Anyone with student loans or a mortgage should check out Givling. It's an app that is crowdfunding student loan debt with trivia! Each member can get up to $50,000 of their loan paid off tax free or put in an investment account. (In addition to weekly trivia prizes and 10k random drawings.) They’ve payed off 4.1 million as of today. If you join use invite code SH196048 for a free play and help another stressed out borrower stick it to Navient !

@@naughtieindia I said this show has the coolest looking stage (implying it's cooler than the stages of other shows), not saying it's '"the coolest" thing on the show.' Hasan has mannerisms as though he's emulating hip hop artists, but that doesn't look cool to me, it just looks try-hard. I wonder how much time he spent practicing those hand gestures :)< He occasionally says funny and insightful things, but comes across as biased or ignorant when his writers don't do enough research or omit important information. I find the intro music to be the coolest thing on the show. What do you think is "the coolest" thing on the show and why did my comment inspire you to respond?

Thank you, Hasan, for making this depressing and frustrating topic informative and easy to understand. IMO, the US is fu$%ed. For example, I am sadly grateful my grandmother died so I could pay off my student loans. It's f-ed on so many levels. First, it means I'm privileged enough to come from a family whose grandparent had money left to give to their grandkid after they died. Second, she died due to a hospital being understaffed and unable to provide her care. They overmedicated her instead, which lead to her death, which allowed me to pay off my student loans. And on the topic of healthcare in the US being f-ed, I was hospitalized and told it would be paid for because I worked at said hospital. Three days and 30k later, I was discharged. Unable to pay off the 30k, I filed for bankruptcy (also privileged to at least have the funds to file for bankruptcy). BTW, bankruptcy does not relieve you of student loan debt. No, that stays with you and your family indefinitely. That is unless a family member passes and you can use your inheritance to pay it off. Do you see the layers of fu$%edupness that exists in the US? How are we the land of the free?

@jamesburgess2k
@jamesburgess2k 5 жыл бұрын
@@zhm96 the NCAA is over all college sports in America. They, the organization, make actual billions, but they have rules that forbid any college athlete from making any type of money. Basically they are millions upon millions and players only get a free scholarship, which can be taken away if they get injured or caught receiving any amount of money or favors (like a free meal) no matter how small, which is why people sometimes likened it to slavery. It's alot more terrible stuff they do, but that's just the basics on why most people think they're evil. John Oliver did a video on it if you're interested in learning more.

@@renepauls7293 thing is there are a lot of jobs that need a college education to do well but do not pay well. even in the field of law, jobs like public defender do not pay well which is why the people who are public defenders are absolutely swamped with cases. this is because people who took loans to get through law school want a well paying job to pay off those loans, and public defender aint it. and public defenders are necessary because a large number of people cannot afford a lawyer. outside of law, there are jobs like social worker, for which one really ought to have a degree in child psychology before doing. people who work in mental institutions and many other jobs. there are many purposes for making college free. one is so poor people can go to college with no debt and get a job that pays well enough for them to be out of poverty, and most of those jobs require a college degree. but the other purpose is for more people to go to jobs that don't necessarily pay well but require a college degree like the ones i listed above.

Exactly. Capitalism is supposed to be about the freedom to choose the companies that offer the best service, and letting the other companies fail and get out of the market. In this case, capitalism is only 1-way: companies are free to do whatever they want, but students can't even choose which ones to get services from. Even fans of capitalism should be against this.

