I've seen the clean the edge of the bucket before putting the cover on but never add water to it..... Great tip! The how to put mud in the 6in knife is the best. I would take forever to apply mud for tape and screws so I can't wait to try this. I've seen others do your method but they never explained how to apply it..... Your description really helps man! Been watching you for years and love your videos. I do this all week but yet I still watch this on the weekends. Keep up the great work!

That is the advantage of using a bucket of mix over bag/box mix!! I very carefully have to twist the bag / box mix so as not to drop & contaminate with dry mud!! Great tip guys!!!

The only thing I would do differently is tape with green lid mud. Green lid has glue in it and adheres the tape better (My old drywall finishing boss was ANAL). Another funny thing. He never let me use both sides of my knife. especially my corner knife, 4 or 6. Because 1. It rounds the edge over time so it doesn't gouge into the adjacent corner. And 2. There's a bend to the knives using just one side and the corners get rounded over so you don't get corners dragging along your joints.

No. This type of celling needs to be oiled and stained only. The center boards are the only ones that can be painted because they do not have to account for multiple expansions or contractions in the wood.

The wood is behind the drywall, that’s what it’s nailed to, and it definitely doesn’t expand and contract seeing as temperature in the house will be pretty consistent 99% of the time.

This is the BEST mud and tape tutorial that gets down to business quickly. You had so many tips in there. I've watched dozens of others, but none have given me the confidence to start doing this as this video has. That bonus tip at the very end is crazy... I didn't even know you can pour that much water into a mud bucket overnight and not ruin it.

I’m a general contractor. This guys tips should really be used. His technique is also standard for most mudders that aren’t using the level5 mud/taping tool…. If you can’t afford $1000+ for it then use this man’s technique and maybe expand upon because there’s only so much a video will teach you Best of luck fellow contractors and DIYers

I have seen SO MANY "drywallers" apply tons of mud then spend their time GRINDING the excess off. My God! Light layers makes less work. I HATE sanding, but the rest of the drywalling process. It's an art, when done right

Just watched an earlier vid and it's crazy to see how Paul has grown into being on camera. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! My house settled a few years ago and i have to re-tape and mud all the drywall joints in my century home. Uggh!!! A friend who is skilled in this craft came by leaving me supplies and a "way too fast" tutorial. He left me a 12 inch blade, and as a woman, that was too heavy for me overhead on a ladder, but he insisted that was the only way. So that project never began. I can't tell you how happy I am to see that 6 inch blade being your #1 tool of choice. My project is going to RESTART, thanks to you!!

It's an okay video at best I'm not sure what part of the country you did taping in butt he is not showing everything the correct or easy way that's for sure . Lol the DIY will get the basic idea I suppose you never mud the paper corner bead and then put it on the corner he's left-handed striping the joints with his right hand that would be awkward for anybody. You don't put mud or the first coat on the wet metal . And dragging your blade across the screws when your spotting screws is fine I guess, you could just cap them . But you definitely don't want to scrape into them like he's doing that's a good way to find a pretty good Nick in your knife. Anyway LOL maybe you were a hanger or framer definitely not a taper though I wouldn't imagine. I think The Kilted guys much better for the Layman to watch to learn the taping anyway just my two cents but it's okay they'll get the idea not a horrible video but definitely not all the secrets and tricks LOL

I finished my basement and I clearly did something wrong while mud/taping. I have a lot of spots where the tape can now be seen bulging through the mud and paint. What would you guess I did wrong and is there a recommended repair that doesn't require a complete redo? btw From one teacher to another, well done sir! I was able to comprehend and absorb your instruction while playing this vid at 1,75x Clear evidence to support how clearly you speak, both pace and annunciation, along with how well crafted your delivery of content is presented. We had an unused ice-maker 1/4” copper water supply line leak and damage the ceiling drywall in the basement. I spent the day today cutting out the crumbly drywall and failed tape joints. Tomorrow my son will help me hang a replacement panel, then I will get busy with the Easy Sand 45 before the final taping and texturing and repainting the whole ceiling. This video is getting lots of replay, and is helping A LOT on this project.

