If you want a little more context for this theme I would recommend you to watch: Story Teaser: The "Divine" Will It also has a cool ost in the background and it tells you a bit of Scaramouche's backstory. You will understand why he mentions 3 betrayals and becoming a god, and why he had part of Raiden Shogun's theme in his own theme.

Music nerd more is arguably the best nerd mode. I didn't notice that the music was in ternary form... that's so cool!! From Genshin, you can always react to "The Divine Damsel of Devastation". It's one of the most beautiful music pieces in game. Of different games, well... "Ori and the Blind Forest" has some beautiful songs and I will never not recommend the OST from every and single Zelda game ever released (if you're not familiar with them already).

Technically he is the prototype of Shogun. the true Raiden Ei create them both, one to contain the gnosis of her godhood, and the other to serve as her body double, but she decide he is too emotional to serve as the contain of the gnosis... and that indirectly planted a seed that his emotion is his weakness and he seek to be less human as well as his desired to carry the gnosis. not knowing Ei really didn't see him as a failure, she just doesn't want to burden him with it. so he is technically the shogun elder brother... xD

i just love how you took the time to read the latin lyrics, because they give so much depth to scaramouche as a character. scaramouche was a puppet created by the raiden shogun after a terrible event, and once she witnessed him cry, deemed him as being too emotional for the task she created him for and casted him aside. scaramouche deemed it as a betrayal, marking two others in his life before he becomes what you see him in this video. a puppet becoming a god through artificial means, fueled by spite and anger at the world and those who wronged him in his eyes.

He is in fact not a human but a puppet created by a god. Scaramouche, also known as Kunikuzushi "Country Destroyer") or by his Fatui codename "Balladeer." Scaramouche was created as a concept to test Raiden Ei's plans for an indestructible Gnosis-bearing puppet. With his creation accomplished, Ei decided to leave him in a slumbering state, free from her control, as he had cried upon his creation. After awakening, Scaramouche came to believe that she had deemed him a failure and abandoned him. Following two other "betrayals," he started to hate both gods and humanity, taking on the name "Kunikuzushi" while wandering Inazuma and joining the Fatui as The Sixth Fatui Harbinger, The Balladeer. This fight takes place after he cut contact with the Fatui and tried to become a god using Ei's Gnosis and the help of the Akademiya.

Let's be honest, Genshin's music is at a tier where it practically doesn't matter what it's attached to anymore, it's carrying the whole franchise almost completely regardless the quality of the rest of it. It's even more obvious when you see the comments on more "math"y channels (meta builds, banner reviews, etcetc), with an abundance of probably autistic (speaking as an autist) people who are literally incapable of comprehending art, much less art that they don't already agree with. Genshin is a prime example of a passion project on the dev side, and a cynical money-maker machine on the business side.

the part where yu peng chen imbued asian section and stuff is because the in game regional location (the game map is huge), back when you were listening to Azdaha the asian part was because he is from Liyue region which is based on China so the music there in that region is mostly uses a Traditional Chinese instrument and for this Scaramouche was born in Inazuma region which is based on Japan hence why there is a Japanese instrument. If you listen to instead regular battle music from each region in Genshin Impact for example Duel in the Mist or Gilded Runner there will be mainly traditional instrument used. speaking of battle music, would you like to do a reaction on Gilded Runner? I would love to see ur confused reaction on figuring out the rhythm in Gilded Runner.

