We need more black midwives and OB/GYN providers. Education and motivation from the beginning of the pregnancy is vital. I was fortunate of having a black RN when I delivered my last child and she definitely advocated for me when I was in active labor. When I wanted to give up and get an epidural, she helped remind me that I was so close and I’m so glad I had her.

Just because they are black doesn't mean they'll be any better. I had a black nurse present alongside my BD, and she said I was making faces when I told her I felt my baby coming. The only 2 Doctors on the maternity floor, were in the next room birthing another baby. I had instinctively tried to place my hand in a position to catch my daughter's head, and she moved my hand and said she didn't see anything. Then she took several steps back and chuckled with my BD about the faces I was making. I had no choice but to yell through my contractions to get someone's attention. The Doctors ran in and didn't even have time to put on gloves. I was crowning, and they caught my baby on a blanket. The Doctors were Caucasian. 🤷🏽‍♀️

Having a C Section causes the body to go through so much trauma especially when they’re cutting through different layers of skin in order to get to the baby. It takes the body years to heal and you will most definitely feel the pain throughout your years of living . 😩

Please know… the earlier you get to the hospital the higher your chances are of having a C-section. I’ve had one emergency C-section and 4 VBACs (vaginal birth after C-section) I’ve had a white male doctor and a black male doctor for the VBACs. You have to shop for an OB…before you get preggers. You want a smart and compassionate doctor.

They wanted to give one to my mom because my sister hadn't dropped yet. There was no distress on her or my mother, but they needed the bed. My mom said no and as soon as she dropped my mom pushed like 3 times and she was out. When I was born they wanted to give my mom a c-section because I didn't turn my mom said no and told them to turn me. They turned me and I shot right out. We're both known as cannon ball babies. I was so blessed to not be forced with my first. They were very patient with me. I was so tired in so much pain and wasn't progressing at 28 hours of active labor I actually asked them for a C-section. But when I went to another hospital that was advertised as "Vbac" friendly for a Vbac they tried to rush me into another C-section. I wouldn't let them and they didn't like it at all.

And I needed a c-section and they refused and forced me to deliver my baby. He was over 10 pounds and he ended up having a brain hemorrhage being forced through the vaginal canal. My son has life long brain damages being denied a c-section. I think it’s their individual medical care model with in the bigger medical care system that’s not working. They can’t look at details of each situation to make a best independent medical plan.

Great segment! 👏👏👏 My experience with doctors (and other institutions) is that they always seem to desire to “put me in my place”. Its seems so weird but I always get a vibe that they feel they need to “handle” me. I’m very tall and dark skinned so I feel they are often intimidated by me. I notice people get aggressive or passive aggressive with me even though I am a feminine and soft spoken woman. I am not a “challenge” or a “threat” just by being black. I wish more people would stop being so uncomfortable around me. It’s not everyone but I do know when it’s happening. It’s definitely more than hospitals. I’ll tell you that right now. It’s systemic.

😢 I hate the target we have on our back. It’s heartbreaking. I’m a mom of two and both births were c-section. At 21, I was strong enough to push a child. However, I couldn’t deal with the contractions. So, I asked for the epidural and bam…like the last lady said, I wasn’t able to feel anything where it made it hard for me to push my first born out. So I ended up having an emergency cs. I’m happy to be alive but after my first experience, I was so afraid to have another child. I felt voiceless, powerless and alone. My second child was 6yrs later.. and I asked to have a natural vaginal birth and I was told that it would be high risk because I already had a hard cs pregnancy the first time. Yes I shopped around, but in my city/area..it’s very very very hard to find a black OBGYN or midwife.

Yes i have been called everything from stupid to a bad mother for not agreeing to c sections, i been told they wasn't going to deliver my baby if i dont agree , they even called cps. They pulled dad to the side and asked him how could he let me make stupid decision starting arguments between us.I have 5 children no c section, why do they want me to have c section you might ask.. because my 2nd child was 11# but this was right before a diabetes diagnosis and they let me go 2weeks over do with her, they say its a 10% chance of me having another big baby, which i havent because im now be treated for diabetes but in their mind everything you say is a lie, the trauma of how i was treated will always have me at odds and untrusting towards doctors.

I wasn’t pressured but I’m thankful I had a C-Section. At my 39 week appointment I still wasn’t dilated. We considered discussing induction at my 40 week appointment. I never made it to that appointment because my water broke on my due date. I went through labor for 12 hours with no progress. My cervix must be made of iron because I was not dilating at all even when they gave me a pill to induce labor…and my baby’s heart rate was rising and dropping. They decided to do a C-Section in hopes of saving him. When they got him out the cord was wrapped around his neck twice. If I delivered vaginally he would’ve been strangled! I’m saying this to say, before you decide to do one or refuse one look at what’s really going on during labor. Forget a birth plan! The only plan you should have is walking out of the hospital alive with your baby. You worked to hard being pregnant for nearly 10 months to walk out empty handed. Use wisdom!