@nicolebrown6424
@nicolebrown6424 5 жыл бұрын
@@undrtakr900 no I'm not defending the bank. It's just a funny analogy...acting like holding up a bank is different than taking a loan from a bank and repaying it. I get that ballooning interest is crippling, not defending that. But if you say you'll pay back $40,000 to the bank and they give you the money and then you don't pay it back...you've stolen the money, no?
@spakentruth
@spakentruth 5 жыл бұрын
@@nicolebrown6424 see tho it's in the banks interest to get them to make you owe money by selling the idea you HAVE to borrow money to get a foothold to getting the necessary nicer things including something so necessary as an education. On top of that all that , imagine your loan and everyone else's loans being collateralized into bigger lumps of money getting reinvested or re loaned to businesses or equity firms on the market. So really the consumer is paying back a loan that's been loaned several other times because....that money doesn't exist. That number you're seeing in your bank is just a placeholder for a placeholder for a placehder which is why banks make most of their money through interest, commission and financial insurance so when the bank can't hand out anymore loans or people default the insurance companies can return 20x the original defaulted amount but those people are still in default and owe money. The point is the system essentially depends on many people to fail to make their payments to keep paying interest even if they can't really afford it. all of those things existence rely on people constantly having to indebt themselves to pay the banks fees and interest to pay back a loan that pays back another loan until that money just ends up in deeper pockets investing anyways. so who's really getting held up?? That's why banks are some of THE shadiest organizations on the planet no matter where you go you can be sure a bank is going to be shady with their dealings and exploiting any and all loopholes to the max even if it costs people and makes other people money

But if you want to be a doctor today, I read somewhere that GPs and OB/GYNs will be in very short supply because of how much it costs, how much is insurance, and how much lawyers encourage lawsuits. Any of this true? You decide. Can you afford a doctor who graduated Harvard Medical, or U of Toledo? Are either one of those graduates worth the hundreds of thousands of dollars? Who's more stressed-the Harvard or Toledo having to pay back loans?

England has SFE (Student Finance England). We can borrow for our tuition fees (£9250 a year for most courses) AND we can borrow for maintenance (i.e for rent and living costs). We don’t have to pay anything until we earn over £24,996 a year after graduation. Even then, we only pay 9% of the amount over that threshold of 25K. The interest rate is 6.3% while we study. And when we pay it back, the money comes straight out of our pay cheques. Fun fact - if our pay changes to below the threshold of 25K, we can ask for a refund. One of the biggest things is that there is only one company that deals with student loans. OH AND IT GETS WRITTEN OFF AFTER 30 YEARS.

I think what a lot of people don't realize or just forget is that high school kids are conditioned by school counselors, movies, teachers, and their parents who were also conditioned that going to college is their only respectable path to success. It's inaccurate as there are many paths to success, but please keep in mind that this is what is pushed on them at a young age when you ask "why didn't they just not get the loans if they couldn't afford them?" They're kids who were promised it would work out and were pressured by society.

@Keith Panton why does every leftwing idea always want me to stop believing in reality and use my imagination so their ideas can make sense. In case you are have not been paying attention, the federal government are amongst the most incompetent people in the world. Case and point: US nuclear missiles are still run on computers that use floppy disk. Also the US has the 4th highest wages in the world as of 2017. When you look at minimum wage workers in the US you will find that the majority do not have a high school diploma. The US healthcare system is responsible for 40% of new medical discoveries. Perhaps you should stop thinking only about yourself, come out of your dream world and pay attention to the real world. You just might learn something.

@@dewaldt8104 - you are a hilarious part of what is wrong with your country. Speaking of using your imagination.... Aside from the fact that I'm not sure I believe your statistics, (what's that quote, 95% of all statistics are pulled right out of your ass?) if you are looking at _average_ wage, then I don't doubt that the number is high - after all, america has a shit load of billionaires (who, ironically, *don't* pay taxes). However there are places where the minimum wage is 7.50 per hour. Now being able to live off of *that* takes quite the imagination - and maybe a time machine. And again, not sure I believe your statistic about healthcare discoveries, but I also don't think it matters. People in your country are *dying* from *fully preventable medical conditions*. As someone with Type 1 diabetes, I'd never even _consider_ living in america. And all I need is insulin - I can't imagine breaking a leg or, hell, getting cancer while living in america... Jesus Christ. Medicine is supposed to help people, not make pharmaceutical companies rich. Yet given your country's current state, that's not remotely the case. Oh and speaking of statistics, if I were you I'd look up how america ranks when it comes to general health, or happiness, or debt, or.... well, any measure of positive societal growth. Because it does not do well in those categories at all. Though I do believe you are number one in prison population, so... there's that I suppose. Perhaps you should start thinking more about others - maybe then you could actually do some good in the world. (Oh and you can take your dog-whistling elsewhere - I'm not a "leftist". I just don't live under a rock with my own head stuck up my ass.)