evidently, the latin lyrics for phase 2 released by Mihoyo are as such: Vosmet vetat res coelica (“The heavenly thing rejects you [pl.].”) Iam premet letum vastum te (“Now empty/immense death/annihilation will oppress/overwhelm you.”) Vae gnari sunt suimet quis in oculis (“Woe be the eyes of the one who is enlightened.”) 五夜のすゑなぞながされ (“Why did you throw me away at the end of the fifth night?”) - [Goya no sue nazo nagasa re] Sapientes feroces vetitum per currunt nefas (“Unchecked knowings/teachings run through a wicked offense forbidden,”) (Lower voice) Sapientes pelliciuntur in nefas (“Wisdoms coaxed into a wrong,”) tarda leti et necessitas semota corripiet gradum (“obstacles of annihilation and a compulsion removed will hasten the step.”) (Lower voice) tarda leti mors necessetudinis corripiet gradum (“obstacles of annihilation, a death of necessity will hasten the step.”) Iugis solum ipsius nihil debet (“He owes nothing alone to his own shackles.”) Credas in nullum qua sunt edicta inutile (“You should believe in nothing that are useless edicts.”) (Lv.) Cave vide qua sunt edicta inutile (“Beware, see what are useless edicts.”) Dominatus, Dominatus, Dominatus* (“Tyranny, Tyranny, Tyranny”) 五夜のすゑなぞながされ (“Why did you throw me away at the end of the fifth night?”) - [Goya no sue nazo nagasa re] Vae eis simulacrum in solio inanis fixere sapientes (“Woe to them, the wisdoms fixed [his] phantom onto an empty throne,”) (Lv.) Vae eis cui simulacrum conlaudent mirent augeant (“Woe to them, the likeness to whom they would praise, would be amazed by, would augment,”) necessitas semota corripiet gradum (“a necessity removed will hasten the step.”) (Lv.) et necessitudinis corripiet gradum (“and of a necessity will hasten the step.”) Numquam genitus desiderem (“I would never desire to have been born”) And the Idiomatic translation is: The heavenly principle rejects you all. Now immense annihilation will overwhelm you. Woe be the eyes of the one who is enlightened. Why did you throw me away at the end of the fifth night? Knowledge runs wild through a forbidden offense, (Lv.) Wisdom coaxed into a wicked thing, obstacles of annihilation and a compulsion removed will hasten the step. (Lv.) obstacles of annihilation, a death of necessity will hasten the step. He owes nothing to the loneliness of his own eternity. You should believe in no things that are useless proclamations. (Lv.) Beware; see what are useless edicts. Absolute power, Absolute power, Absolute power! Why did you throw me away at the end of the fifth night? Woe to them, the wisdoms [that] chained the phantom to an empty throne, (Lv.) Woe to them; to whom the likeness they would praise, would be awed by, would augment, a necessity removed will hasten the step. (Lv.) and of a necessity [that] will hasten the step. I would never wish to have been born.

I've seen another translation that differs in some major part, in particular the "oculis" is probably "Vision" rather than "eyes," "simulacrum" is probably "effigy" rather than "phantom" (referring to Scara being a puppet) and that the last line is almost certainly supposed to be "I wish I'd never been born (at all)," for that last Bohemian Rhapsody reference.

@freedragoons

Scaramouche was originally from Inazuma, a prototype puppet created by the Raiden Shogun to become a vessel for a god. His story from there is actually quite dark, and the theme shows it well, from the lyrics to the instrumental. If you want to know his story, just listen to Bohemian Rhapsody... that's not a joke. The composers and story writers reference it A LOT in his story, even down to the fact that Raiden's God name is Beelzebul, and Rhapsody speaks about Beelzebub. I personally love the Japanese trap sections, since they move from the first being very melancholic and sad to the second being super upbeat with faster instrumentals. Such a good piece.

Hoyo-mix consists of a lot of music producers, one of them being yu peng chen. Some work for overworld music, some work for character teasers and demos. Yu peng chen work specifically on boss music and some of the special character demos. But yeah most of the boss music is written by only himself. You should check beta versions of these themes, they even include some random vocals that himself sang.

The official lyrics get released alongside the official OST release, which hasn't happened yet, and all the lyrics that exist right now are written down by the fans by ear, so there might be some mistakes.)

The asia inspired segments and Japanese lyrics are there not just because the composer likes to mix them in, but also because of the lore reasons. Music in Genshin often reuses previously established leitmotives to reinforce the lore connections.

