Brings back memories from when we anchored in the same position: unfortunately we suffered minor damage from the stern anchor when tide turned: very strong current. Such a beautiful area, well worth the effort to enter.

We anchored our Outremer in there, but you need to find a place with swing room as that current is ripping! At 19:19 I think you are on the bottom? Glad it all worked out. One of the greatest spots in the world!

It looked like there wasn’t enough swing room on one position but could / should have reanchored more west of this deeper spot at slack tide

If you risk grounding like that you have to throw stuff into the water to lighten the load - provisions, fridge, cooker, furniture, Marc. If you get really desperate as a last resort you have to drink all the booze.

beautiful video! we were at Thomas Island 3 months ago, a wonderful hidden gem that not many know about. I'm curious.. why did you not have an anchor upstream and one downstream when you were in Hill Intlet? Basically to hold you fore and aft in line with the stream? We use a Fortress as a stern anchor which inevitably needs the dinghy to get out it digs in so well. We have a 35' performance cat (daggerboards and low headroom) which we recently sailed down from Townsville to Sydney so got a bit of practice on this. Philip

I would have preferred to reanchor the primary anchor on the other side of the deeper part and do without our second anchor (Fortress as well). If we would have put the Fortress in at slack tide along the stream it would have been in about 10 m and it would have been even more of a challenge to get it back again

Wow, that was adventurous! But is it a real river or the current is due to lagoon emptying at low tide? The island seems to be too small to support a real river.
@CatGreatcircle
@CatGreatcircle Жыл бұрын
It’s an inlet so tidal currents. It’s more or less open on the other side so maybe it’s not even a real inlet

Wow - it seems a bit of shame to have such a nice cat and not be able to kick the rudders up. We have spent a few weeks (total - max 6 days straight in Hill inlet) and other lagoons, drying out each tide. It is fabulous to be able to have a fast cat that can easily take the sand each tide. I would find it very hard to have the limitations of non kickup rudders when other similar cats to yours - Schionnings G force - can dry out and be very easy to live on in such places. Will you consider kick up rudders on your next boat? I have had them for 23 years and they have no limitations other than an increase in complexity when building but I certainly would never be without them for some of the reasons shown by your video. It seems that you had a slightly troubling experience when a different rudder concept could have allowed you to dry out near the trees each tide or reduce the depth required to just the hulls and be totally worry free. We spent 10 days straight tied to a tree in Percy Lagoon and did some great walking and diving knowing our boat was perfectly safe at all times, same in North Zoe Creek at Hinchinbrook. Viva the kick up rudders. Cheers Phil

@@CatGreatcircle Our cat is a 38ft Chamberlin, a nice 4000kg cedar strip boat I built myself with cassette rudders that are not even in the water when moored. I really like the Outremers and like following your videos. Just felt like it was a slight shame you couldn't enjoy the lagoons like we have over the years when cruising. Every boat has its compromises - but I reckon you could install kickup cassette rudders in your Outremer and then tie to a tree no worries. Cheers Phil

Could Greatcircle withstand being completely beached at low tide without damage? It almost looked like you could have waded out to the boat and not gotten your shorts wet.

Folks, the next time you anchor in a strong current river or canal, be sure to anchor your boat so that it is always parallel with the current, no matter the direction of the wind. The current pulls the boat with much more force than the wind, unless you are in the middle of a storm of course.
@CatGreatcircle
@CatGreatcircle Жыл бұрын
True, the problem here was that we stayed that long that we had currents in both directions. It might have been easier though to reanchor on the other side of the deeper part at slack tide
@JosePedroEspinosa
@JosePedroEspinosa Жыл бұрын
@@CatGreatcircle If the boat is aligned with the current, it doesn't matter if it comes from the bow or the stern, it will still make less pressure than if it comes from the side. An anchor at each end of the boat is enough. I have done it several times in canals in southern Chile, with currents of 6 knots.
@CatGreatcircle
@CatGreatcircle Жыл бұрын
We would prefer doing it with 1 anchor as the fortress digs in so deep that we have major problems getting it out again. In the marquesas the stern line also tried to get behind the rudder as well.
