very cool that Strymon uses what I presume to be their top DSP engineer to market their products rather than some flashy BS marketeer sales guy. I think that gives more credibility to their great products. Another great pedal, perhaps a bit pricey. I'd probably have to try it myself.

I've gotten two Strymon pedals, the Blue Sky and Lex, and while they cost a bit more than some high end pedals, they are well worth the money. I really love the "shimmer" feature of the Blue Sky, and if you like the sound of the original Leslie rotary speakers from the 1960s, you'll appreciate the Lex. I will buy more later, but am on a budget.

I've had the Iridium for about a week now, and on boy, this thing is incredible. Even better than I had hoped. I've have lots of years spent on Fenders and Marshalls, but not so much on Vox amps. The Fender and Marshall sounds are definitely on the money. Totally sounds like a well mic'd amp/cab. I've been enjoying getting to know the Chime amp, and it's also fantastic. Swapping out cabs in the IR software is very easy and painless. I didn't particularly like the BJ cab on the Round amp, so I swapped in the 412 that usually pairs with the Punch amp, and they are awesome together. Just a tip for anyone that isn't crazy about a particular stock cab, just try one of the other 6 from the other two amps. Everything pairs well together. You'll definitely find something you like. Not even much need to buy into any 3rd party IRs unless you want to. Keeping it simple is Strymon's game and they do it perfectly here. Lots of nuance in the knobs, and takes pedals very well. I've paired it with an SP Comp, Muffuletta, Sovereign, Timmy, and Formula 5F6 dirt pedals with great success. Strymon DIG and Source Audio Ventris after the Iridium is brilliant. Can't say enough good things about the Iridium. Well done Strymon.

Thanks Pete and Strymon! I love the Iridium and use it mostly at home as a silent practice tool or recording device. Either, straight out of the box, or, sometimes feed the output of my tube amps with a torpedo captor into the iridium (amp section disabled). So the Iridium then acts simply as a cab loader, and I can play my tube amps with headphones. Also for recording, I sometimes use the Iridium with the CAB section disabled and select IRs in my DAW. Great product, a lot of use cases.

A few recommendations after spending about 6 hours with the unit this weekend. First: use Pete's demo here to calibrate your board. In other words; pause the video at the first setting he shows and set your boards output so that you have the right amount of head room. I had my Boss EQ-200 Presets all set at 50% master level. My board wasn't pushing enough volume to allow for Pete's first demo'd Fender sound with breakup (the tweed sound) to achieve breakup. I dimed my master volume on the EQ-200 and bumped the patch level EQ in the ES-5 to the max 6db. That allowed me to mimic Pete's tweed settings and pretty closely replicate the sound. Once you have it calibrated, the others are all pretty much in line. Second: Closely follow the instructions to set EXP jack to DIGITAL Mode & how to set the MIDI Channel here www.strymon.net/support/iridium/ Third: when using a midi controller to create presets (it's the only way to create presets) commit a group of banks and use the first preset to calibrate by setting the round amp on cab a with all knobs set to 12 oclock. Follow closely the instructions for Saving and Recalling Presets on Iridium with MIDI here www.strymon.net/support/iridium/ After creating the first calibration preset, copy that patch on your ES-5 to the next patch. Create next preset, save patch, then copy patch and keep on truckin in that manner. The way Strymon has this set up, it essentially requires a midi controller to "place" or "force" into the Iridiums preset locations the settings you control with the knobs. Be sure to closely follow the steps to create a preset located here www.strymon.net/support/iridium/ TIP: after creating each patch, back out of the ES-5 and the Iridium as if you have just booted up your board and test the previous patches with assigned presets up through the latest patch and preset. It's a ton oh work, but if you really want to see this pedal at it's full potential, I recommend using it in conjunction with a MIDI Controller. If it were more like say the Neunabor Neuron with the ability to create and store 6 presets without the need for a MIDI controller, I'd feel differently. As it is currently and at this price point, spending $400 to have this for 1 config based on however you have the knobs dialed in + just one "Fav" setting isn't a good value. However, couple this with a MIDI Controller and the value proposition changes entirely.
@Jedlmind4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the tips! Much appreciated! One question, Are you using the Strymon midi controller, which I believe is around $150, or something else, hopefully cheaper, to do the job?

When plugging this into a recording interface, like the Focusrite Scarlett 6i6 in my example, should you set the 1/4" inputs on the Focusrite to Instrument or Line Level? Also, should you use unbalanced or balanced 1/4" cables to connect Iridium to the interface?
@strymon5 жыл бұрын
We recorded using the instrument inputs on a Focusrite Clarett 8Pre X, however Iridium can output at line level, and you can adjust Iridium's output level using its Level knob. So, either way should work for you. Iridium's outputs are unbalanced, so you can use unbalanced (TS) instrument cables.

