30X40 Design Workshop do you know what type of architect designs the floor plans and or that’s what all architects do?
@cwilkinson995 жыл бұрын
Nice review, Rick is an inspiration to me as well for his clarity of forms, plan and materials. I went to school with Rick Joy at the University of Arizona, but didn't know him. But I recall one or two of his presentations and he always had beautiful drawings. He's a super talent now and then, and was recognized at the time as being very good. He's an important part of the architectural community at the U. of A., Tucson and Arizona. One of the professors at the time while we were both there was Judith Chaffee. She's been an inspiration for many of us, including Rick Joy as I understand. Her work is well worth reviewing carefully for her modernist application of form in a regional setting in Arizona.

Don't stop chasing that dream, kid. Architecture is one of the very few good things that we have left. When it's done right, people's lives are made better.

Awesome, man! I'm 24, did the maritime academy for 5 years, and discovered this channel in the process. I am absolutely captured by the idea of architecture. Dont fall in the trap that who you are is defined in one line. Im thinking about starting an architecture side project for myself, eventhough I studied something completely different. Do what captivates and motivates you! Good luck with following your dream!

Great, well executed architecture isn't a collage, a laundry list of architectural elements, but a design concept, theme, that's been explored for each individual project's function and location environment. Neither is good architecture an "ism" being played over and over like a broken record, but a never ending exploration into the imagination to create an experience; not just shelter. This is why the works of creative architects looks like poetry rather than a grab bag of elements removed from their original context. But I'd have to say the biggest difference between a "functional" architect and a "poetic" architect is whether the design is "alive", or "dead"; that is whether it has a sence of movement, a sence of being on the verge of completion, as expressed in the phylosiphy of Tao. So it's nice to see such things as in the book you shared because in the real world those qualities are quite rare. Thanks.

I had the great fortune of seeing Rick Joy speak at my university in 2013. I actually ran sound and set the event up for him. I was unable to go to diner with him afterward, students were encouraged to go, but he was a really interesting guy. He spoke a lot about Amangiri and Kanye West. He talked about the more human side of architecture and how light and fire can inspire. I wish I hadn't been working the event because I wasn't able to take it in as much as if I were just a student.

Hi im a high school student that wants to be an architecture. I have a question about how i should approach what i want to do, because i am currently determining what school to go to for an undergrad but one is architectural studies and the other is architecture.
@30by406 жыл бұрын
depends on the end goal...if it's to be an architect, you want 'architecture'...that's a professional program + degree and you'll need a degree from an accredited university to ultimately become professionally licensed. architectural studies sounds to me like an unaccredited program and - at least from where I sit - would seem to be of questionable value. there are many paths to get where you want to go, but start with a basic understanding of what you're striving for... hope that helps...

Isn't conveying an architect's design process difficult in a book format? It seems only visual medium can do justice for eg, the glimpses of Frank Gehry's design process we got from the documentary 'sketches of frank Gehry'. This is why i love your channel, you share your ideas, thoughts, design process which a book could never replicate. :) Cheers my friend, happy new year!
@30by406 жыл бұрын
appreciate you noticing and your thoughtful comment...100% agree...the Interludes series has some great stuff on Rick's work including him walking through some of his projects...would love to experience his work...
@kedarkalambe87686 жыл бұрын
True, nothing like experiencing a building first hand. Maybe this is the greatest gift i received from architecture education of learning how to experience a building with all senses, the visual memory created by walking through a building, all this opens a different dimension in your mind than the usual chatterbox mode. :) Looking back, i feel the architecture education should start with teaching students how to really experience a building. Its odd we had to self learn this process. Greatly appreciate woody allen movies or inception for instilling this vision & of course zumthor works. If possible please make a video on this topic. Also thanks for sharing the interlude series, saw the trailer, looks really interesting.

The Brady Bunch Movie made fun of Mr. Brady by showing designs of all sorts of buildings he did for different clients, in different places, and serving different purposes, but all of them were exact copies of the Brady house. A designer should be laughed at if he does the same thing for every project, because it is clearly inappropriate to use one pattern for projects that have vastly different uses, and are sited in vastly different environments. On the other hand, it is an egotistical pursuit to extravagantly spend the clients money on designs that are unnecessary attempts at reinventing the wheel. That is actually one reason I like your work, you are not afraid to use the ancient gable roof form in most of your designs. It is well suited for the climate that your buildings live in. Wright had his Usonian series, in which he reused the same details for most of them. He restricted his wild inventiveness to the unique decorative cut outs he created for each home. Architecture magazines today are filled with buildings that I don't like because they are barely recognizable as buildings. The designers are dead set on making a name for themselves and somehow find clients with budgets large enough to let them go crazy. A financial collapse will be required to bring architecture back to sanity.
