During my two-year MA in Classical Studies, I always took notes for my TMAs, EMA, and final dissertation on a piece of paper instead of a computer because it would be easier for me to find when I had to write them. I always put the author, date, and page and the book where I got the source from.

Hi Lucia, Thank you for your videos as I'm following the same route. How did you find progressing from S111 to S217? I know they now recommend SM123 between S111 and S217, but obviously people take MST125, so it must be possible. I'm just curious how you felt they tied together? I will be taking MST124 before hand of course. Thanks for your response if you manage to, Mike :)

Which modules would you like to choose for your final year?
@aresgalamatis7022
@aresgalamatis7022 6 жыл бұрын
Judging from this video, definitely check out the previous year's success stats before choosing your third year modules ;) As for the the degree class calculation it is fairly straightforward, 2nd year counts as 1/3rd, and the 3rd year and 2/3rds. If you have 85+% it is first class, 70-85% upper second, 55-70% lower second, below that don't even bother as for the weight of each module, 60 credit ones contribute the same as two 30 credit ones. The OU, has a fairly linear (yet discontinuous) grading system, my former university in Germany had a non-linear one (and discontinuous as well), which confused the shit out all English secretaries :p

I'm enrolled in the same degree! Currently taking MST124 and MST125. Is the MST125 exam only multiple choice? I thought it also included some written answers.
@MathyMan
@MathyMan 5 жыл бұрын
MST125, i did this last year. Only section A of the exam is multiple choice, Section B and C are more like TMA questions. This took me by surprise i was expecting it to be the same as MST124. Do loads of past papers. I didnt, and even with 90%+ on all TMAs, because i was unprepared for the exam, I ended up with a Grade 3 pass. Goodluck.
@LuciaMontesEN
@LuciaMontesEN 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, I wasn't ready for that either so I got a Grade 2 Pass - thankfully level 1 modules don't count towards the degree so it's good practice for future exams.

me too! I'm definitely not ready for it yet. I'm going to rely on mock exams and end of unit exercises, I think. I'll also have a look at all previous TMAs and hopefully the exam questions will be similar.

Hi, Lucía. Nice to see you are progressing. I am at my first year of the Physics degree at OU from Spain. How would you compare MST217 AND MST125 to previous modules as S111 and MST124 in terms of difficulty and time dedicated? For S111, I am employing a huge amount of time. Anyone else? Thanks and good luck
@LuciaMontesEN
@LuciaMontesEN 6 жыл бұрын
I found S111 a lot easier than S217, it's more of an introductory course and doesn't involve that many formulas as S217. MST124 and MST125 are quite similar but MST125 is mostly integrals so far, which I'm not really a fan of.
@rubengarcia8527
@rubengarcia8527 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I think it will depend much on each person. I have no problem with integrals. S111 is enjoyable. Good luck with your studies and keep on posting!

Hey can I ask you something ? I’m also taking a level two science course with the open university. How difficult is level two and what are the means of assessments ?
@LuciaMontesEN
@LuciaMontesEN 5 жыл бұрын
I found the mathematics module more difficult than the physics because it feels like it’s not explained properly in many cases, but I like physics more overall. They both have tutor marked assignments monthly (roughly) and a final exam at the end of the year.

Full disclosure I am an American and am very unfamiliar with the UK system. Do you actually have to ever go in person to accomplish this degree? Do you take any classes not related to your degree? For example do you have to take English and History courses? When it’s all said an done how many classes will you have taken when you get your degree? Put another way, how many classes equal 360 credit hours?
@Sproik93
@Sproik93 5 жыл бұрын
Late reply but i'll try. This only applies to Open university, which is the only (?) online uni in the UK. Normal brick unis you attend just like US unis. Open uni is purely online, except for the final exam in each module which is taken at a place near to where you live (open uni organises halls / buildings all over the UK for this). You also attend your graduation in person at one of their HQs. You don't have to take any additional classes related to your degree (that goes for brick unis here as well). Open uni is very similar to brick unis with its modules, its all the same stuff and the same amount of work. For most open uni degrees, if you study for 3 years it's 120 credits per year, which are split into 2 modules worth 60 each, 4 modules worth 30 each or a mixture of the two. For this degree (maths and physics Bsc) Its: Year 1: 1x60 credit physics module, 2x30 credit maths modules Year 2: 1x60 credit physics module, 1x60 maths module Year 3: 2x30 credit physics modules, 2x30 maths modules Totalling 360 credits. 1 Credit = ~10 hours of study time. They expect you to do 3600 hours of studying over the degree.

Some modules do have the option to attend weekly classes in person. I know some of the Philosophy modules have classes. Psychology had virtual classrooms with live chat. Not mandatory though, as you say.

I'm in the same situation as you. I've decided to study S111 alone first. Whilst I'm doing that, I'm using Khan Acadamy (just in case you haven't heard of it, KA is free and provides an insane amount of education. Up to A-Level equivalent I think?) and the GCSE BBC course to get up to scratch on my maths.
