I had to rewind twice to make I was hearing Dungeness crab, Dungeness is a remote headland in Kent South of England, it's claim to fame is a nuclear power station and very good cod fishing in winter if you can stand the cold. A million miles away from sunny California. It's fascinating how places in 'the old country' gave their names to things in the 'new world.'

Hey bro Carolina rig with a 1oz sinker so you can cast a mile and drag the lure from the back of the trough allowing the lure to drop into the bottom of the trough right into the strike zone.
@MrRourk3 жыл бұрын
Max for that rod is 1/4 oz What he needs is some crab flies with 2 tungsten beads on the hook to sink it down. Maybe watch some Mikel Fishtory.

I've been surf fishing the West coast since 1957. My fav tackle is an 11 foot Daiwa light action pole, 10lb. braid, 4 lb. leader, #4 hooks, Carolina rig with 1/2 oz. sliding egg sinker and oil can grubs or sand crabs. I've caught sharks, steelhead, rock fish, perch, a couple dozen striped bass, halibut, and a ton of fish on that rig over the years. Catch anything over 5 lbs. and you'll be there all day. I've tried heavier tackle, but I'm not a meat hunter. if I want to eat fish, I'll buy it from Costco. I've gone to 20 lb. braid and heavier leader when fishing for halibut and stripers, but same pole and reel. That pole has bent over double many times. Spooled quite a few fish before breaking the leader. Pretty cool.

awesome man, thx for sharing. agreed - i think the more i fish, the more i release and realize i'm just there for the fight. i used to have a 9'6" light action lamiglas, but i found i couldn't cast too far in a head wind. don't you find the 11' light poles too whippy? how do you cast carolinas through a head wind? what size rod do you pair with the 11'?

Only time I eat fish is if I happen to catch one that I really like and it isn’t too big but mostly if I think they aren’t going to live I eat them if they look fine which is almost always I put them back

I’m not an expert but I’m sure your interpretation of the rule might be a bit flawed. If you pulled the crab out of the water with a rod and tackle it is an illegal catch. Putting the crab back down on the beach doesn’t change that fact no matter how much time has elapsed. So keeping it is still against the rule because it was caught illegally. Also, I’m sure illegal catches are supposed to be returned and placing it on the beach is not returning it because it’s not where you got it.

what are your thoughts on that okuma reel? I've seen quite a few bad reviews for the retrieve binding up and the bail is stiff when closing using the handle.but others say it's great.just curious as I was looking for another trout set up for the arsenal
@ishwithfish7 жыл бұрын
after using it for awhile, mostly fresh and this one salt vid, i don't think i'd recommend it (i like reels that can survive salt). pros: casts a mile, big drag for it's size, balanced, very stiff. cons: line capacity is low, auto-bail closure is very very stiff (but i think designed this way so prevent premature bait set) so if you like to turn-to-close look elsewhere, the 2000-size cylindrical knob isn't comfortable, tad heavy, and the bearings seized quickly near salt. i got this reel cause it's the fastest 2000 size reel i could find 6.2:1 for whipping UL spoons. it's good for my freshwater needs, but for UL salt again i might look at a sienna or conflict.

how to avoid wind knots? I try out near the beach with my UL rod, seahawk 2000 spinning reel, 6 pounds (lb) braid mainline with 8g jig, casted it out and when I reel in I noticed the wind knots happened to my setup. is it because of strong wind against me..?

@Jonathan-rf5cp5 жыл бұрын
Well its more about the rod than the line really, especially with braided. 8 lb braided has the diameter of 2-4 lb mono iirc. To me UL is lure wts between 1/64 and 1/4. The presso is 1/32 to 1/4 i believe so definitely ultralight, freshwater or saltwater. That being said ive seen people fishing with M to ML rods claiming that theyre doing UL fishing...posers.

Dude, light setups are def way more fun although in Pacifica, the beach is steeper and the waves hit harder and toss your weight around like nothing! What was the surf report for this day? looks fun. Also, what's your favorite surf rig? I've tried fish finder with 2 hooks, but man those things tangle up so badly pretty much every retrieve. I stick to high low now since I'm doing constant retrieval and the weight is on the end, as long as I'm keeping my line tight, it never tangles. Anyway, great video as always. Hope to see you out there sometimes, Cheers!

I would bet it was not the salt but the reel bent pulling against the crab.The braid does not stretch and will bend the drive shaft on smaller reels.I have done the same thing "overstringing" little 2000 reels on noodle rods for salmon and steelhead.Braid is hard on gear.
@ishwithfish7 жыл бұрын
+River rat i dunno man, it was only 8 lb braid and the waves did most of the work bringing it in. i'm guessing an early wave splashed up the rotor and got to a bearing.