@strymon2 жыл бұрын
It totally depends on preference, what stage you're playing, etc. Having a dedicated FRFR speaker definitely gets you more of an 'amp' experience since you'll have a speaker behind you, but if you're going to go out of the monitors anyway, you might just want to go direct into the mixing board. @metricdeep88564 жыл бұрын
Honestly, no complaints and no regrets. I took a chance on this pedal when it first came out and I've been using it for almost a year now. It becomes easier to spot the more you have used it when using sounds you are used to. If it's a sound you have never heard before or can't A/B it then it is much harder to detect...or I am unable to. Even knowing that it's not 100% as real as an amp, it comes so close that it's a pure joy to use and it's my go to pedal when I can't cut loose with my amp...I use this pedal probably 95% of the time. I mostly use headphones with it and the stereo with reverb is nothing short of fantastic. Mostly I would recommend using it with the gain on zero when using other pedals. Typically I just use this pedal and headphones cuz I can get more of a great sound with this than I can with pedal setup and cranking my amp for some time. When the iridium gain is cranked it sounds great on it's own. It also does this crazy awesome "edging on feedback just as an amp would" thing which is really cool when using higher gain settings and headphones. I'm not sure how Strymon pulled that off but it's really cool and you don't have to deafen yourself or piss off the neighbours...it's actually sort of confusing because you know you are not running through a cranked amp but your ears are telling you the amp is heading for feedback but it holds and (good or bad) never gets out of control. I would say there is a small delay while this pedal is processing but so short that it's like your amp was just a little further away....and almost all settings I would not be able to detect any processing delay. Some setting seemed to be a little more processor intensive than others. I would love to see a version with an effects send and return so you didn't have to go "into the front of the amp". Otherwise I use this as a stand alone headphone amp and it's so far beyond anything you'll do with another headphone setup that I've heard or heard of. FYI I've never used any other profiler or cab sim....only because they all had complaints on so many KZbin vids....so I bought this and I'm very happy with it. The only thing I wanted to be different was to have an effects loop but I would only sell this if they made a newer/large format version with send/return /presets etc.

Heard several reviewers say when playing live you can send the signal straight from the pedal to front of house (into the mixer) but in your video it goes via a radial direct box. May I ask what is required to use it in a live context and perhaps also explain why (since I'm a simple gigging tube amp kind of guy with very limited technical knowledge :-).

It varies depending on your set up. If you are running directly into an interface or mixer with dedicated instrument level inputs meant for guitar or bass or other unbalanced signal sources, you probably don't. If you are in a live situation using mixers or boards that are expecting a balanced signal, or you are experiencing ground loops, a DI box might be something worth looking at. www.strymon.net/faq/do-i-need-to-use-a-di-with-iridium/ If you have any more questions feel free to email support@strymon.net! :)

Can this only be used as a direct in box or can it be used in front of an actual amp?
@strymon5 жыл бұрын
You can use this for direct recording or to a PA/mixer. It is not really recommended to be placed in front of an amplifier, but if you disable the IR Cab, you can plug this into the power amp/Effects Return of an amplifier to use as the preamp for your amplifier.

so i’m confused how to use this. i need it for 3 uses: live, bedroom headphones, and just using a speaker. So for live, I would need a DI box and XLR cable and I’d plug into the PA? For headphones I’d just plug in headphones. But how do I use this with a real speaker? Can i go into the settings and turn off the cab and plug right into a cab? (do i need a power amp kinda thing or what?) thanks
@strymon5 жыл бұрын
Hi Michael, we're happy to explain further. When using Iridium live, whether or not you need a DI depends on a variety of factors including where you are going out from Iridium to (such as into a mixer or interface, or directly into a powered speaker.) Please refer this FAQ for more details: www.strymon.net/faq/do-i-need-to-use-a-di-with-iridium/ Iridium has no power amp capabilities, so it won't power a passive guitar cab. If you want to use a passive speaker, you'd need a power amp with instrument or line level inputs (Iridium's output will go here), and then from there you can use the power amp's speaker out into passive speakers. If you're using powered FRFR speakers, you can go directly into their line/instrument inputs. If you have any more questions please don't hesitate to email support@strymon.net. Thanks!

Could you have this pedal go out to front of house etc. and use the phones at the same time like an in-ears?

Does anyone know how many IRs can be saved in the pedal (midi presets) through Strymon software? Awesome product! Cheers
@strymon5 жыл бұрын
You can save 3 IR's (2 mono files or 1 stereo file) per Amp for a total of 9 IRs loaded onto the pedal using the Strymon Impulse Manager software.

Dear Strymon, I am a huge fan, everything sounds amazing. I want to give you my money, but need it to be a usb audio device. As soon as you come out with that next amp sim pedal that is simple but allows me to plug in my iPad and practice or record, I will convert from Helix. Thank you!

Aweomse pedal! Why did you guys decide to not go with an effects loop built into the pedal?
@jasonkurth74735 жыл бұрын
BD GUITARS SERVICE would you just put reverb and delay after it in the signal chain and it will have the same effect as in the effect loop of an amp?
@strymon5 жыл бұрын
Hey Jason! Not having an effects loop was a deliberate design decision in order to provide the existing feature set in a small form factor. If you want to have effects post Iridiums preamp section, you can place them after Iridium and then go out from there into your interface, mixer, etc. :)

Hi! A video with delay and reverb pedals would be wonderfull - when going directly into a Mixer and a speakersystem on stage! And placing them them before - or after - the iridium!