I'm an electrician, but like most guys who do any construction related job for a living, I've done a little of everything over the years. My partner and I have flipped a few homes and we're hands on through the entire process. Considering how crazy material costs are right now, if we didn't do most of it ourselves we'd go broke! lol Anyway, filling drywall is one of the jobs that I hate the most! I can do it, but I'm not fast and they'll be more sanding to do than there would be if a pro did it. All us guys in the trades pass around favors around here, so that's what I do when it's time to fill drywall. They know I'll remember them when they need something. We're all friends, so we all break balls. I tell them they need me more than I need them because I don't need a permit to fill drywall. 😂

This is awesome. I am drywalling my entire house, 1st time, and I first watched Jeff's video Drywall A to Z (Home Renovision). His video is great, and so I started on my house. It's hard to remember everything, so after doing the closets, I decided to watch Stud Pack's video for a refresher. I CANNOT STRESS ENOUGH THE IMPORTANCE OF A REFRESHER VIDEO. After a few practice pieces you'll know what you can and can't do well. When I watched Stud Pack's video, I was especially curious how they mud factory edges and corners, something I needed to improve on. I was glued to this video as it was like someone was lifting the veil on all my questions. Fantastic content as always. Succinct, friendly, very helpful, and this guy makes you feel like you can do any job. Thanks!

Just a recommendation for the future. Don't use plus 3 mud to tape doesn't work very well with the tape and also created bubbles of air because is not for that. The plus 3 is for applying coats and texture because is light and easy to sand instead using plus 3 for taping use all purpose mud (the green box) it does have more glue and stick to the tape and wall very easily. You can tell the difference between all purpose and plus 3, also never use all purpose for applying coats or texture. It's impossible to sand. Great videos and keep going. Good vibes.

PHENOMENAL Video! I've been building a house using as much "sweat equity" as feasible. Even with 10' ceilings, installing the drywall was no problem (thanks to my Harbor Freight Drywall hoist!). HOWEVER, learning the art of mudding and taping has been a royal PITA, in spite of having been an attentive student at "KZbin University!!! Unquestionably, this is THE BEST DIY video I've come across! It's a shame I didn't stumble across this one WEEKS ago!!!!

A couple additional tips for you: 1. Fold your inside corner tape where it meets the ceiling and clip the end at a 45 degree angle before application for all three corners to eliminate build up of mud in the ceiling corners. 2. Partially clip tape end corners to avoid flaring (I.e. don’t leave a square end) 3. You absolutely can apply mud over the tape during the bonding (1st coat), just make sure they don’t intersect-i.e. coat paper only on butt seams but not beveled seams; and coat on 1/2 of all inside corners on all three where they meet. This technique saves time and steps. If you were to wait, you would still have to do this but then wait until it dries before applying the perpendicular joint. Depending on the size of the job, you would save a day of waiting/dry time. Lastly, instead of filling that deep void in the ceiling where the new meets the old, you can WET SHIM instead without taking the sheet down. Pull the screws within the voided area and squirt a few pulses of canned polyurethane foam in the screw holes, then immediately reinsert the screw but only 1/2 a turn by hand to allow the foam to push the sheetrock back out. (don’t use window/door foam as it’s not structural) The screw acts as a plug to prevent oozing. This technique takes some practice to get the correct amount of foam squeezed in. If the sheetrock sprung back before applying foam, then you know it’s a true void. In this case turn the screw until it’s almost flush after foam application to prevent over bulging with foam. This technique is useful for spots where there’s and obvious void. Think of it as concrete slab leveling for sheetrock. Hope this helps.

