This week we finally splash Atticus II, but realize pretty quickly that we need to move the boat to another location to avoid some super shallow conditions. While trying to leave our slip, disaster hits and we get stuck in the mud…

As shallow as that Marina is I would think they would get those obstacles out of there so that people don't damage their boats. But what do I know? I'm glad you got to your destination relatively on time and had a great wedding and reception. Thank you for the video. Wishing you safe sailing.

Fortunately all of the struggles and hitting of underwater obstacles was done at super slow speeds and sounds like known wooden objects. Not impossible but the chance for any real damage are pretty low. I thought you were all set once she floated clear of the crane. Weird the marina gave you that slip as they should have known you have a pretty deep draft on Atticus 2. Congrats on splashing and a great wedding festivity.

Hey guys, I just want to thank you for all the videos you put out for us all to watch! I don't know if you remember me but I told you guys I got a sailboat, and the work to fix it up has been intense and overwhelming at times but you taught me to stick with it because of the fun that comes after all the work is done. You taught me how much work it can be and what to expect and not to give up. That info you share has helped me see the work as "normal" and part of owning a sailboat. Fair winds 👍

Hey guys… hang a pair of really big bumpers off the aft rail to keep the dingy from chaff. Also figure out how to avoid chaff when you tie diagonal lateral lines to stop swing over the tubes. Otherwise you’ll chaff the tubes as well. Just a friendly reminder… that’s a nice new dinghy and chaff happens quickly. Be well… Matthew SV wildflower Seattle

The cheap ass owner of the marina should have dredged that out seasons ago, especially if they knew about the problem. A basic job of a marina owner is to allow boats to have easy access in and out of the slips. 🤔 Love your videos keep em going !

Fantastic to see you in the water. But what is the marina doing?? Why have they not moved those pylons to stop a major boat disaster?? Have you managed to check for damage on your keel? It always happens just after a major new clean paint job on your beautiful bottom! You have done some amazing work on Atticus.

The marinas in this part of North Carolina have been devastated by hurricanes in recent years. Submerged objects buried in the pluff mud is not something most marinas can afford to fix. It looks like the wind drove the water out of that area on day of their launch. It probably would not have been a problem on a normal day.

Not a boater at this moment, however, I would expect the marine management would match customer boat types and depth of boat bottom to appropriate slips. Perhaps dredge the dock areas? I’d be a bit perturbed with what you went through … 🤨🤭🥴🤓

then you may not make it in and out of many marinas. the costs of what you are assuming should be done, is why it is not. 6.5' of keel is bigger than most marinas can afford to maintain at their shallowest slips/haulouts.

Keep in mind it isn't uncommon for entire marinas to be nothing but mud on a super low tide following a heavy northern front that blows the water out of the bay.

Re-splashing your boat after a long while on the hard is like the running back blasting through the gap stiff-arming everyone until they break into the open and... unfurl the sails! Makes one wonder just how the boatyard could know of broken off pilings in the runway and not drag them out! When you get back from Raleigh, you need to haul the boat out again and repaint the bottom of the keel! But of course, you know that. We'll always know there is a scuff on the bottom of that keel until you fix it! 😄 If you are going to go down the ICW, hold off on that until you get past Maransas Pass around St. Augustine.

Great episode, great to see you floating again. You have still something on your to do list. Once you are in warmer and clearer water you might want to see how that dragging affected the underwater part An outcome as " we couldn't find any signs" or "good we looked one of the anti corrosion blocks is missing" are as welcome. One because no extra work is needed the other because more damage can be averted. But anyway it will make another great episode.

PHEW! What a stressball! Glad you got around those blockages, and hopefully they address what is sunken right there in their Marina, they need to drag that stuff up and maybe dredge that area better. Sounds tight. Ours is basically a 6foot draft as well, so we feel for ya and know what it's like= our own mooring ball is only a few yards away from an area to run aground on, and we had a close call once when we went too wide in bad weather trying to grab our ball on a return trip. (50mph gusts and bad currents all working against us), it sure is a trial by fire sometimes. hehehe

The max prop anode won’t last very long as is. One tip to help it last longer is to paint around where you put the bolts through the anode with spray on Trilux anti foul. That part of the anode won’t then dissolve as quickly . It is very thin in this part and the bolts rapidly become free otherwise. The other option is to buy the bronze adapter plate they sell which means you can attach the anode with a long bolt through the centre. Ours lasted October to August through the Caribbean and Pacific to Australia with this.

Lightning protection is tricky business, one part science, two parts magic! Did someone tell you the plate needed to be replaced? Looked like surface corrosion that could been cleaned off easily with a brush. Replacement was a lot of work, maybe just playing it safe due to all the expensive electronics? Just curious, great job, as always.

I know that area pretty good. My boat was stuck for like 3 to 4 days. That boat draw only 5ft and my keel sunk inside that mud about a foot. That area is the weirdest thing. If a strong breeze comes in, that area acts as a funnel and takes the water out not the tide.

That was frustrating. The other option that would have helped was instead of "Kedging" the boat (heeling it to reduce draft) is to "Lighten Ship". Remove as much weight as possible, water, dingy/motor. tools, anchors, etc.. to let the boat ride higher in the water. A big pain in the ass to offload a bunch of stuff but it may come in handy in the future. Hope this is the last of the hurdles you have to deal with before you head South. Hopefully you didn't scrape all that fresh bottom paint off the bottom of your keel.. : ) What is your draft? That will have an impact on where you can go in the Caribbean. Thanks for the Video! Sail On!

When they first got to the area and I met them, I asked how long they were staying. I said to them that they should leave before March, due to the strong westerly winds in the spring that can push the water out of the Pamlico sound, and lower the water level. In fact, my Facebook memory from yesterday was a picture from a few years ago with sailboats laying on the mud here.
