Have been watching your videos almost a year a now. Thank you for your work. I am renovating my house and had to close off some windows and doors. The workers covered with stucco but I can see hair crack all around the perimeter . The house is in desert , very hot and dry. Is this something I should worry about ? Meaning if workers did something wrong will it become worse over the time?

Brilliant video Kirk! And a happy new year also! I'd like to ask you a few further questions too if you don't mind. When you lay on your brown coat and let it take a "set" (I understand that by this point it depends on temperature, substrate, thickness, mix etc) but what do you look out for? Say for example with a typical OPC mix, what makes you think "yes, that's ready for floating now"? When is it ready to float? Are you looking for firmness, pliability, do you press it with your fingers? How do you judge it? I am more familiar with this process when it comes to interior finishes / skimming etc, knowing how long to leave it take a set before trowelling etc, but cement is a little trickier and has different characteristics. Sorry for the long winded question! Any pointers would be great! Thanks
@StuccoPlastering10 жыл бұрын
Evening Llyr Jones, temperature, substrate, thickness, mix, etc,. Llyr you must be a journeyman plasterer to realize all this stuff. I can usually tell when it's ready by color and by touch. If it's warm or hot and the cement plaster starts to turn A Whiter Shade Of Pale, or gray, that's when it's time to hustle or it's beyond control. Happy New year guys! Been watching all your videos almost religiously to familiarize myself with stucco. The house I purchased is coated with eifs and two windows in the front of the house keep leaking. I had found an issue with one window on the Styrofoam trim it had an area where no eifs had been spread. I filled it in with eifs that the builders left but it still continues to leak. I've inspected the roof and inner structure in the attic and see no water leaks. What would you advise on checking or if there are any small fixes I may be able to try. Thank you for all your informative videos they have been an inspiration to try a little diy.
@StuccoPlastering10 жыл бұрын
Morning Ardeleon, thank you, I would say start from the bottom and work your way up with a nozzle attached to the water hose to find exactly where it's leaking, once you have the water spraying where your testing you can set a brick on it for 20 minutes at a time, then work your way up. Once you find the leak, sounds like a quality polyurethane caulking might do the trick with a quality paint. I have torn apart many homes and can find a leak sometimes just by looking without testing, If you wish, send me a picture of the area in question, I will see if I can save you some time. kirk4stucco@gmail.com Cheers,and have a great new year! Another great video. Thanks again.I love watching . For a do it yourselfer which is me I have a question I hope is not too dumb. If I had a 80 lb. bag of Sakrete stucco mix some sand and a bag of Portland cement how much sand and portland would I mix with the 80lb bag of Sakrete stucco to make the best mix. The reason I ask is I have heard this make a good simple mix ?Thanks
@StuccoPlastering10 жыл бұрын
Morning David, excellent question, the Sakrete which is sold at Home Depot is user friendly, you just add water, portland cement plaster as I use most times, you have to add the sand yourself usually 3 parts sand to 1 part Portland. Both of these materials make a good mix. I think most home owners should purchase the cement plasters that just need water as the sand complicates mixing for the average DIY'er. FYI, Lowes sells Quikrete base coat and one coat both have the sand in them you just add water, read instructions as you can't overmix. Home Depot sells a similar product Sakrete, again you just add water. Home depot also sells both the Rapid Set Stucco and Rapid Set Stucco Patch. The difference between these two Rapid Set cement plasters is how much accelerator's they put in these bags, almost all of these fast setting cement plasters (Can Not) be mixed more than 3 to 5 minutes or strength is compromised. Confused?, well these store also carry the same brands for concrete, make sure they say stucco. Cheers and have a Happy New Years, Giordano’s DIY plastering tips

Mr. Giordano when you paint it do you have to use weld crete so the patch doesn't bleed through thank you in advance for your answer
@StuccoPlastering9 жыл бұрын
Hi Gil Velazquez, no, weld-crete is specifically engineered to adhere stucco to painted surfaces or concrete to concrete. What you need after the stucco is patched is a quality Primer and topcoat of paint, preferably from the same company. Any of the quality paints should not bleed through, but the Primer is veyr important with a primer the topcoat of paint won't last long. best wishes, kirk giordano

Kirk and Family, Doing some stucco patch work on my daughters new "handyman special" home. Watch 3 or 4 of your videos and now I feel much more confident to tackle the job. Just one question .. what type caulk to seal next to the window and where the old stucco stopped ? From what I believe you said NOT the latex type but rather the type that is for repairing cracks in cement that IS polyurethane based .. Is that correct ? Again, thanks very much. Ed Blanchard, Phila, PA
@StuccoPlastering9 жыл бұрын
Edward Blanchard Hello Edward, when I repair cracks with a sandy texture I use Mor-Fleexx or a tile grout caulking, If need the added sand to match the existing finish. When I am caulking windows ,doors pipes, etc. to the paper I prefer Sikaflex as this is a professional grade adhesive and sealer that has never let me down. The sika I am referring to is the Polyurethan, yea, it's a drag to work with as you can't clean with water, but the way I use it I don't need to clean as it gets covered in stucco. Best wishes, kirk Giordano

Kirk, Does Spec Mix Type S pre blended mortar work well as a brown coat on a vertical application? Do you ever recommend using a bonding agent when browning a wall over an old scratch coat (walls had a scratch coat sitting for over a year)?
@StuccoPlastering10 жыл бұрын
Morning legalsolutions07, Type S pre blended mortar can be used for stucco or grout, depends on what product you buy. there are 30 different bags and companies that sell both. They will say for stucco and or mortar such as grout for cinder blocks or bricks. A scratch coat can set for years, before you apply the second coat, however make certain that theres no dust, grime, moss or crap like that that has settled in the grooves or the wall or the brown coat won't adhere properly Nothing sticks to duct. Usually a water hose with a lot of pressure can remove most of the dust that settles in the grooves. Cheers, and have a Fantastic New Year! Kirk Giordano’s DIY plastering tips