I was told by my mom who is a BSN that they give drugs to keep the labor going (not in pushing stage) until morning so the dr doesnt have to be inconvenienced by coming in middle of night to deliver a baby. In the last 50 years ask anyone what hour they were born.. theres no middle of the night babies who were born in hospital. C section guarantees the dr is scheduled for a morning convenient time slot. Pretty sad state of affairs that drs do not want to do their jobs; they want us to work around their precious schedules while they rake in big bucks 😢 sad state

Ppl need to understand, everyone doesn’t qualify for a VBAC. All doctors do not do C-Sections the same. Some do horizontal cuts to remove babies, some do vertical cuts to remove babies. Depending on where the cut is placed and the internal scarring, the uterus can burst during contractions and childbirth with a VBAC. I understand now everyone wants to hire doulas and everything but a doula is not a doctor. A lot of people are opting for home births but ppl do not give the statistics of issues arising, not only with babies after a home birth but some women hemorrhaging, developing preemclampsia after giving birth and different things and dying because they’re at home listening to advice from a doula. I feel if your health is top tier, the baby isn’t breached and you’re not of advanced maternal age and your baby doesn’t have any disabilities before being born then yes, have a home birth, say no to C-Section. But with babies over 9 pounds, I would have baby at a hospital for not only my safety but to ensure my baby is safe during delivery. Also, giving birth young, your birth canal probably wouldn’t open enough for the baby’s head and shoulders to manuever through it.

I'm 🤍 & my doctor is a 🖤 lady from Africa...At least in my experience she's the best doctor I've ever had, she seems more caring & aware of patient pain/discomfort in general than the 🤍 ladies I've had.I don't know if my experience is unique or if it's just a general issue with the 🤍 healthcare culture overall🤔.

This is true. I remember with my second child, they were making everyone get c sections at the hospital I went to and the nurse stated was one of the lucky ones who didn't get one that day.

I had 2 c sections and they saved my life…they were very necessary and I’m black so I question this study…does there need to be specialized care for black women yes there should be to investigate these things…but assuming there is a nefarious motive financially…not in agreement vaginal births are very costly as well. The bad side of the cesarean is the after effects, sagging lower stomach and difficulty losing weight.

Another example as to why most us don’t trust doctors. I have to go out of way to find black doctors or providers of color. Even then, I’m always questioning them and try my best to advocate for myself. I shouldn’t have to do all this. God willing when it’s time for me to have a baby I’m 100% gonna advocate for myself and not back down.

When I had my first child they tried to give me an unnecessary c section.After the doctor left a nurse told me not let them force me to do it because I never needed it. It was very common at Suny Downstate Hospital. When you go to clinics you would hear all the black women in 2010 worried about getting a C-section.

They gave me options: they said whenever i had a contraction my son's heart rate would go down. I was 10 months 1 week and 2 days pregnant with him. My husband and I had a birthing plan and the c section wasn't in it. However with that news they gave us the option and told us the potential harm to my son because he wasn't getting enough oxygen. Once we heard that we prayed and decided to get a c section. I wish it was a natural birth but the circumstances.

I was told that since I had one previously, having my daughter naturally had more risk and it was safer to have a c-section. I was 41 when I had my daughter so her delivery was scheduled due to the increased risk of still births after the 39th week in older women. My first c-section was due to a bad reaction to the epidural and fear of me dying. By the time they got me to the O.R my heart rate had recovered but they did the c-section anyway.

Black women pls don't be too hard-headed. I initially wanted to fight against a c-section, but didn't because i was so weak. The cord was around my baby's neck.

That is why you had one, your baby’s cord was wrapped around its neck. If you would’ve pushed, you could’ve strangled your baby by cutting off its air supply because every one push to get the baby out, the baby goes back up three steps if that makes sense. Some ppl can push a baby out quick, others cannot. How would the doctor have known how much time it would’ve taken you to push the baby out so that they could’ve removed the cord from around the neck?

I actually had both mine naturally & the cord was wrapped twice around my daughters neck... but she's just fine. I seen the doctor unwrap it after I pushed her out... She'll be 16 November.

I know this goes without saying but medical facilities such as hospitals and clinics shouldn't be a for profit business. Too many stories of doctors basically either giving unnecessary diagnosis, surgeries, or medication just to get that insurance money

I've never heard of a c-sec reducing a woman's ability to have children. They will advise against you having more children after 3 or 4 c-secs, but that's different from an inability to have children.

Unless surgeons change their operating techniques, C-sections or any other dissections of the female's reproduction organs can hinder her ability to give birth. If it was sooooo' safe, how come they don't push this procedure on the yt. woman?

Also, a lot of Carribean women, Central American women and definitely South American women plan their C-Sections out because a lot refuse to push out babies. It happens a lot in SE FL to where the news started reporting on it. Hialeah Hospital does so many C-Sections but maybe it’s a cultural thing.
