Lucia, for my MA in Classical Studies Part 1 which is module A863, I wrote an EMA which I did at home and you can spend days doing it and I found the questions in my EMA very complicated, vague, daunting, and complex. I just scraped through my EMA. I submitted my EMA two days before the cut-off date because I live in Ottawa, Canada, so I am five hours behind the U.K. For my MA in Classical Studies Part 2 which is module A864, I wrote a final dissertation which I had been working on for months and it was definitely not easy to write where I had to organize, edit, and make changes to my chapters. I submitted my final dissertation three days before the cut-off date.

Sometimes I wander if I'd do better studying at The Open University because from the sound of it, it seems way more productive and easier to organise in a way that works for you!

Have to disagree with not annotating your hand book. I found the single most helpful thing in my exams is a hand book packed full of notes and examples ready to just copy into the answer book. Probably wouldn't have passed without them. However I'm aware that this is a personal preference. Good informative video though!!

Hi! Thanks for the video. So would you say its possible to do the 3 year full-time OU course while working full-time? And if lets say, you take longer than expected, its no issue, i.e., can you decide to take the exam later on?

Saludos

Hello Lucia, I am starting my BSc Hons in Mathematics and Physics in October 2018. I have been prepping for the last few months looking back at GCSE content and now A-level content for the subjects. I will probably spread it over a part-time duration as I will need to work to live. Would you say that Essential Maths 1 & 2 are both do-able at the same time? Great videos. Thanks Alastair

They’re 30 credits each and there’s a path (they have schedules etc) for people who do them together, so it’s definitely an option even if you’re going it part time

Hey, I went to a brick university for 2 year and was doing a Biomedical Science degree, I didn’t finish and obtained 165 credits, I’m in the process of getting my credits transferred so I only have to do just over 1 and a half years for the BSc open degree with OU, will I have a disadvantage if I do a degree with OU compared to a brick uni, will I even get a job, I don’t know what to do?
@konstantinossohos23494 ай бұрын
I am in a similar sitation. I have heard you can get into an MA at a brick uni if you've written well enough (a high 2:1 or a 1st), regarding jobs I am not too sure. If you have found something I wish you the best.

I only had one for my maths module and it was good, although I should have prepared a bit more as I ran out of time. But I passed it so it was alright.

Hi, I am studying at the OU Mathematics (full time, while working full time), I am almost finished with MST124 and continuing MST125, while having survived the boring first half of M140 (~75%) and doing SM123 to get back into physics, because I want to continue in computational or theoretical physics after I finish my BSc. I wanted to ask a few things: 1) Are you studying MST210 or MST224? How is it compared to MST125? 2) S111 and S217 are online only, like SM111. Is this "feature" problematic for you too? Not being able to print out TMA's or refer back to textbooks? In the university's forums there is quite a bit of negative feedback, but the decision makers of the institution keep pushing this format despite forcing students away from modules that use it. This was my case too, deciding on the maths only BSc instead of doing yours. Another major factor was the absence of pure math, which are necessary for GR and QM. 3) You mentioned that the exam was harder than the TMAs and iCMAs. Can you be more specific with a couple of relevant examples? For the ongoing assessment I can easily get up to 80% on a first quick pass of each problem, but need to spend at least the same time to bring the score up to 90%. Now since I haven't given any exams with the OU yet, I am really worried that the sample exam provided to us is not very representative. Anyway, I loved the videos you did on the OU, they were very informative and I hope you do more of them, maybe per module reviews... since we study very similar fields, at least I would find them very interesting :p
@LuciaMontesEN7 жыл бұрын
I’m doing MST210 next year, so I’m not sure how it compares to MST125. I don’t mind the contents being online although I would love physical books - you can still download pdf versions of the units (but they exclude videos and interactive content). The sample exam is quite similar to the one you do at the end of the year but not the TMA questions or iCMAs. If you practice the one you get given you’d be better of, I didn’t really have time do to them all last year and that’s why I found them a lot more difficult.

Hi Lucia, I've enrolled for MST124, starting in October. I managed to get a hold of what I think are the official OU past papers for the subject (found 3, from 2015-17) but I'm seeing 40 questions, ALL multiple choice?! Surely that can't be right, is it? In my previous exams at high school there was a multiple choice section A, which obviously meant you get one point or zero, depending if you get the correct answer. After that there was a more in-depth section B that allowed you to score marks by showing your working and thought process, even if your final answer was incorrect. PLEASE tell me the Open University exams aren't multiple choice only?!
@aabc89697 жыл бұрын
Hi Lang7 may i ask how you got those past papers please i am also inrolled for that module in october. I want to buy some books any tips will be great thanks
@Lang77 жыл бұрын
Hi Sara, I found the official past papers for MST124 on this website: www.oustudentsshop.com/maths-amp-computing-m-0/mst124---essential-mathematics-1----pdf-download There are past papers for other modules there as well if you are sitting more than just MST124. You need to register an account and then add them to your cart. They have the last 3 years MST124 papers available. I spoke to my tutor and he confirmed the exam procedure - the exam is 40 questions, ALL multiple choice. You have 3 hours to finish, so averaging just under 3 minutes to answer each question. Hope this helps and good luck!

Hi - Am seriously thinking of doing the OU course in maths and physics like you. I actually did a science degree years ago (25!) but got bored with it back then. Recently, got very interested in it again. And am thinking of doing the maths and physics degree like you. Just for fun! Questions for you. Is 90 credits in one year doable? (I work full time). Second - do all the modules start in Oct? (Ie can you start one n Oct and then start another in Jan?)
@LuciaMontesEN7 жыл бұрын
you can start in oct or jan/feb I think. For me 90 credits a year is ideal because I want to work in something related to the degree in the future, but it is quite a bit of work. If you're doing it just for fun, I'd recommend you do 60 a year so you don't get overwhelmed with all the assignments and still have free time for whatever you want to do.
@sahelraj25757 жыл бұрын
Hi - many thanks for the reply. I really appreciate it. Did you start both MS111 and MST 124 in Oct? Or did you start the MST124 in Jan/Feb - you see one of the things I am thinking of doing. Is starting the MS111 in Oct - and see if how it goes. And if it is ok - start the MS124 in Jan/Feb - (as for me I have done a quite a lot of maths as undergrad) - ie can you start them at different times. Also which courses are you going to do next year - MS125 and S217. I really really appreciate your replies - you ought to be very proud of yourself for doing an OU degree.
