The Little Mermaid was first written by Hans Christian Andersen in 1837. Since then many adaptations of the story came out. The Disney animation was in 1989, and now we have a new live action Little Mermaid coming out next year. Ponyo was released in 2008, so it was after the Disney movie and way after the book. However Ponyo should not be looked at as just another adaptation of the Hans Christian Andersen story because there are very significant differences. Ponyo stands on its own, and is only very loosing referencing the original story.
