Hey gang! There are a lot of comments asking why we didn't use self leveling underlayment (SLU) in the kitchen. The first floor slab is 35 x 35 feet square roughly. If we use SLU in the kitchen, where would we stop? The new flooring (by Flooret) is going to be installed everywhere except the master bath. If we used SLU, we'd have to do the entire first floor or have a small step somewhere. We would need at least 200 bags of SLU costing over $6000.00. This is a major expense just in material not to mention all the other ramifications. Remove/re-install every interior door. The amount of SLU against the front door threshold would approach 2" thick. Now you've got to raise the front door frame. The list of issues goes on and on. SLU is not a cure all and even the name is a misnomer, it doesn't self level. It takes a lot of effort to get it right and you only have one chance. Thanks for watching and thanks for all the support!!!

Paul these are all valid points . SLU is expensive but there are other ways to level a floor without using SLU.

Nice job on a pretty complicated cabinet install. The leveling system would be a lifesaver on a big kitchen like that. I just finished an island that is 9' x 4.5'. I installed it in a 100 year old 2 room schoolhouse, that my friends are turning into their house. The floor was less than 1/4" difference overall. I was pleasantly surprised!

I work in a cabinet shop. I deal with the Blum slides, fixing clips, and brackets day in and day out. As far as the rear brackets in the cabinet go, they can also be moved around left to right and up and down. So if there is a second piece of wood behind the frame that isn't straight, you can use the rear bracket to move the back of the slide to where the drawer front sits flush on top of the face frame, then lock it down. I personally love that rear adjustment alone, as though it works, if you jack it up high enough, the drawer will fight you going back in as it won't clip into where it should be, and you'll wonder why its sticking out.

In my own kitchen, you can tell where decades of moisture exposure has caused a little swelling along the bottom of some of the cabinetry. I have no experience installing cabinets, but I've wondered why the bottom edges of kitchen cabinets are rarely (never?) sealed when there's every reason to believe those will be exposed frequently to water, either thru routine mopping or occasional spills. Seems like it would be well worth the little extra expense and time to hit those bottom edges with RedGuard (or other waterproofing coating) or at least primer & paint.

For my kitchen that I did 6 years ago, I used mostly ladder frames for the cabinets I built. The ladder frames save on the expensive pre-finished plywood sheets, because you can get 6 sides from a 4x8 sheet instead of just 4 sides when you only need 30.5" of height instead of 34.5". For two large pantry cabinets I used the ez-level. They are each 8' tall and 3' wide. My wife only has one stand mixer, but they are not light at all. The cabinets carcasses, drawers, shelves, by themselves are going to be 250 lbs or so. Add things like sauces, pasta, flour, sugar, oil, and one stand mixer they are surely approaching 500lbs each. The ez-level system has been rock solid and made getting everything plumb and level a breeze.

I take a thick lead pencil or a black marker push the cabinet into it ( the pipe ). Now you hv your mark , cut from the back into the front just enough where your drill bit pokes thru then finish cut from the front ! Always use a clean sharp hole saw. Not sure about all the cabinet cutting I will hv to absorb that ! In the past I used separate toe kicks , ladder system and scribed it building the cabinets accordingly !

Thank you for a great year of entertaining presentations with the garage build. I've been giving serious consideration to making wall hanging base cabinets with mostly drawers for a Zuper custom look. The challenging part will be splitting a refrigerator and using a remote mounted compressor like in a commercial application. I will have a full-size dish washer and fridge in the larger than normal pantry anyway, but a floating fridge would be off the hook unique. I briefly considered adding a floating/suspended island too, but the juice wasn't worth the squeeze and I didn't want an obstructed view. I wish you and your family 'n crew a Merry MAGA Christmas !

Kitchen will come out great, but living in a house with such a slope will become a big nuisance over time. I would personally take steps to level the floor. Not using (only) SLU, I know there have been comments about that already. But filling in like 5 cm of floor drop doesn't require the (sole) use of SLU, you could use regular screed (small aggregate concrete) for that. Perhaps finish it with SLU if needed. And also, I would also get as much information as I could about whether the slab will continue to sink and what to do about it. It's a very big issue, imho.

Welcome to Texas! The dirt here is brown clay and dries out and cracks causing foundations to move. Foundation fixer companies are everywhere. My home has tension wires throughout to try and keep the slab from shifting.

Another way to handle this is to build a frame that becomes the toekick. Level the frame, mount the cabinets, then scribe some trim to cover the gap.

I was working with what I had. A lot of folks have uneven floors.

@@StudPack Every installer sees uneven floors. It's not a problem if you start at the highest point of the floor. You made hanging kitchen cabinets much more difficult.

My 1939 house's dining room is the same way. Now I know what to do when I get around to making my built ins! Question: I'm installing the cabinets on top of the original pine floor. Do I need to put anything for the EZ Level feet to sit on since the pine is so soft?
