I was laughing so hard at the Walmart bike conversation. 16 years ago my husband decided to start mountain biking with a group of guys that had been biking for years. He went and bought a $120.00 Walmart mountain bike. They took him out to show him some tips for a city race in a week. He raced in his age group and won!! He was so proud, but the bike was literally trash after. He decided to race for a team and bought a new TREK that cost more than our cars, lol. The parts are so easily replaced. He still races and is 63!

I have to say, the best thing I started doing was making Noosa yogurt at home! It has live cultures so you just use it as a starter for your own yogurt. Where I’m at, you can’t actually buy plain anymore so I just buy a single serving and scoop the plain yogurt out around the “filling”. Best ever! It tastes just like Noosa for the price of a bottle of milk. Then just continue to save a bit from each batch. You’ll only have to replace your starter every 6-8 times. Game changer!

I was also traumatized as a kid by the off-brand American cheese slices and super thin packets of lunchmeat. I haven't eaten bologna since high school 30 years ago! My list of things worth the splurge: hiking shoes and tennis shoes/sneakers, chef's knife, pots & pans, vacation activities that create unforgettable memories (though these don't always require money), properly fitting bras.

A GOOD BRA! Especially when you’re a bigger gal with bigger jugs, them bad boys will give you a full on hunchback, shoulder and back pain like crazy!! And I spend a little more on laundry detergent that I like the smell and gets the clothes actually clean rather than the cost of the time and money to rewash the clothes when they just don’t feel/smell CLEAN.

High quality paper towels and toilet paper are a must - you can use less. Also, good quality chocolate - there is a difference in taste and quality. My husband would say high quality tools that will last. I agree with you on shoes and bikes. We have bought high quality bikes used for a fraction of the price.

Enjoyed the laughs this morning. I have to say I agree with all of these items, beyond the sports stuff only because that is nothing I use but I get it. For us it has become a quality of life thing. Solid shoes, good kitchen knives, comfortable bed and bedding. Just makes life a little less stressful and more enjoyable.

John Wooden wasn't just one of the greatest coaches of all time, but was a gentleman and a wonderful human being through and through. He lived in a small town just 25 minutes south of me and my 4th grade teacher was a schoolmate of Mr. Wooden's . . . . so happy to know that he and his socks philosophy made the "splurge" list in a sideways manner !! You 2 are HOOT !!!

My mother always bought one-ply bathroom tissue and then she'd yell at us for going through so much of it when he practically had to use your bare hand! I don't pay the most for bathroom tissue but I do like a good quality two ply!

I totally agree on the Mac computer. I bought my daughter one when she graduated from high school in 2010. She used when she went to college to be a Graphic Designer. She used it for 4 solid years and it is still going! It does need to be replaced but only because the OS is out dated. That was a good investment because she is earning a living at being a Graphic Designer.

I agree with MacBooks being worth it. I'm on my 2nd one now and it's 8 years old, I dropped it so many times all the corners are bent up but it still works great. I bought a new one last year just in case mine totally dies one day but I love it so much I'm just keeping the new one in the box!!

For those that like to bike ride outside a quality bike from an actual bike shop. Not only do I feel you get a better quality bike over one purchased from a big box store, but service after the sale has been spot on from my local bike shop. I am also supporting a local bike shop.

Yes to all of this!! I was a Payless shoes girl for a couple decades and my feet HURT all the time and had so many issues. Now, we all get good shoes and makes such a difference! We bought a new mattress after 17 years...I KNOW!! We splurged and I can't believe we waited this long....got good pillows too. I do splurge on food items like Avocado oil, better breads, oatmilk creamer or non-dairy items....just items that make ME feel better. I am over 40, and certain foods (looking at you cheese/dairy) just don't make me feel as good so I buy particular items when I can!

Agree on most - especially shoes (and insoles). One of my biggest regrets was wearing cheap shoes (with bad/no insoles) most of my life. I walked at least 10 miles a day until my 40s then started having lots of trouble with my feet - have multiple neuromas and had to have physical therapy. I had foot/ankle injuries when I was younger, but nothing that slowed me down this much. Having to limit my main form of exercise (and meditation) added to the middle age weight gain I'm currently battling. I wear good quality walking/hiking shoes and insoles now and am making sure my teen kids have them to. Really enjoy your podcast!

High thread count sheets and down pillows on my really good mattress! Comfortable shoes that last. Butter, not margarine. I agree on Boar's head meats. Good bread. Can't hardly afford to buy good bread these days. You have to make it yourself. I feel the same way about pies, cakes, and cookies. Store bought is just a waste of calories.

I love your ideas...for me, it is a mattress because you cannot replace or put a price on sleep! Health insurance also because you never know and it doesn't have to be world's most expensive plan...I also agree with shoes. One or two good pairs that will last and last and same for some clothing...like a hood coat or jacket. Snow boots etc and when buying pants tops etc in vest in classics that will not go out of style!

I will add a good dependable vehicle if you live in the middle of nowhere. I had a Land Rover Discovery Sport for a year. It handled wonderful for the middle of nowhere and fortunately it had a problem while I was in a city and it went into limp mode, expensive to fix and not convenient if I would have been 90 miles from an auto repair without cell service. Sadly we had to get rid of that vehicle.

I feel the same way about kids guitars as you guys do about kids bikes Stop buying toys!! Granted, if a kid wants to learn guitar, they can learn on $100 guitar it’s not gonna be easy, it’s gonna be very very frustrating. But if you buy a nice used guitar, then your kid takes some lessons and decides they don’t like it, you can resell that guitar for the same price you bought it for.

You two are so funny but Boar's Head Deli meat and cheese is so good. Don't get me wrong HEB can stand head and shoulders with the big boys. But Boar's Head Black Forest ham is so good and with Munster cheese makes the best grill cheese. Try spreading a light coat of real mayonnaise in place of the butter on Sour dough bread. Over the top good. Dave did you miss the Costco Noosa sale last week? I agree shoes and for me good bed sheets. None of that microfiber carp. Bath towels big and fluffy but absorbent. Costco TP. and Blue Bell vanilla bean ice cream.

For me it's shoes, sewing machines, and kitchen knives. Nothing has frustrated me more than cheap versions of those items. We also love speakers in my house. If you have a tuned ear (like we do) then cheap speakers sound awful and are totally distracting. I've had people over who can't tell the difference, but our whole family can tell you the difference between brands of high end speakers, let alone the cheap ones. It's painful to watch movies at other people's houses or in hotel rooms because they sound so awful.
