Great work, but the green growth only goes down a foot or so below the waterline (I served on these ships so know from having to clean them). The rest of the under hull area is generally flat and only lightens when in dry dock and the hull has dried. Not trying to criticize your effort I just wanted to help describe the way the actual ships weather.

Looks pretty damn good. The only real critique I have is we don’t paint the escape trunks with the white whatever they are. I’ve been on subs since 2005 and have never seen a boat painted with them. But the seaweed skirt looks pretty good. That’s what it will look like after we get underway for a few days following a long maintenance availability in port. I’m going to assume this is a VA class boat stationed in Pearl since that’s pretty close to what they look like here. Well done.

Well done. Too often people will streak the weathering below waterline. You showed a great way to get that splotchy or mottled look needed for below the waterline. Excellent presentation! Only critique is after all that weathering, the prop is shiny. They get weathered too!

Are you putting thinner on the cotton swabs when you blend or just using them dry?
@matthewcaughey88983 жыл бұрын
Subs are deencrusted far more often then other ships. Plus the hull paint is chemically active so that stuff can’t grow on it. The Navy spends a lot of money to be sure the sub fleet is ready to rock at 100 percent 24/7
@Absolutecorn57672 жыл бұрын
Not to mention the coating on the subs would make rust formation nearly impossible. Almost no metallic elements are exposed on the hull
@matthewcaughey88982 жыл бұрын
@@Absolutecorn5767 some rust does appear but those are typically sacrificial anodes. Pieces of metal designed to rust first and protect the hull. They’ve been a feature on most steel hull ships since the beginning

Outstanding work. Two things I noticed though. 1) The waterline is too level. Submarines usually have a natural 1-3 degree up angle while surfaced. You can sort of see what I’m talking about in that first picture of the Dallas. 2) The non-skid should be a bit wider across the deck. I was also hoping you were going to paint the subtle lines that define the edges of the SHT tiles. But still, beautifully done.
@briansonnenfelt71252 жыл бұрын
Brian Cates I came looking to see if he did the same with the SHT. I’m building the ustafish (Greeneville) and was hoping he had a better idea than I do, which is placing Tamiya Tape all across it to give it the tiles and texture…kinda. But it looks like that’s probably my only option.

Worth noting (might have missed a comment of course) but the tidelines would only be on a submarine that's been at dock for a fair while. Once underway the first dive would usually be plenty deep enough to blow all that crepe right off the anechoics.

The paint job is excellent. However, I think you were a bit shortchanged by the model itself. That's a PCU (pre-commissioning unit) and that's why you have all those surface details like conduits and what have you. The acutal surface would be MUCH SMOOTHER due to all the anechoic tiles covering everything in sight. Take a look at the Bronco SSN-21 Seawolf class for an idea of what the surface would actually be like. You can get that same surface here by either sanding down the excess or by layering on sheet styrene of a very thin make.