"It's like this instrument is asking a question, and this one is replying" "They take away the orchestra to signify the loss of his humanity" I love listening to musicians' perspectives on these genshin songs. That first observation about the question had me intrigued from the get-go, and I have never had that particular perspective of instruments used as an analogy for a conversation. I don't know how to explain it, I just really really liked that for some reason. I loved your analysis and I feel that you paid attention to everything, even the lyrics, which was a real treat. As someone else mentioned, Scaramouche is related to the Raiden Shogun, the ruler of "Japan" in Genshin so it makes sense that his theme would have some reference to it and, more specifically, her. The leitmotif used during that section appears in other pieces like "A Hollowed Skull" and "Soul of Soulless Conditions" which are tracks that play in the area where he lived in at one point in the past. Gotta say that Raiden's actual leitmotif doesn't appear in this track at all, in spite of what some commenters mentioned. There's a place where it's conspicuously absent however, and it's for a reason. The story of Scaramouche here is being told on like 3 different levels at the same time, through the music itself, the lyrics and the languages used to sing them. Latin is generally used by the Fatui (Latin for "fools"), the "bad guys" in the game and Signora (you listened to her theme a while ago), who is also a Fatui, has her entire theme sung in Latin because she's fully on their side. Scara on the other hand has been "betrayed" too many times so he doesn't really trust the Fatui and they don't really trust him. So he sings in Latin for the most part, more specifically the parts where he is speaking about destruction, revenge, becoming as gods all that cool stuff, and those parts tend to become more and more corrupted as the song goes on as he continues his transformation. And then he drops to singing in an old form of Japanese, his voice clears up of most of the distortions and he's talking about his past, his regrets and his pain to show that there's still some kernel of his old self in there before it drops back into the ominous Latin. So at once we're told his general backstory as we're told about his allegiances and his actual true feelings, things that the character would never admit to themselves, not just through what but also how he's singing. The story contained in the music is probably pretty obvious especially for someone who is trained in musical theory, but what isn't immediately evident is how Scaramouche's Japanese side of the theme, during the second phase, is complementary to Raiden Shogun's leitmotif, his creator and in his own words, mother. She abandoned him when he developed a consciousness and it played a huge part in the path he took since his first memories are of his mother going to get milk and never returning. Fittingly her motif is completely missing and it isn't just not there, it actually feels like it really should be there. There's a Raiden Shogun-shaped hole in the song. So more than just being a thematic allusion to him being from fantasy Japan, it speaks about what Scaramouche yearns for: kid wants his mommy. But she's been out to get milk for the past 500 years and her absence, like the absence of her motif from the song, says a lot about the character, his motivations and his real feelings. Aside from the technical stuff, that's the part that impressed me the most. Sorry for all the story details, they're not likely to make a lot of sense if you haven't played the game but I felt a bit of detail would perhaps help put some stuff in perspective. So my point: it's not that the composer just likes inserting Japanese or Chinese instruments and influences, these are actually story-related themes. It's just that the biggest and best boss tracks up to this point come from fantasy China and fantasy Japan. You should see what they (since it's the entirety of Hoyomix that should be getting credited) did with fantasy India and Middle East in the battle themes and music from Sumeru. Some favorite examples are "Hustle and Bustle of Ormos"/"End of the Feast," "Jolts in the Forest," "Swirls of the Stream"/"Swirls of Shamshir," "Gilded Runner" or, if you want something unrelated to either of the fantasy countries I mentioned, "Die Mittersommernacht-Fantasie" from fantasy fantasy Germany (it's the fantasy version of the fantasy version of Germany, it makes sense in context) or "Combat Beneath the Waves" and "Undersea Encounters" from -fantasy- -Atlantis- a civilization sunken beneath the sea that has some references to ancient Greece and that Plato never wrote about, ever, nuh-uh.

Tiny little detail i noticed: Throughout the phases, the "main" percussion often resembles a heartbeat, which I find neat because in the Lore™ Scaramouche has lots of refrences to his heart. As a newly abandoned puppet, he had so much emotion, and after his betrayels, he would go on to quote "Scrub away worldly filth from my chest" / "Scrub away any last trace of human emotion" in order to recieve a Gnosis, which is basically like a cracked battery of godly power, which he uses to replace his heart to become a "False God" (the giant Evangelion mech that he's in.) I personally interpret this "heartbeat" as a sort of "mockery"? Or irony would be a better word. Sort of a jab at how Scaramouche was so obsessed with getting rid of his emotions and "heart" in order to not be hurt again, but ended up just getting tricked by the Fatui who promised to make him a god. Someone else also pointed out in a different reaction that the Inazuman/Japanese breaks in the later phases were Scaramouche's pre-betrayel person, Kunikishiki (idk how to spell it) whom he wanted to "bury" along with his emotions. However, he cannot bury his past self, just like he cannot truly rid himself of his heart. Idk, I just think its neat :D

