Stuck in GNU Grub 2.0 Screen? Try this!

If you're on an ASUS device, you might not need to do this. Here's how I fixed it: 1) Repeatedly tap esc while starting up, until you see a screen to select a boot option. 2) Use the arrow keys to navigate to the 'Enter Setup' option and press enter. You should now see the ASUS BIOS/UEFI options and be able to use your mouse and click. 3) Go into advance mode, select boot, and there should be something there that allows you to change the boot options you saw on the screen in step 1. Just disable all the options except the Windows bootloader, maybe delete the ubuntu option, and it should be fixed! (I forgot how exactly I did the last step so sorry I can't hold your hand here).

and if anyone else runs into the issue where it's still there, do the same process as listed but don't delete any boot options, create one and go to the path of where the boot is (efi/microsoft/boot/bootmgfw.efi), name it windows, then create it, go back into boot and disable the boot option named 'ubuntu' (delete it if you want), save & exit, reboot, and you should be back into windows

Oh! I'm afraid you might need a keyboard to do it. Since grub is a recovery mode, it doesn't support a lot of functional outside basic hardware.

i don’t usually comment on youtube videos everything you said is really helpful, made a understand stuff even though i’m not one percent of a computer expert. I started doing all these just so i can see my windows again, later on as i almost gave up, i saw a command from the list saying “exit”. With my last string of hope, i type it and boom i’m in windows, I was never really stuck anywhere. (ps: never panic, i almost had a breakdown, the worst of this year since i recently just got my pc)

If the boot image provided is correct, it should boot up when you type "boot". But if the image path doesn't with, try pressing Esc key.

You just need to open each partition and look for a boot image. If yours is in the gpt2 partition, then provide that path to chainloader and type "boot".

Bro in my grub screen i did what u said check in every partion but I can't find whole efi location there only efi/ in my ls (hd1,msdos5) other than that in every partion i check i can't find I've win 7 before which running completely fine but 2 days ago i wanted to learn linux so i properly followed dual boot Ubuntu installation procedure but the installation at the very end stage give grub install/dev/sd8 failed fatal error then a log generated BTS and only reboot now optiok appeared i did that now since that day i stuck on gnu grub screen i tried exit it showed startimage failed: load error i even check in BIOS for boot options there is several boot options don't know how but none of them is windows bootmanager as its gone i can only use try Ubuntu from Ubuntu bootable usb i check my windows partion drive still contains file and same for other drives now i also get win 7 bootable usb drive i tried to use it its showed windows boot manager black screen with error 0xc0000225 and small error line below then i enter key then windows setup ems enabled option only show then i tap enter it again throw me to that windows boot manager 0xc00000225 screen 😢😢 don't know what to do i first time wanted to go all in with linux and learn it and shell scripting etc but God don't want me to learn anything i after this don't wanna touch linux ever 😢

Since you have a windows bootable USB media, you could try accessing recovery options from there, load command prompt, and run *bootrec /fixmbr* and *bootrec /fixboot*

Oh, does the Windows 7 setup screen doesn't have any "repair this PC" option? I don't recall it. Also, try looking in your PC BIOS to see if there's a boot order selection

Hi, Let me share my experience: My pc-HP 14cr 2000tu (updated to windows 11) I typed "exit" ahead of the grub. Then I got "Reset System". I pressed "Enter" and the screen went blank. It was restarting, immediately I started hitting "esc" and the screen went into BIOS mode. After this I was able to select the OS options, Ubuntu or Windows respectively. I selected Windows and everything was back to normal. Thanks:)

If you have a windows bootable usb drive, you can access that screen through that too.

Try using a windows bootable media and run bootrec /fixmbr command in it. Do your own research through other blog posts online if you don't understand me.

When you're in windows, try the steps in the description to delete grub using diskpart from windows CMD. Maybe they'll help.

I did. I followed your steps and its the same. I restart and id doesnt go directly to W11 but to gnu grub 2.04 screen. I need to fast press F9 on boot to select windows otherwise it goes auto to gnu grub screen. I am going mad:) I lost hours and no progress

To all the lost souls, I finally managed to find solution. After I deleted boot in cmd and after that reinstalled Windows 11 on HP again, gnu grub screen disappeared and Windows was booting automatically. It took me 12h to solve this and deleting boot not just Ubuntu or Debian was my last hope and it worked.

Hm.. maybe the boot image is in another path. You might have an easier time using a windows bootable USB media to access recovery directly. Also, try pressing Esc key to see if it automatically boots into Windows.

In your Linux OS, try running "sudo update-grub" in thr terminal and see if you get that distro's menu on bootup.

If you can boot into windows, you could try these steps to delete ubuntu grub. Go to CMD (Run as Administrator) Type >Diskpart >List Disk >Select Disk 0 (where your dual-boot OS was installed) >List partition (Select Partition that has "system" type) >Select Partition 2 >assign letter=z (You'll now see it as a logical drive Z in file manager) >exit (this will exit diskpart) >z: Z:\>dir (It will list all the directories available) >cd efi (Will enter efi folder) >dir (Will list directories under efi folder) (We now have to delete the Linux grub) >rd (name_of_your_linux_grub) /s Are you sure?(Y/N): Y (This will remove that directory) >exit Just restart your PC. You're good to go!

@@DopeTechFever run diskpart in CMD (Admin), navigate to EFI disk and volume, cd EFI, dir to list the contents of EFI, then delete whatever says something relating to your previously installed distro (i.e. ubuntu) using rmdir. There is a question on AskUbuntu that i followed called "Uninstall GRUB and Use Windows Bootloader" where the top answer is what I did.

Yes, this way of installing windows is often problematic. If there's no additional data on that disk, I recommend a full format and installing windows on an empty volume. You can then make partitions as needed afterwards.

Didn't work. All of them said: filesystem unknown. There wasn't one with windows in them. And all I did was to delete the linux partitions in Disk Management. So Windows should still be there somewhere. But this method didnt show it for me. The BIOS also can not see my Windows boot. I need something that can repair my Windows boot I think.

There are some steps in the description to try and delete grub using command prompt in Windows. Try those and see if it works.
