Adding reverb in a mix isn't new at all. Artists and engineers have been using reverb since before recording was even a common thing.
There are a lot of benefits to adding reverb when you're mixing. It can create a single space for everything to live in, or create a new sense of atmosphere to an otherwise dry sound.
When adding reverb to any mix, you have to think about how you want to use that reverb and how many things you want to have that same sound.
This video shows how to easily send multiple tracks to a single reverb and the benefits of doing so. We also go over sending from a bus versus sending from channels.

06:04 I love the reverse panning of the reverb, Tim. I'll have to watch how you set that up a couple of times to see what you just did, as I feel like I was watching someone do a slight-of-hand card trick, but I should be able to catch it after a couple more views. What I'm wanting to do is to try this reverse-pan reverb on my double-tracked acoustic chord-melody guitar (one take on the left and the other on the right), sending a light kiss of reverb from the left side to the right... and vice versa. I think this would create a really nice full/fat sound. Thanks Tim!

If you keep your good work up and stay motivated, this will be one of those channels easily reaching several 100.000 subs (still a nieche u know). I will keep an eye on this channel haha. Let's see if you have the needed patience :D Btw, great video as always :) Like your content!

Great video! I wonder if there is any method to add pre-delay for each track before sending to the same reverb. Thanks.

You could double bus! Send to a bus with a delay on it then send the output of that "pre-delay" bus to your reverb!

Hi Tim! Thanks for your great and informative videos. A couple of questions. What's your reason for using bus channels as FX sends as opposed to "FX" channel sends? And, what's the reason and advantage for sending all of your FX (and fx bus) channels to an FX bus, instead of just sending all your FX channels directly out to your mix bus? Thanks for taking the time to answer! Cheers.
@TimTalksAudio
@TimTalksAudio 10 ай бұрын
Good questions! In older versions of S1, you were not able to create Sends on FX channels, but you could on buses. I sometimes use a send from an FX return bus to throw to another effect. FX channels now can have sends, but i'm a creature of habit and still use buses. I then create a folder and bus (they are set to work the same for me) for my fx so I can then do even more routing as needed, or adjust the overall levels of the FX! You could do the same thing with a VCA fader, but again, creature of habit. Happy mixing!

Thanks for the video! Is it always recommended to route the output of your sends to an extra FX bus and then to the master (or the bus where everything comes together) like you did? I'm asking cause on some of my beats, i routed for example sends that are only affecting my drums, back into my drum bus (reverb, delay etc). Or should the dry signal and the wet signal of those sends always be separated? Hope this was understandable.
@Sackrefied
@Sackrefied 4 жыл бұрын
I'd just say trust your ears in this case. If you want the reverb to also be affected by the plugins on that drum bus. (e.g. compression) Sending the effects into an FX bus before sending it to the master also gives you the option to maybe add a bit of saturation or compression or other plugins, so you can "glue" them together a bit. And you can easily change the level of all the effects.
@TimTalksAudio
@TimTalksAudio 4 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't say it's recommended or discouraged at all. It's a matter of personal workflow. I like to have my FX routed to a bus, but that may not work for you and your workflow. In your example, I would just be careful not to create a feedback loop!
@mixinthecloud3338
@mixinthecloud3338 4 жыл бұрын
If you return you effects to the sending buss you will get a feed back loop so you need to be careful about that.

@@TimTalksAudio I only return effects to a buss if I want to send from that buss to another effect, such as a delay returning to the buss which then sends to a reverb. You could do this in-line on an effects channel but the buss offers more or different options. No right, no wrong, just a different workflow.

Oh wow, you just saved me a future headache. I'm just tracking drums for drumless covers. I'm only using 2 toms, 1 OH, snare, and bass. I should just use effects. That will work?
@TimTalksAudio
@TimTalksAudio 3 жыл бұрын
If i can suggest, go with 2 overheads and remove the tom mics. You'll get wider sounding drums and the overheads can capture the toms.

i am new to working with daw. one question: you make a send to the bus with the reverd on, for the lead vocal. I understand that. Can you for example put the backings in a group and send them to a bus where there is an effect (in this case reverb). And if you then, for example want to tweek the volumes separately pres command (I think). I'm still learning so my way of thinking is asking questions. THX 4 the vid. google tranl. i am dutch.

If you want to be able to adjust the individual send amounts on your different backing tracks, you can add sends to the individual channels or sub groups as needed. If I have 4 background vocals (2 male and 2 female for example) and I want one pair to feed the reverb more, I can increase the send from those channels/sub-group, or decrease the send on the second channels/subgroup.

Make sure the mix control on your reverb is set to 100% wet. If you create the send and don’t put a plugin on the bus/fx channel, you’re just doubling the volume of what you are sending.

Pretty good stuff, however all of this could be done with the effects returning to an Fx channel and not a buss. When mixing I will use a buss channel for effects returns if I want to be able to send from the return to another effect. Effects channels are already solo-safed for channels sending to them. If you use a buss for the return you need to solo-safe the buss solo.
@TimTalksAudio
@TimTalksAudio 4 жыл бұрын
Correct, FX channels are activated with solo safe already on, but that’s not what works in my workflow. FX channels are more difficult to route to another bus, and since I route everything to a “Mix/Print” bus, it doesn’t work for me. Thanks for the comment though!