We use the all purpose mud to put the tape on it dries really hard the plus 3 it’s softer and the tape peels off easier we only use plus3 for the coating first and second coat. Really good video lots of tips

This is very helpful, and thank you. I am a DIYer. I am very good at repairing walls. I learned how to do that a long tome ago, and I can make a flawless repair of a drywall hole of any size. But I am remodeling a bathroom now, and it is the first time I have ever flat out replaced drywall. I should have watched this sooner. Yesterday I "prefilled" all of the gaps. I didn't even know that was what I was doing, but letting the mud dry in the bigger gaps a day before coating the whole walls just made sense, prior to instruction. What I did NOT know was to use a different mud to do that, so..."woops," I guess. But because I watched this at this stage, now I know to go back and check that "prefill" work for shrinkage, before moving on. I will fill in with more mud as necessary. Glad you made this. Very well put together!! Beyond expectation! As a pro drywaller I use durabond easy sand for my first coat on any gaps in remodels. It's just a stronger formula than the 45min you used.

Agree Green lid heavy for tape joints and first coat. Definitely holds up better in low income housing. Lightweight isn't strong

Ive always used steel mini plaster veneer beads. Super clean corners and you can plumb them with a level if you have some really funky corners. Only con is it takes a little longer but the end result is so good

All the self help tutorials I’ve ever watch this dude is the most efficient teacher. He goes over what to do.. why to not do something and common problems and how to fix those. One of the things missing from self help is what happens if you make a mistake and all guys doing this long term could benefit us first time self helpers with tips on mistakes they maybe have made and help us along the way. Hung drywall by myself in my house and about to start mudding. Really appreciate the tips bc every time I’ve tried it I ended up sanding a ton. Also great tip on keeping your mud wet in the bucket.

Eliminate/cut down on your sanding. 1) Always spread your mud flat on the wall and smooth it out "before" it sets. No high places. 2) Use long smooth strokes. No paddy cake. 3) When you have edge lines or rough places just "gently" scrape them smooth with an 8" knife. 4) Try to limit your sanding to feathering the "edges" of the mud. That's where it is most visible. I'm no pro but the above practices have helped me a lot.

Hey guys. Im a GC in Wisconsin, and the only two things I do differently are...I use the green bucket instead of the blue. And, I use plastic corner applied with a spray adhesive. It is quick and no pre-fill is required in the corners. Otherwise, everything else is exactly how I do it. Great job guys. Excellent as always. I'm onto the drywall stage on my current job this Monday. Your video was great to get my brain in the right space.

Plastic corners glued on is how hacks do it. 1 tiny bump and that corner bead is trashed. Man up and use metal bead attached with fastners. Unless a quality job that lasts is less important to you than how fast you can complete the job...

Me too…drywall repairs are not easy for new DIY’s specially when your home was built inside with plaster instead of sheet rock. Because plaster requires more of a specialized skill than drywall, I’m afraid of making or getting into a worse hot mess. But the guy on the video somehow gives me back confidence to attack minor repairs though. Bless people like that on YT for teaching us.

One thing you didn’t mention is that if you don’t bed the tape right it could start to bubble. It needs moisture to bond with the mud. Pre mixed mud sometimes doesn’t have enough moisture in it and you get wrinkles and bubbles.

Wish I watched this before starting. I have an appreciation for those who mud and tape. There's a lot of factory edges meeting up with cut edges in the room I'm doing so you got that 1/8th inch gap all over the place. I spent so much time trying to feather it on the first tape pass that I can tell it's going to be a long process now lol

Hey stud pack! Awesome videos! I have a quick question about the mud for setting the tape. Have you ever used the green lid all purpose mud for that step? I’m not sure how true this is but I was told it’s best for there because it has a higher concentration of glue to go into the paper on the drywall and tape.

You are correct, green is for taping, blue is for coating over the tape its dry.

Quick question/observation. When demonstrating the screw filling technique, I noticed a bunch of ripples in the tape on the horizontal tape joint just below the screws. Do you guys worry about that and fix it, or just coat it in the next coat of mud? I have seen other drywall pros make their mud loose and wet for the tape so it soaks in and supposedly prevents this. Keep making great videos! Thanks for all you guys do!

It's not an issue in the flats and paper tape has a tendency of wrinkling a little bit. Just do you best to get it on flat and smooth.

Also, for some reason when mixing hot mud, or any powder, it's better to add the liquid first. Including baking cakes and mixing thinset.