I love watching your videos both because of the skill you display but also because you give clear and practical explainations of the variables involved. Thank you! Now my question. I have a cabin. It's chimney is cracked somewhat. I called the only mason in this small town. He said the chimney seemed stable and safe and the crack was likely from an earthquake. He said we could stabize the crack with banding and then either stucco over or put on a facing material on the chimney (about 15 feet tall in total -- about 6 above the roof line). This is not structural work. He said he wanted 4500$ for the job which sounds expensive to me but in any case I do not have it. I was thinking of stuccoing the chimney myself an either ending with a color coat or paint. One additional oddity. The brick is not flat but varies in height bt about 1/2 inch. I have done some tile but no stucco. Id such a job doable at all. By an amateur? Thanks!!!!

Love your videos Kirk. A question: I am doing a renovation in India. The standard rendering technique used here is to use a very dry mix (portland + sand), with a consistency almost like soft brown sugar, and then rather than spreading on with a trowel, the mix is flicked on - in the hands of an experienced plasterer most of this sticks and then once the wall is sufficiently covered (depths of an inch or more don't seem to be a problem), floating is done initially with a long straight-edged piece of wood (often alongside a plumb line used to ensure good vertical lines), which is kind of jiggled up and down as it crosses the wall, which scrapes off unwanted excess. This leaves a surprisingly even and flat surface which is then lightly floated with a wet sponge. Corners are done on the fly with the help of a second straight edge. Till coming here I'd never come across this technique, always haveing used/seen a much wetter mix, like the one you use. Do you have any experience of/opinions on this approach?
@StuccoPlastering8 жыл бұрын
Good Evening Nicholas, the application you explain is used here almost always for floors prior to setting tiles, I would not try this technique for walls myself, as the one I have been using forever is very effective. I will say to apply how you mention takes great skill. i have been doing various forms of construction most of my life......... i have 10 acres in the old growth forest........ so i have been working on building everything from elements drawn from the land. i enjoy building the old ways using forgotten techniques. however due to the impracticalness of not having all the essential elements necessary, on my land, I have had to use natural stuff from around my region...... i have been getting lime a natron from central Oregon and sand from the beach and that sort of thing. natural building is far slower then using conventional products. I also joined the brick masons union. unfortunately that has not been as educationally helpful as i had hoped. thanks for the share of all your excellent videos, they are far more time efficient for gaining the knowledge i need for building the things that come to mind...... I am currently building a hybrid Russian rocket stove made from a discarded wood stove clay and tin pipe . i will be posting a video on my channel when i get it all done.

so many mixes.... my head is spinning .... ok here is a question if I mix Structo lite with portland does that make it exterior grade stucco.... and is it a base 1 or 2 or top coat... or all 3 scratch brown and top.... is it necessary too use a bonding agent and will it bond to plywood substrates and protect them from weather ... or never go directly to plywood without a screen.... wow did i get that all out in one sentence.... oh and is an aggragate always necessary
@StuccoPlastering4 жыл бұрын
Howdy Jack Condor, Structo-lite is lime mixed with gypsum, so to add it to portland will weaken the portland and a bad idea for exterior plastering. However, if you applying Structo-lite for the insides of a home or building you can add a handful of portland, this will speed up the set time from 3 to 5 hours to about 20 minutes. You didn't hear this from me.🍺 You cant protect plywood from rainwater with any bonding agents, You would have to apply a real moisture barrier, then attach stucco netting. As a DIY, what products do I use for the base coat, brown coat, and finish coat. Don't want to paint if I don't have to. El Rey stucco is the most common here in Albuquerque. Thank you, your videos are a great service!!
@StuccoPlastering7 жыл бұрын
Good morning Tony Dude, I would suggest for all base coats, you use a portland based cement plaster that can be purchased at your local Lowes or Home Depot. Or you can type in plastering yards and buy what we use as in Hanson's Lehigh premium cement plaster, you won't find this product at your local hardware store, As a rule I mix 1 part cement plaster to 3 parts sand. Finish coats can be any bags that says, stucco finish, or La Habra, Western, BMI, Carsons, and such. Live long and plaster teaching repairing your number 1 investment, your home

I love your videos. You have many, so maybe I missed it, but I have a suggestion. Often, one of the things you do is "read" the previous work on a repair. You are able to say -- and replicate - the work others did. So you say, "this guy.." did such and such with this material and tools. However, you do not give a close up of how one so reads. Maybe that would be worth showing in more detail. Thanks.

Good afternoon Daniel, fair enough, I just looked at 3 jobs today one was a rotten bathroom which I saw only the inside I informed the homeowner that there was a scupper on the exterior wall and that a parapet was more than lily there also, I explained a few more issues by viewing just the wood rot from the inside, i was correct on all issues, I also do this with exteriors, I don't feel this is difficult, in fact I feel it's quite easy after removing enough stucco to build three second story homes. You learn the how's and why's which are necessary to understand how to fix. I'd bet any fella who has been in the stucco trade for as long as I can also do the same thing as it's all simple awareness. Live long and plaster Kirk’s how to plastering video’s

Hi Nick, you'll have to buy the pints. at the neighborhood pubs, as I don't know my way around. I was actually considering moving up toward that area lately, don't want an area to jam packed but more laid back and close to the ocean. Oakland is so packed these days as we now have the biggest ports in the country a mile from my home, so every day all day is rush hour, it sucks. Folks just gotta have stuff they don't need and won't use because the TV says so, BTW we haven't watched TV in over 15 years as for the brainwashing it creates. Cheers kirk giordano
