From Old Red to Modern White. Today we're taking on the challenge of giving this house a fresh coat of paint that will really make it stand out in the neighborhood. We picked up a Graco Magnum X7 for this project and give our full impressions of the thing in the video!

Hey Gang! We're seeing a lot of comments regarding the sprayer so we just wanted to clear some things up for those of you watching! In this video you'll see a "tailing" or "fingering" effect, this is caused when the sprayer pressure isn't high enough to spray the specific paint you're using. We had overlooked a key step in the instructions and it just happened to be the one discussing pressure, oops! This video is Day 1 of us using this sprayer, for years we brushed and rolled on our paints so this was a very new process for us! The video isn't meant as a tutorial, and we're super glad a lot of the more experienced painters in the comments have let us know that these traits in the spray patterns aren't the best. 5 months later we're still using this sprayer and we have it tuned down to second nature, we think this is reflected in our most recent painting video so make sure to go check that one out and let us know what you think! As far as the paint goes it is a PPG Exterior Paint & Primer in One. 100% Acrylic Latex Eggshell color.

If it's newer brick yes, inspecting older brick will produce lots of problems, mainly small cracks that get worse every year. Sealing it well with paint(at least two coats) will protect it from coming apart in the future. Many older brick homes have multiple problems. Almost anything needs maintinence, an idea that escapes most people today.

Great piece of equipment, have used one for years. A little trick I learned from an old time painter: Buy a box of knee high nylon socks. Place one over the inlet pipe to the airless. Great filter. Throw away after use.

I've been doing that exact same thing except with paint strainers. Those knee highs are probably much cheaper 👍

I prefer to stain brickwork rather than paint, the stain is absorbed into the brick and changes the colour of the brick as opposed to painting which is adding a layer on top of the brick which over time will peel and require constant maintenance

No worries on the learning curve for the sprayer! After 50-100gal you will master it! Also one tip (I see in the comments you use filters) I always poured into a fresh bucket. A lot of the 5Gal buckets from local stores can get goopy at the bottom after sitting and you spend too much time fighting boogers. Depending on the size of the job, I open all buckets and pour ~25% from 2-3 buckets through a piece of aluminum windows screen I had on a "frame". Close up all buckets and pump from the "clean" bucket.

Added tip, hook hose up to the inlet and recycle paint from hose back into the bucket with the sprayer line, spray into paint bucket until water just starts to come out. That saves about a quart if you have a 50ft line.

I've been researching this sprayer. I've seen folks use paint strainers before running it through the system. Gets them clumps out. Throwing that damp rag over the bucket helps. Smart.

Get a lid for the 5 gallon paint cut a v notch to the little hole and use that to cover your paint then clog the rest of the hole with a wet rag and then the whole thing with a rag you'll never have to worry about dropping your rag into the paint good job brother

The one color looks nice but I am doing my brick on the front of the house to coordinate with my new siding I had put on only I am using a light gray for the base coat of the brick and will fade two darker colors of gray sporadically on the bricks to make it look like real brick tones only in gray. I used this method on my fire place a few years ago and it gives it a tremendous look.

I would have just painted the trim to make it different looking and left the brick alone to be cleaned like new with acid washing it several times making them look good as new and I'm sure that would not have depleted the value of the home with the pait job on the classic red brick that someone paid dearly to use and the installer so meticulously sorted threw the brick to mix the pattern up installing them .

And because this brick is textured it doesn’t look as cheesy as paint on brick usually does

Primer and paint will ruin brick where moisture is present especially if there’s winter freezing. If you must do it you should use line wash pain or a breathable paint such as a mineral based paint or a silicate paint. You will have to repaint here and there but you won’t have the premature brick and mortar degradation

Fantastic job , your son should have followed behind your spraying with a roller to fill in the cracks and make it look uniformed . Also if you still have the unit , the unit is not design to last along time. You may get 2 or 3 homes and then the pump usually goes. If you get the contractor units with easy change pumps they are made too last.. oh yeah I’m sure you bought the $30.00 hose swivel.. nice job never the less..
@amthevision8931
@amthevision8931 2 жыл бұрын
I disagree about the pump going bad. I think you’re thinking of the handheld sprayers with hopper. Some graco models have non serviceable pump and other pro models have replacement pumps. This machine x7 and x5 can last 10-15 years as I’ve heard on KZbin as long as you maintain and clean properly. The blue pump armour is a must for long term storage and for $500-800 they are worth the buy unless you can afford to spend more from the beginning

Painting a brick house is ALWAYS a BIG MISTAKE! The beauty of bare brick is the many decades of maintenance-free service. Yes, I know it's cool and trendy, but it's a huge dis-service in the long run. The current or future owners will have to scrape and repaint and as the coats of paint accumulate the shorter the life of the paint. Eventually, ALL the paint needs to be sandblasted or removed with paint stripper. And then probably the mortar joints repaired (tuck pointing). So PLEASE just spare the home and future owners of this horrible fad!
