Hello ladies and gentlemen. While explaining, I’m explaining the ratio of sand to cement for stucco?
We mix stucco in 5-gallon buckets in this mixing stucco video.
How many ways are there to mix stucco or plaster in a bucket? Endless.
Have I ever screwed up mixing stucco in a bucket? No, as it can’t be done? Why? Excellent question.
As if it’s too soupy, I add either sand or cement. If it’s too stiff, I add more water.
If it’s too sandy, I add more stucco.
Ratios for sand and stucco mixing by the book.
How much sand is for each coat of stucco?
Scratch coats are mixed at 1 part cement to 2-1/4 to 4 parts sand, brown coats are mixed at 1 part cement to 3 to 5 parts sand, and finish coats are 1 part cement to 1-1/2 to 3 parts sand.
Most times, we mix 3 parts sand to every one part cement plaster.

how the hell can you dislike this video or any other that Kirk puts up? I am not a stucco guy but I was trying to learn some techniques on slinging mud for showers that I tile. I put a couple of questions in a post and Kirk emailed me that same day with answers to everything I asked, I think you are a very humble and watch every video you put up. Thank you for taking the time to reply to my questions and a special thanks to you and yours for making them in the first place.

You gave me the courage to stucco my backyard cinder block walls. I used a brown colored mortar sold at Lowe's in 90 pound bags and added lime to it. Like the fact that i didn't have paint it and it looks like a tan colored color coat. I saved tons of money and it gives me great pride when friends and family say I did an excellent job. Not only does it look good but it also sealed the cracks were scorpions love to hide ( pest control guy calls cinder block walls, scorpion condos). So thanks a million for your videos and wishing you and your family the best, all the way from Las Vegas ... thanks Kirk! Live long and plaster!

Thank you Kirk. It is very generous for you to freely share this wisdom. I’ve got a concrete foundation getting stuccoed and there is some tar towards the bottom of the grade, do you have any recommendations getting it to stick?
@StuccoPlastering
@StuccoPlastering 2 ай бұрын
To stucco over tar does not last, as the tar will eventually fail as it does not possess the ability to adhere to concrete permanently. Do the best you can to clean the tar then apply a stucco bonding agent over it like Weld-Crete.

Hi Kirk, do you recommend using a primer/sealer over a base coat I’ve done over brick veneer as I can see the brick joint lines quite clearly. I’m texture coating a 1mm sand finish with a coloured acrylic anyways but if I skipped the primer would you see the joint lines as to VS with primer? Or would it make no difference
@StuccoPlastering
@StuccoPlastering 5 жыл бұрын
Howdy and happy Easter Tala, if you can see the grout lines you did not apply the base coat thick enough. no worries. if you apply a finish coat I would advise the finish coat to be heavy sand such as 16/20 sand. Plus I'd splurge 20 bucks for a can of Larson's weld crete bonding agent, paint the bonding agent over the wall before the finish coat, your right it will stop the bleeding through. FYI. if you applied a pprimer your finish coat would not adhere for more than a year. There s a huge difference between primer and a bonding agent. if done right no more lines. Quick question here mr Kirk: what’s the difference between luminate and rapid-set to do patch work? And which one is better?
@StuccoPlastering
@StuccoPlastering 3 жыл бұрын
Good Evening Mc Dowell, excellent question. Luminite is sold by the bag for about 70 bucks. Leave this for us contractors as you will only need a handful.😉 Buy the Rapid Set stucco from HD or Lowes as it has accelerators in it. All you do is add water, don't miss more than 3 to 5 minutes, or like all quick set cement plasters, overmixing weakens the cement plaster. Nothing like a little late night info from the Master Plasterer. I work alone on some smaller projects for myself so I stay consistent with premixed RapidSet products, 5 gallon buckets, a paddle and drill. I mix small batches. It works for me but I am merely a hack in comparison. My point is just that people need to experiment with amounts of water etc.