I use almost the exact Diawa reel but on a shorter (5’6” or so) and slightly more stout rod. I string them with 20lb power pro and use them as my all-purpose saltwater pole. Caught a 39” redfish on that setup...between the give of the pole and the drag, those Diawa can handle a lot.

fishermen dont have any nationality, they are simply earthmen who fish.

Gee man, why the racist comment? Everybody know You Latinos are the ones responsible for keeping the vast majority of illegal sized fish and keeping fish out of season! In fact, not just the fact that you guys keep illegal fishes but you guys also like to use your casting nets and sane nets to illegally catch fish! The local game wardens here in Maryland put a bounty on you guys' heads since they are tired of catching you guys using illegal methods to catch fish! Me and a few fishermen had talked to this game warden last year who told us he caught three of you Latinos on a boat catching a gigantic cooler full of striped bass using trotlines that were illegally placed in a fish sanctuary area! The fines were in the thousands of dollars he said! In fact, most white people in Maryland hate the sight of Latinos on the water since they are always involved in illegal fishing and fishing without a license and they leave tons of trash everywhere they go! A friend of mine called the game warden on two Latinos a couple of years ago who used a cast net to catch stocked trout! I called on a family of Latinos 4 years ago who kept a bucket full of undersized largemouth bass, crappie, and blue gills. I didn't want to do it but it was too much since that was the fourth times I had seen them doing that and I hated the fact that they threw all kinds of trash into the water and onto the shores! I even pulled several of the used diapers from the water that were thrown by them into the water after they had changed their baby's diapers! This took place in a reservoir that was the drinking water for the Baltimore metro. With Latinos being synonymous with illegal fishing and trashing, you guys shouldn't be crying about others keeping fish, for crying out loud! Also, I'm tired of you Latinos shitting on the walking trails! I have stepped on you guys' poops twice now! If you've got to poop at least do it a few feet away from the damn trails man! I know you've got to poop when you've got to poop, but damn you motherFers are disgusting and have no consideration for others whatsoever!

that loophole is stupid. if an officer asked to see what was in your bucket and saw you only had a hook and line, you would still get slapped with a fine.

+Truman Sharp haha, as i mentioned it's legal to pick them up in the surf if they're keeper size. this is a common harvesting method when in season. no hook or line required, ranger wouldn't know.

8# on a UL is cool but you wanna really call that a UL you need to drop that down to at least 6 OR 4. still cool but m a youtuber so I gotta comment something negative here and there lol. I pearch with 2# test all he time.
@ishwithfish7 жыл бұрын
Owen Thomas haha, naw i ran 8 cause 10-20 lb stripers run these waters. 8 gives me a chance. a local guy caught a 15 lber on 10 test in this area.

Ish With Fish Awesome. I fish UL on the east coast for'em. PB #25 striper on #6 line (in the rocks), and a #17 bluefish on the #6 as well. Not many people get it, but those in the know got it good. Tight lines!

Daniel Drabkin wow, that's awesome. can you recommend a better ul reel for salt? i was thinking a battle ii or conflict.
@steeliedan7 жыл бұрын
Ish With Fish Funny you mention that. my setup for those fish was as follows: Rod: AJN APR 4'10" 1-5 lb UL (discontinued, company still around though) Reel: Penn Conflict 2500 Line: #6 Berkley Fireline (since upgraded to #15 Daiwa J-Braid (cheating, I know, but I'd lost too many 20-30+ lb fish in the rocks) The conflict has served me very well over the last few seasons since it came out. Like all Penns, it's solid as a rock but there's nothing fancy. Don't expect it to stay smooth long under the abuse of going light in the salt. I've dunked it, dropped it in sand, bashed it on rocks, locked down the drag for many fights... And it has plenty of life left in it. I usually stuff it full of marine grease at the end of the season before storage, and service it once or twice during the season if I think I've totally studded it full of sand. No corrosion issues, paint doesn't chip/scratch easily, feels tough. I would recommend it any day, along with the Battle II and Clash of you're looking for an upgrade of the internals. If you don't plan of giving it that kind of abuse, the recent Daiwa BG is very tough and sooo buttery smooth. Can't report on durability yet though. Lots of solid UL reels can be had for $75-150. Have fun!

I use the Daiwa BG 2000 for my UL setup paired with an ugly stik 6'6 UL rod. Check it out, you won't regret it!
