Iridium can output from instrument up to line level and is adjustable by its LEVEL knob and Level Trim secondary function. Thank you so much for this! I've been thinking of going from the Firebox to the Iridium. I use mainly the Plexi in the Firebox into a Stereo Reverb. Occasionally the SLO model; no others . From what I've seen the Iridium can get into that George Lynch zone, whereas the AFB Plexi tops out in overdriven Angus Young territory. I love the dynamic range & clarity of the AFB, but I find their modelling of crossover distortion to be harsh & it decays too abruptly IMO. On my real amps the crossover distortion sounds similar, but more harmonic than harsh & it decays in a way that doesn't draw attention to itself like the AFB does. Was hoping the Iridium would be better. Edit: listening with headphones I can definitely hear that static, fizzy harshness in your Amplifire just like mine. I don't hear it in the Iridium. I'm sold. Please let Strymon know where to send your commission check. (FWIW, at it's price point, the AFB is the best Plexi modeler I've found so far. But it's my core tone & I want perfection, not "good enough". The Strymon sounds better to me. It better since it costs almost twice as much)

Thanks! Yeah I'm liking the Iridium a lot so far. I actually never got into the Marshall models on the Amplifire, they sounded thin and harsh to me in a way that the Vox and Fender models didn't, so I just avoided them. The Strymon is the first time I'm really diving into a Plexi sound and it's fun. And it does get heavy... surprisingly so. I'll probably still use a high gain overdrive in front for really modern metal sounds, but for more of a thrash or hard rock thing, the Strymon Plexi cranked way up would be excellent.

I wouldn't say this is a fair comparison. As others have mentioned, IRs are a huge part of the sound in amp modelers so to be fair you would have to use the same IRs in both units. Not adding any EQ to the Atomic & then comparing it to the Strymon is like giving someone an Ikea flat pack chair that needs to be put together & comparing it to a pre-made one. The Atomic is a highly editable unit which needs to be tweaked to sound it's best. The Strymon is more a "plug & play" type unit. It's apparent in your demo with the Atomic having much more low end & "thump" which normally should be rolled off for live use using the EQ blocks. I presume the Strymon has this roll off baked into the unit or applied in the cab IR to make it usable out of the box being it is not a deeply editable unit. IMO the Atomic Amplifirebox is far better value, being much cheaper, with many more amps to chose from as well as some effects in the same sized package with a very similar layout of controls. I'm sure if you bought the same third party IRs the Iridium uses for the Atomic you could get them sounding close enough to identical. Also, it's kind of misleading to say the Marshall mode on the Strymon has more gain than the Atomic as this may sway a buyer who doesn't know much about these units to prefer the Iridium when in fact the Atomic can get the same amount of gain by adding a pre-gain boost block in it's deep edit.
@LeFeversAudio
@LeFeversAudio 4 жыл бұрын
I don't disagree with any specific point you've made. When I use the Amplifire in real world situations, I run EQ blocks and custom IRs and stuff too. But without any way to know for sure what fine tuning Strymon has baked into the unit, all I could really do for this video is approach them at face value. If someone's takeaway from this comparison is that the Iridium sounds better out of the box and the Amplifire would need more customization... well... that's a valid thing to make note of. It's definitely what sold me on the Strymon, since I hate menus and USB editors. Frankly I don't have the training or expertise in amplifiers to zoom in to a granular level and try to match every speaker cab choice and EQ block and which boosts would most resemble what Strymon is doing; perhaps someone with a better ear for amplifier minutiae can take a crack at that. I approached it like, let's say I ordered both of these and the boxes showed up and I plugged them in: what would I hear?

AFAIK, Amplifire is praised mostly for its depiction of Friedmans, not for Deluxe or Vox or Plexi. IMHO its worst "fault" is needing the software editor to really set everything quickly, but it does offer heaps more in terms of amps/fx/eq and convenience for recording. For gigging, probably the simpler format is more desirable. Just add pedals that work well and done. Iridium does sound awesome, but I doubt AA cannot match it with all its options, damping settings, EQ etc. It will always be a more complex and versatile device. That said, really great simple tones from Strymon.

No, I haven't - a lot of friends and colleagues of mine use it, so I know it can sound terrific, but I was put off by the complexity, hah.

I'm sorry to tell you this but your comparison is deeply flawed. You aren't taking several important things into account. 1) The last part of the Chime model's gain range is like adding a Rangemaster style boost, so setting the controls the same will result in more gain on the Iridium than on the Amplifire. 2) Altering the mids on the Round model does more than simply cutting or boosting that frequency. Left of noon it becomes more Twin Reverb like and turned to the right it becomes more like a tweed era amp. 3) The Punch model emulates a traditional Plexi up to 2 o'clock. Beyond that it is emulating a high gain modded Plexi, so again, the gain control shouldn't be matched if aiming for an apples to apples comparison. 4) The amps on the Iridium act as non master volume amps. To simulate this on the Amplifire, the master should be at maximum.

All true points. I don't really know what I could have done differently to accommodate those first three points, so, I didn't. I realize to some extent these are apples & oranges units and the controls don't map one-to-one, but that's life. The fourth point is my bad. I would have done that if I'd known to do so.

@@LeFeversAudio I think simply mentioning these points would have better informed members of your audience that may be unaware of these facts. Without explanation or prior knowledge of these points, the comparison is a bit misleading and may (or may not) account for some of the comments saying the Amplifire sounds "flat". My second suggestion is, assuming the sweep of the controls are linear, the values be matched (approximately) by percentage of the control's travel representing the non-boosted/unmodified amp. For example, if 2 o'clock on the Punch model represents max gain of the standard Plexi, then somewhere between 9 and 10 o'clock would match the Amplire at noon (50%). Alternatively, you could just try matching key points in the gain range by ear (for example edge of breakup). Either method would offer a more apples to apples comparison than setting the controls in the same position and not accounting for the differences. I hope this helps and apologise if my comment came off as being rude.