@StuccoPlastering

Howdy Dude, Common or pure cement is sold in the red bags, it doesn't spread very well but it's mighty strong. The sand is named Olimpia or Felton at the plastering yards. The play sand is not right for mixing stucco for the best strength. If at home depot buy Rapid set, just add water and apply🍻

Hi Kirk, I’m reaching out from Vancouver Island, BC. I find myself immersed in all things Stucco, as I’m unable to find anyone to do my repair work. Sigh. I have a mid 50’s home with Pebble Dash Stucco. The aggregate is not uniform in size, like others I’ve seen, nor is it glass. Fortunately, I have access to this aggregate. Been watching your videos, but so far I’m unable to determine what materials and ratio was used during this time period. I would like to do a test board to try and match the existing uncoloured stucco as best I can. It seems many trades use premixed bags and just add water but it’s unlikely this was relevant in the 50s. Can you direct me to the basic mix from back in the day? I’m a crafty gal but this is all new to me, so details are crucial. 🤦🏽‍♀️

I have 2 brick chimneys 45 ft. that were built in 1852 here in Louisiana. Both were covered at some time in the 1930s with little blobs of something similar to stucco. Now some are starting to pop off of the brick. Anything I can spray over the chimney to help hold these little blobs. 2 1/2 to 3 inch in diameter. Both are open top no covers free standing outside chimneys.

Howdy and happy Easter Herbert,, sorry to say but no, if you find the right stucco guy he should either water blast or scrape to remove all loose areas then replaster them back in to match the existing finish. Then I recommend you primer and paint both of them. If there were shortcut like another layer on top that would bond these areas together I would know it, there isn't unfortunately. Hey Kirk and family. Something I want to share . That mask your girl wears is nearly useless, and I don't see you wear one most of the time that is adequate as well. U need the 99% percent ones at least when you are at the mixing / pre mixing of any material you use. Especially if it has silica sand quartz etc. If it's something with accelerator in it then you need the oily particles type mask as well. A 3m 2097 one filters are dirt cheap and you can get and 3m mask to go with it from aliexpress. The 2097 will save you from all oily and non oily particles on top of helping on some acidic stuff as well (though for that you need the 6xxx series ) . The parts where you have lots of material dust are not good for you . And I would love to be able to watch ginger stucco tips for a long time :). Live long, wear a suitable mask, and plaster...

This advise goes for all trades including carpentry. Do some Googling my brother, make it happen. When I started Hod carrying I learned why they call it hod carrying that as it was sho-nuff hod work. I use the paddle that I say scrapes the sides of the bucket lol. That don’t happen until it’s really sharp so it won’t be that way for a while depending on how u use it. But usually put water in first and which is close to the top of the second metal paddle depending how tall it is. And put 15 shovels to one bag of cement with 3/4 bucket of water and comes out awesome just don’t use wet sand with 3/4 water because it’ll be super soppy lol

Hey Kirk, been watching your stuff for a couple years now. Love your show man. You have repeatedly covered ratios well, but one thing you always kinda glaze over is the proper consistency of the mud mix. Yes, you do show it flipping onto the hawk, or scooped onto a trowel, but this doesnt convey well on video. With all your years of experience, I'm sure it's intuitive to you, but us idiot amateurs need something a little more quantifiable. In concrete, we use a slump test to verify our mixture. Can you show us some sort of measurment or test we could use that is more consistent and repeatable? I think a whole video could be done on just mix consistencies of each of scratch, brown, and color mixes.

Howdy and happy Easter Grey day Dude, seen it happen myself about 15 years ago when Eisenwall first came out. The stucco company mixed it then they took lunch not fully understanding the accelerated set time in the summertime and without adding any of the retardants. They thought it was like portland cement stucco, it hardened, If you understand the cementitious product Eisenwall by rapid set, you will know that it's almost three times the PSI strength as portland cement stucco. That mixer was done for as no amount of chipping would dent that rapid set. Now granted any company that says they have never had either Portland or Rapid Set cement harden on them has not been in the trade long enough, as no amount of reading can teach even an experienced hod carrier or contractor the set times of all types of cement. This we have to learn from years of practice. Peace, love, and harmony to all Sound Plastering tips for the DIY beginner’s and Plastering experts

I'm surprised he's not wearing at least a mask to protect from inhaling the cement dust. Especially when demonstrating for others, should always show the safest practices. Really good info though, very helpful!