Half of it I did not have to pay back and the other half I had to pay back in small bits in 20 months...but if I could pay back a certain amount upfront the amount I had to pay back decreased by additional 30%. Having a student debt like you have in the USA would make me not only inactive but planning to overthrow the USA...because it is clear that young peoples' inexperience and lack of knowledge about finances and financial sandpits (not taught in school) is getting exploited. I would not pay back even one cent in the USA.

Had one more year of payment... Had a change in living situation.... Asked my loan people to lower my monthly payment, even if it increased how much time I had to pay back + interest. I didn't care, I'd been on time for 9 years. I'd gladly extend my payment window, as long as I was in good standing. They said no. Do what you have to do. My credit sank 250pts. Can't get a loan to replace my car, defaulted on credit card, and had to close my bank account to open a free one. And now, moving back home with the aunts because I can no longer afford to live on my own. Thanks, America!
@radoraf
@radoraf 5 жыл бұрын
Yep that is definitely a problem. I saw it when I read the fine prints of the student loans I took. I always made sure to not borrow more than I could afford to repay quickly enough. It's really the compound interest that makes the loan that harder to repay. You lower that, you have to pay exponentially less over time.

@@radoraf Yeah I was only going to community college, with plans to go to Temple University and transfer to Japan. This was just for my community college and was only 35K. I have my flimsy little degree and other programmes helped with training certifications. Now, my Acct/Busn Mgmt are pretty worthless, my Forensic Micro-Bio certs are a little useful, but without some sort of masters or PhD, most of the jobs I have access to simply won't hire me, though I've got enough school time and hands-on. It's also been 12 years. My school dropped their inquiry, but it hasn't changed anything for me. One less "negative hit" on my credit report. My car people? Exactly the same. Had my car for 4 years, 2 months; two deferrals. Change in living situations lead me to a position where I was temporarily staying with a friend, and working overnight. Problem was that my parking situation meant that I got 6 parking tix over 2 months, car was towed the following year, lost my car because my lien-holders covered my tix but then demanded I paid them 2K up front to get my car back. Mind you, when I got my car it was going cost 10K, worth only 7K, but after 4 years I'd paid 22K because of interest. My credit report says I still owe 12K. Does that make any sense??? I lost my car, lost my job because public transportation doesn't take me out there during the times I was scheduled to work (overnight) and that meant I missed credit card payments. Which meant I defaulted on my cc. Which took another 50 points after I worked out a deal with the bank. They closed my accounts with no further delinquencies but that meant no more banking with THEM. So I went from having NO credit to having a 750 and dropping down to 420 in the span of 5 years. It's been about 2 or 3 years now, but I'm just barely getting up to 500 because I'm not eligible to get ANYthing that would actually help BUILD my credit back up.That and lack of jobs related to my degrees and certifications. Basement-dweller I will be for some time.

@BTrain-is8ch

It's not a crisis. Something like 70-80% of borrowers have debt balances under 40k and despite the fact that TV shows love to trot out people with six figure balances for these stories as if they're representative of something the reality is that they only make up less than 5% of the borrower population. Student loan inconvenience would be a more appropriate label for the situation and I write that as someone that spent 12 years paying mine off.

Our business are booming not just cooperation, we have relatively good freedom. I admitted that we had a good 20 years of deep corruptions, our country still limit the media quite a bit and it is very hard to do any creative type job. But still we good market regulation, news outlet that aren't exist for the pure purpose of fueling passionate hate toward other groups of people. And I think any type of system have its false, and some country use that system better. For example country like Denmark is the peek of socialist where every individuals are happy to contribute for the development of the whole while still have a lot of freedom, Japan in my opinion is the best of capitalism where companies work tirelessly to bring the customers the best products with the best service at the best price possible. While I have a lot of out-sider hate for America your ego, racism, cooperation shady practices I still think that America is a beautiful country, fill with compassionate, passionate peoples. I still remember the first time I watched American marched for the Viet Nam war to end that was just heart-warming.