Since you liked the sound design part, you could react to “Before the Light Fades” which is part of Sumeru Withering ost. In my opinion the Withering osts are the current pinnacles of genshin sound design that manages to be very amazing with very minimal melodic elements. These Withering osts are mostly themes about weak saplings of Life fighting against the ultimate incarnation of Death (called Marana in Sanskrit and in game) itself, which is why there’s a lot of atmospheric elements and not much exciting characters.

It actually has 7 regions, but it used to have 8, but after the cataclysm (I won’t go into too much depth, but the cataclysm was when an alchemist named rhindottir, hailing from the atheist nation of khaenri’ah, commit blasphemy and uncovered forbidden knowledge, therefore the corrupt gods of celestia intervened and… cursed the population of Khaenri’ah to eternal torture) khaenri’ah is now… no longer existing

What you've seen is mostly trailer music and boss battle music. But there are also very good non-boss battle music themes like for example : Duel in the mist : kzbin.info/www/bejne/fIqzY5eDbbeHfK8 (music video) All 4 of sumeru battle themes : kzbin.info/www/bejne/qZy3q2OXhM6mjNU (all different kinds of banger) Enkanomiya battle theme : kzbin.info/www/bejne/i3a5dqCLjNiZepI (community loves this one) Die Mittsommernacht-Fantasie : kzbin.info/www/bejne/eZTPqahviZWnmbM (this one is special because it was made for a temporary event that had barely any fighting but they still made this crazy 4 minutes piece) Also there are many many good exploration and city themes that are more chill and cozy. There are dozens of them and these are the ones that we actually hear the most. Some examples for some small cities : Vimara village : kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y6LQYZ-GpJyZatk Konda village : kzbin.info/www/bejne/baGceJ-anZtmfrc Qinqce village : kzbin.info/www/bejne/inS1naOentRgaNE Port Ormos : kzbin.info/www/bejne/fWW4kpWNndefrpY

The whole song is on Latin, but parts with Japanese instrument with clean voice - are sang in Japanese. It is Scara remembering sweet times in the past in homeland, and then getting back to the time when he is this evil demigod in mechanical armour.

If you have time, I hope you can have a try to play the game. Not only becasue the music is tightly related to the stroy line and character, play the game will give us a new version of the music. Not only that the genshin music is more like a background music, being in that environment will enhance the music. But also the game itself is a masterpiece. I don't think it will let you down (Look at Marco haha)

I like that you analyze both the music and the story behind the lyrics and character, it's fun to watch. Can you please watch Childe/Tartaglia's boss theme next? He's a part of the same "organization" as La Signora and Scaramouche, so they share some leitmotifs in the song, but their themes all sound so different to one another. Childe's boss theme is still one of my favorite now despite being released really early before most of the other boss themes (including La Signora's and Scaramouche's)

Your analysis on the music is spot on, but there was a problem with those lyrics, i dont think they were properly translated, i have seen english and spanish translation of this song and is nothing like this, for example, scharamouche last line of the song is supposed to be "i wish i have never been born at all..." just like bohemia rapsodia, a song with which scharamouche has a lot to do with. Scharamouche says this line too in his trailer. The lyrics i have read talk about scharamouche demise. I would suggest to do a reaction to the songs again with some other video with better lyrics. Awesome video, amazing interpretation of the song.

The lyrics on the video were made before the official latin lyrics were released, so the translation is very far off from the actual lyrics.

Hi Jhulian R, I just wanted to tell you that in this theme song the actual voice actor for the character was the one who sang this song. Something to also note in phase 2 of the song is that he speaks Japanese when he sings by himself like it's his inner voice, but he speaks in Latin when they choir comes in like he's being influenced by the group he's working with