Unfortunately in almost all contracting work being exposed is seen as tough and trying to protect yourself is seen as bitchmade. For some reason not wanting to die of lung diseases at 50 is cool.

Good Evening April, unfortunately, I have never worn a mask in my 35 years years of mixing, breaking out, and plastering. Because of Covid. My bad, I do now because of Covid. Why I'm not dead from all the toxins I have inhaled is just plain weird. You folks who watch what we do wear a mask. Kirk’s Tip: to all subscribers or anyone who stumbles on our channel with a question, our gift to you is, type it into our Stucco/Plastering channel, and like magic, a video will appear to explain how it's done. @@TheBUGZNTA Good Evening Bug dude, au contraire mon frere, I wear gloves, so my hands are soft as silk, I wear long sleeve shirts to avid lye burn through transdermal skin entries. For some odd reason, I never thought to wear a mask to save my lungs. The weird part is my lungs are fine, or perhaps they are fooling me to kill me soon. Such is life.🤔 FYI, the thought of being or acting cool has never entered my mind. Things that make you go Hmmmmm...😉 Kirk’s Tip: to all subscribers or anyone who stumbles on our channel with a question, our gift to you is, type it into our Stucco/Plastering channel, and like magic, a video will appear to explain how it's done. @@StuccoPlastering Thats good! I just assumed from my experience where alot of people take unnecessary exposure. Multiple people I work with are the opposite so I just wrongly assumed you were aswell. For instance one of the guys Ive hired refuses to wear a respirator while spraying inside! Stay safe, cant be to cautious.

Howdy Bug, dude, your concerns are indeed extremely accurate. One should always wear a mask or respirator and goggles when doing what I'm doing in this video or mixing cement plaster. Have I always worn a mask and or googles? Unfortunately, I never have in all my years of removing, mixing, and applying. Raw ignorance in the purest form on my part.🤔🤷 One would think I should be dead by the stuff I inhaled. Mix this with growing up to a chemical plant with forty, 8X4 large steel containers of acid. This small warehouse was a mere 15 feet from my bedroom window-the workers, chrome-plated metals, how I used to love that toxic chemical smell. Yes, we grew up in a ghetto/industrial for the first 18 years of my life. Most normal folks locked their car doors while just driving through that area. Moving on from my whiny life's beginning. 😉 These days I wear protective goggles and masks for most things as my son, Jason, gets pissed off and definitely encourages me to wear protective gear. I realize It's goofy after 40 years to start now, but better late than never.😉 What can I say when I was young, I was preoccupied with survival to becoming "edumacated."🥴 Last week, I was working with one of my plasterers, a cage fighter on the side. I said, man, I keep telling you about wearing gloves and that the lye is stucco finds its way into your bloodstream. He just laughed at me. Goofy kid reminds me of myself. The only difference, no one explained the health precautions of importance to my future health as I do to my guys.

Well if you really know anything about plastering you’d see this ain’t how it’s done.... mixing in buckets is crazy.... let all that sand sit in the bottom with common (Portland) powder under a gallon of water will BE STIFF in 5 minutes.... That’s not good technique at all

Good evening, my friend; some folks are building consultants, sort of like a referee, then there is the hand on guys who have an obligation to guarantee their work for decades and are actual players rather than referees.😉 FYI, you and I both know your comment reeks of jealousy.💩 Our unique plastering Tip: all subscribers or anyone who stumbles on our channel with a question, type it into our Stucco/Plastering channel, and like magic, a video will appear to explain how it's done.
