I'm honored that at the 0:36 mark, that photo used was a screengrab of a video I shot, which was Matt Serra's UFC video blog. When I worked for the UFC, it was my idea to follow Matt around before three of his fights. I'm honored that Stuart would use one of my shots. :)

@@stuartcooperfilms Thank you so much! I truly enjoy your films - they are works of art. Wonderful cinematography and storytelling. I worked in PR, but I had a background in film/video and I remember telling the new media folks at the UFC: "Why don't you fly me out to New York so I can stay with Matt for three days. This guy needs a camera on him at all times." Being originally from New York, it was also a way I could see my folks for three days too. Ha. But we had a ball shooting those. I started training BJJ in 2005, so getting to listen to Danaher talk about jiu-jitsu for a few hours, was an honor. I made an outtake reel a few years ago called "The stuff in the basement," but what wasn't sure if people would laugh. I reassured him that it's hysterical. I never released it. I gotta find it. Anyway, I love your stuff, brother. Please keep it up!

That is why he might be the greatest BJJ teacher of all-time. He literally devised a system based upon a statement Dean Lister told him in passing. Now it’s a revolutionary idea that will change the sport forever. Why would it matter it took him a few minutes to explain a complex matter regarding a new idea.
@razorgarcia2982 жыл бұрын
Its not that my man . It's about how a single thought can change everything if your willing to listen. Back in the 90s leg lockers were not only frowned upon. But most BJJ instructions hated them and humiliated and embarrassed guys who actively did them. Renzo and Ryan were the opposite. And I lot of time if they didn't have the time to explore a position of Submission. They would be super open to hearing from us and pushing other guys on the team to Explore it further. . That's how the Capizzi lock, the one arm guillotine. The arm in guillotine etc all came to the forefront. Silver Fox's guillotine system and so on and so forth.

This is a great detailed analysis. But I've always understood that Leg Locks can make a fighter extremely dangerous from what are typically considered "inferior" positions. Something I didn't hear him say, but he clearly knows and teaches, is that Leg Locks are also truly excellent as Counters to sweeps or other "scramble" positions where neither fighter has earned a "dominant" enough position to warrant a Pin Score

John Danaher Joe Rogan 23 May 2018 Danaher description of 4-step BJJ “system” of fighting starts at 21’30”. 1. Get the fight to the ground...why? Reduce the dangerous kinetic force of your opponent (analogy; you wouldn’t try and brand a steer standing - legs are tied first to get it to the floor; try throwing a javelin on your knees; mechanically you have dissipated their force production potential...) 2. ...Get past the dangerous legs! Think how much damage the legs can do to you. Upkicks to your head and they can be used to great effect on your arms, legs and neck... 3. ...progress now through a hierarchy of ‘pins’ or “controls” - they are ‘scored’ in sport BJJ according to the damage YOU can do to the opponent...knee on belly unstable cf. to full mount... 4. ...position secured? NOW attack with a submission (armlock, RNC, triangle etc etc) 5. Where do leglocks fit in this system? They don’t! Traditionally leglocks where done if you couldn’t apply the 4-step system! Danaher proposes analysis of BJJ from ground up or opponent behind (ie. plan your BJJ from a vulnerable position - ie think defence and worst case scenario). Dean Lister attributed to Danaher’s focus on leg locks (3 days of training)...starts at 16’45” “Why would you ignore 50% of the human body?”(18’39”)

We have 4 main joints in our legs (ankles & knees). We have 6 main joints in our arms (wrists, elbows, and shoulders). We have a neck that can be chocked or cranked. So, 4 types of submissions in the lower body and 8 types of submissions in the upper body. That is, the bottom part accounts for about 33% of the submissions and the upper body accounts for about 66% of submissions (including the best of of all submissions: chokes). With that said, yes we have to learn, drill, and go for leg locks!

it's just not intuitive in self defense for your goal to be upside down on the ground entangled with an assailant. Hence the 4 stages of BJJ prioritizing control and top position. The direction traditional BJJ was trying to go was controlling a single assailant while being able to get back to your feet and run away. The grapple game is already dangerous with more than one opponent, and Brazil is a dangerous place.
