Hi Adam. What a smashing little engine. I had no idea Staurts did any four strokes. I am with others. If that engine was built up by a student in the 1930's or 40's that guy will be long gone. It wont have that paint ever again if its painted and I get fed up with stationary engines that look like Aston Martins and are all shiny. They are working machines in my view. I have really enjoyed the showman's yard in Kent and the stuff you have looked through. I cant watch any of the Methwold videos as my dad died a couple of years ago and he loved working there along with my Aunt and Uncle from Brandon who used to do the Easter sales with him. That little red oil can brings back memories. They were called something like a valve oiler. As a school leaver I worked on the American Air Bases in Suffolk and an old boy had one which was his fathers. Its perfect for those little oil holes in older machinery without flooding oil everywhere. I recall him mixing SAE 30 and a little paraffin together for the oil can. The new house and shed looks the business.

Wow when you spun that flywheel and it just kept on turning , The friction value must be extremely low was the flywheel and shaft Dynamically balanced by any chance , and that was in a dirty condition ,

The spark plug has been filed in that way for a reason, it looks like the threads are exposed to the combustion process so would get encrusted with carbon making it extremely difficult to remove the plug without damage. As for paint, LEAVE IT.

good to see you back in the new shead dont paintit leave as it is adam

I wonder if the spark plug thread was ground off because carbon build up? Might make it really difficult to remove.

When I do valve lapping with a drill I find it easier to slip a bit of rubber tube (3 or 4 inches) on the valve stem, grip the other end of the tube in the drill. Gives a bit of wiggle/flex and smooths things out a bit. Don't paint it, lovely as is.

Can run these on gas or petrol just check when you took the crank of one of the studs looked slightly bent the one that wouldn't come out just check any news on the perkins engine up the cafe ?
@skankingiant9 ай бұрын
You're a bit off with your info. 1913 would have been a different open crank, the 1/2hp and 1/4hp open cranks had an atmospheric inlet and a under slung rocker for exhaust. The Sandhurst was introduced during the inter-war period. About the machining, only the top deck was machined by Stuart here is the advert info: The Crankshaft, Con-Rod, Bearings, etc., can be made of plain bar material, but Piston Rings and Valves are supplied with the Castings - they are the work of the specialist. One piece of machining we do in every set of castings - the facing and boring of the bed to take the cylinder. It is easily and accurately done on our machine tools, but is extremely difficult in the average amateur's workshop. Magnetos weren't supplied with the engine and neither was carburettor (one that suited could be bought from Stuart) so engine can't be dated by the magneto as the builder would have fitted what was around. Not all were supplied to Sandhurst, they were available to the Civilian population, especially post WW2.

I'd leave the paint as it's part of the history/patina of the engine, very weird about the N5 spark plug, do you think they were trying to raise the compression ratio?

I would leave the paint, they are only original once. It’s a beautiful thing.

Check the thread in the cylinder head . Does it go all the way through ? Could it be a non standard plug thread and somebody has butchered that plug because of a mismatch of thread and it would only screw in a few turns before it jammed ? Don’t paint it please.

Leave it original it was be a shame to pait it. Marvellous how the old minral oil protected it for so many years and bearings ran smooth. Makes me wonder would the new synthetic oils stand the test of time. Or is the expiry date on oil bottles these days just another con 😊 👍🏴
