Hello all, we’re showing some stucco mistakes in lathing, do’s, and don’ts.
This way, you can properly waterproof your stucco walls.
Lath is simply the first step in the stucco process.
First, you attach two layers of Grade D paper or two layers of 60-minute paper to protect the plywood substrate from rainwater damage.
Galvanized-steel-Stucco-Netting 17 or 18-gauge galvanized woven wire netting was used to reinforce paper for exterior Portland cement stucco walls.
You can use furring nails or more modern equipment, as we have been doing for forty years, ‘Staples,’ using an air-powered staple lath gun.
Remember, 7/8 of the leg has to be embedded into the stud, which usually means with plywood sheathing, your best bet is to buy inch-and-a-quarter crown staples with a width or crown of one inch to keep up with current inspections or codes.
Don’t over-staple the lath. Only ever 6 inches on studs.

If your going to insulate, bend them upward and insulation will hold in place. Drywall & put a oil filled thermostatically controlled heater in there. Turn it on from the house two hours before you snow blow. Bring Hot coffee with you. ahhhhhhh The North !

As you well know that when you find a good one you don't let him go , price is no object because it's a lot less expensive to pay it once than it is to do it twice. Kirk , cheers from Central Florida. It still blows my mind how different lathing is in our area compared to yours. We used expanded metal lath instead of "chicken wire". Great channel helping people.. My best friend of 40 years was a plasterer.. Regretfully lost him a two years ago.. Your style and hard work remind me of him... I can't ask him but I'll ask you.. I took out a french and replaced it with a slider.. The stucco is about 2" thick.. A very heavy finish coat... I'm going to do the patch myself.. The question is how thick can I lay the mud on the wire.. I have a 6" gap along the 6' top of the slider..Do I spread the mud the whole 2" at one time or is that too thick...I will use luminite... Thanks

Good Morning Mike dude, buy some Rapid set at HD or lowes, you can apply as thick as you like, coat after cost. Morning Arlen, sure, for the waterproof membrane don't use paper but instead a peel and stick membrane or rubber type of membrane. Then attach almost any type of stucco netting or wire you can find, 17, 18, or even 20 gauge will work for setting tiles over a basecoat.😉

Kirk, When you lath a shed or house, does the lath need to be one continuous piece? Example: a simple 10X10 shed. Should it be lath all the way around the shed with with one continuous piece or can you just make sure to just overlap the corners?

Good evening Cornelius. No, the lath/stucco netting can be attached in many pieces. 🤔 In fact, I don't like to turn the stucco netting as this rips the corner paper. Instead, I go just to the corner and use a metal "corner aid" to attach/tie in both sides. This prevents ripping the paper at all vertical corners.😏 Many homes have leaked because the "Lathers" turned the corner with the stucco netting then had to pound the stucco netting flat with lathers hammers or l so that the corners would fit. Hence this action forced the stucco metal netting into the paper membrane, causing penetration leaks for the rainwater to enter these vertical corners. In many homes, the corners eventually failed as moisture found its way into the broken paper on these corners. Would the stucco or structure be stronger if the stucco did indeed go around without tearing/ripping/cutting/embedding itself in at the corners? No doubt about it, sure it would. The choice is for the lather, A tiny bit of extra strength, Or corners that are leakproof? My common sense says that question answers itself. The Better Business Bureau, for example, checks all of us contractors to make sure all of our insurances are up to date to protect you the consumer. Usually, fellas, who are on the ball with the paperwork, as a rule, do excellent work. Good evening Mr. Bigtime, yes you can, that's another way of adding to the wire although it takes as much time as pulling it out. I have had to do this a few times when the holes are over an inch to two inches deep. You said put the "J" mold under the Paper...I would put the "J" mold over the Paper. This will allow the "J" mold to hold the apllied masonry ...Am I right..as apposed to under the paper. Thanks, Love the videos ..

Good afternoon Kris dude, the J trim for stucco is attached first to the plywood substrate. Then the two-ply jumbo text 60-minute paper buts up to it, covering the nail or staple penetrations used to attach it. A caulking bead of Sikaflex 1A, a polyurethane adhesive, and sealant is now used to fuse the paper. The exterior cement plastering J trim together so rainwater can't penetrate the seam. This still allows the J trim to serve as a stucco stop or guild to keep the corner straight and hold the new exterior cement plaster. What I did was run a bead of Sikaflex caulking on the seam, which would still allow the J trim to work as intended but to stop and rainwater from penetrating as it was placed over the paper, don't do that.😏 Always place the J trim under the paper. @@StuccoPlastering Ah Huh! Yes...thinking further into the Matrix of the stucco installation something that does get over looked many times over..to Protect from water penetration that's it! We here in Canada also have freeze thaw moments almost every day during winter months. If the stucco is in the sunny side of the building this where damage happens..many times..Salt on the side walks also creeps up the wall pulling moisture into the masonry, I use flashing over my installations at the base of projects..a discussion for another time. Kirk, have you tried synthetic lath like Spyder Lath? How about rainscreen+lath products like Boral Drain-n-dry lath? drainndrylath.com/ Do you have any issues with synthetic lath? We are fairly close to the ocean so want to avoid rust issues.

Good evening aurthur, Indeed I have tried it. It's a good system.😉 I'll stick with the metal stucco netting. The rain-screens moister barriers are also good but here in California, not code or necessary. I have to stick with sound products with a proven track history of at least 50 years of success before I experiment with clients' homes.
