Spectacular scenery again. I think most boat owners have made the mistake of wrong anchorage that causes delays.

Not the first skipper to dry out a boat unexpectedly no big problem we’ve done similarly unexpectedly in Queensland and the Northern Territory too, it’s easy to get caught out , all a learning curve , can’t be the master without first being the fool. Lots of qualified people who haven’t the esperience are driving commercial boats and they’ll get their experience the hard way one day too , I reckon you’re doing great .

Would a bow and stern anchor have solved your anchoring problems in Hill? I'm hoping to get my own boat up there next year and Hill is on my bucket list..
@sailingpopao3 жыл бұрын
It definitely would have helped our cause, If we ever go back we will probably just commit to drying out intentionally on a nice flat bank out of the main channel.
@davidmacbeth55753 жыл бұрын
@@sailingpopao 👍 Thanks for the tip. Last time I was there was 1983 as the young grunt....too many years ago. Not many boats ventured into Hill way back then but one saving grace is that the charter boats aren't allowed in there... you can just imagine the chaos... or maybe I'd rather not.😱

We went to Whitehaven Beach and went for a walk around the corner into the inlet. Sand Flies were in plague proportion. They were in huge clouds you could visibly see. Had to run away, fast. Nearly drove us crazy. Walking back to the boat I saw a GT surfing in on the small waves chasing bait fish. He'd turn around and do it again about 20 metres up the beach. Why? Why did I not have a rod with me? :)

Last episode I thought you'd run aground while motoring, it was nothing that bad, anchoring in the shallows and partial dry out in a cat is no big deal, inconvenient at worst, I would have just moved the anchor so it would dry out level on the next low tide and stayed put knowing I'd need a 1/2 to full tide to leave. on a monohull it would have been a whole other story. Great video 👍🏼Don't let little things like this get to you, just enjoy life (I know you know how to do that)
@sailingpopao3 жыл бұрын
Cheers Dave, in hindsight it definitely felt a lot worse than it actually was! The next high was good but the wind over tide was brutal, can’t win sometimes haha! All good learning experiences at the end of the day!

Did you get any grief flying your drone at Hill Inlet? We had someone try to call us on the radio (which we didn’t answer) and then played chicken, cutting us off as we were leaving. We gave them a happy wave and they buggered off.
