Ozzy was right about Steve Marriott, I'm 74 now and heard and seen most, but that bloke had the best Rock/Blues voice I've ever heard, a wail that could lift a roof off, combined with a raw, soulful delivery. If you don't agree try '30 Days in the Hole,' the studio version with the Blackberries.

Too bad that Steve Marriott died so young (44), I would have loved to see him return to glory as a grand old man of rock. I think he would be much more appreciated now than when he sadly died in relative obscurity, although those of us who knew of him KNEW he was a genius. Ozzy has been quoted as saying "When Steve Marriott died, part of me died with him" - sweet 💔

I was born in 1970. The same year as Sabbath's debut album. So I missed what many older guys said was a "shock" when they heard them for the first time. But I remember hearing Sabbath from my older friends' in about 1978, and I was hooked. I wanted to hear ALL of Black Sabbath. And hear it I did. Sabbath turned me into a Metal Head, and I went on to listen to Judas Priest, Metallica, Pantera, Slayer, and even more.... But there is no way anyone can argue that he has been one of the most influential rock/metal figures there will ever be, and he along with Tony, Bill, and Geezer have been at least a small influence on ALL of Metal music. God Bless you, Ozzy!!

The #1 reason these guys (the classics of that era) were successful and have lasted as long as they have is because when they were kids starting out they didn't merely want to "make it". The HAD to make it. Their very DNA was influenced by the music they were listening to when they were young. That music made such an emotional impression on them that the thought of making gave them hope. When the narrator says "grinding poverty" he not just being anecdotal. They started out with nothing but desire.

So sad that so few in the US and younger generations even have heard of Steve Marriott, considered by many of his peers as the greatest soul/blues/rock singer ever. Here is a quote from Tony Iommi: "You know, Steve Marriott was the first choice to be Black Sabbath's vocalist. I tried everything I could think of to get him to agree, but he had other plans. He was Jimmy Page's first choice for Led Zeppelin, too. He tried as hard as I did. No skin off Ozzy or Robert Plant, both great in their ways, but Marriott was it. The greatest singer ever.Page & I agreed, we would have killed to have him".

However, I do remember Humble Pie. I had a copy of "Smokin" when I was in high school which I listen to still.
