Great video! Here’s my go-to recipe for an Old Fashioned. 2oz. Wild Turkey 101 1/2oz. Demerara syrup 2 dashes Angostura Bitters 4 dashes Orange Bitters 2 bar-spoons Luxardo Cherry Syrup 1 thin slice of Navel Orange 1 Luxardo Cherry Place block or ball ice into a freezer-chilled rocks glass. Rub orange slice over the rim of the glass and place in the glass. Add 1 Luxardo cherry. Combine all ingredients in a freezer-chilled bar mixing glass filled with cubed ice and stir for 1 minute. Strain into the glass and enjoy.

My favorite maple old fashioned is using Pikesville Rye, with maple syrup, angostura bitters and a cherry with a barspoon of the cherry juice. I add a squeeze of the orange peel and drop the peel in the drink. The higher proof and spiciness of the rye works so well with the maple. Give it a try!

I love Maple syrup and Gran Marnier in an Old Fashioned. Skip the Marachino cherries and get a good Amarena cherry. Filthy and Tochi cherries are very good. My fav is 1.5 oz bourbon, 2 splashes orange bitters, one Amarena cherry and 1/4 tsp of the cherry syrup. My second fav is 1.5 oz bourbon, 1/2 tsp bitters and 1/4 tsp maple syrup. all neat.

Your ratios are pretty much the same as mine. I like to go 3oz whiskey to 0.5oz of simple syrup/maple syrup/honey. I do like to experiment with different types of bitters. The Angostura is my go to, but some of the Fee Bros ones are really nice too (walnut, chocolate, espresso). I tend to use a barspoon of rich.2:1 Demerara in my Old Fashioneds (thought I do have a couple of different crafty maple syrups that I use once and again). Bitters start with a base of 2 Ango, then maybe 3 Orange (I have been using the bartender’s trick version that is 50/50 Regan’s and Fee Brothers) or Fee Brother’s Black Walnut or Aphrodite bitters…like you said, mood-dependent. I am all over the place on what whiskey I use…as often as not, it is a barrel proof pick that hasn’t opened up neat, but is delicious for this purpose, or Evan Williams or Rittenhouse BiB for shelfers. I tend to only use Luxardos in Manhattans now. My hack…I don’t keep oranges around as a rule, so I have a vermouth spritzer with orange baking oil in it…perfect for the aromatics!
@SFguy41511 күн бұрын
I tried your version and liked it very much, so a tip of the hat to you. I also default to the contender here and enjoy that just as much. Both are great and I'm finding it comes down to mood. Simply put, the best old fashioned is the one you enjoy. But if you want a recipe here is my go to. 2.0-2.5 oz of your favorite rye (love Old Foresters or Michter's) 0.5 oz demerara syrup (or 1 demerara cube with 0.25 oz simple syrup) 0.25 oz orange syrup (or 2 dashes of Regan's orange bitters with 0.25 oz simple syrup) 3 dashes angostura bitter If using the demerara cube, add the 0.25 oz simple syrup when you crush it. Add ingredients, stir over ice, strain into rocks glass with a nice cube. Garnish with cherry and candied orange peel. For the candied orange peel, you can make your own but can also buy Collins Orange Twist in syrup (bonus if buying as you can also use the syrup instead of making it). Cheers!

@drgallup11 күн бұрын
Using maple syrup for sweetener to me is way too maple heavy. I use maple bitters occasionally as I like to mix up the bitters. For sweetener and the orange I make candied orange slices. I only have to make it about 4 times a year so I don't consider it much work. You make what ever kind of simple syrup you like, I use turbinado sugar. One cup water, one cup sugar, 2 navel oranges. Bring the water and sugar to a simmer, cut the ends off the oranges then cut them in half down the axis. Cut half round slices a scant 1/4" thick then simmer them in the simple syrup for ~ an hour. Cool and put them in a mason jar with the liquid and refrigerate. Use a scant teaspoon and one slice per old fashion. There are a wide range of bitters available to play around with. I usually use some combination of angostura with maple, cherry, black walnut or sorghum etc. etc. Now if you want to move to next level cocktails start mixing sazeracs.

I like raisin & biscuit Yorkie better than Snickers. Also, I like a Manhattan better than an old fashioned. I think the sugary syrup in the old fashioned puts me off, as I don't like whisky cocktails to be too sweet unless I'm in a particular mood. I might go for a rum old fashioned made with funky Jamaican rum - if I can talk myself into not being lazy (not an easy task), maybe I'll try one of these recipes with Smith & Cross or, better yet, go to a bar and have the bartender do the work, provided that they have a suitable rum. A Manhattan (or Rob Roy if I'm using malt whisky or blended Scotch) with spicy/bitter red vermouth or Barolo Chinato is the ideal whisky cocktail for me.

Just happened across a video where a guy goes around to bars trying and rating their Old Fashioneds. He went to a bar in Louisville called Watch Hill Proper. Supposed to have the biggest selection of American whiskey in the country! Around 2000 bottles! You know of it? It's a bar and restaurant with a well-regarded chef. The reviewer gave Watch Hill a perfect score on the flavor of their house Old Fashioned. They use Old Grand-Dad Bonded, bitters, and demerara syrup. On a side note, this Watch Hill Proper looks like a place you and Erin might enjoy. Prices on the pours seem reasonable. (They only serve American whiskey, whiskey cocktails, and wine. No: beer, vodka, tequila, gin.) Heard an interesting interview with the Watch Hill owners on a channel called Bourbon Lens. One of the owners said, "We have hundreds and hundreds of pours that are $10 or less"! Check out a picture of the interior of the bar/restaurant at that Bourbon Lens video entitled, "Inside the World-Class Whiskey Bar at Watch Hill Proper."

No, as the recipe differs for the amount of base spirit. It’s like cooking. If one recipe calls for 1/2 teaspoon of an ingredient and another calls for 1 teaspoon, we’d follow each respective recipe-especially if people swore by both recipes-rather than altering either (at least if the idea was to compare them rather than to tweak and perfect each recipe).

So the original cocktail was just spirit, bitters, water and sugar. In the late 1800's (the time Jerry Thomas was active) bartenders started making improved cocktails. They were improved by adding Maraschino liqueur, absinthe, orange Curacao (like grand Marnier), or other liqueurs. It became common for customers to ask for a cocktail, but made in the old fashioned way by leaving out the liqueur. That's where we got the name. So basically you made an improved whiskey cocktail. 😂
@stuffandwhiskey11 күн бұрын
True, although we’d have no idea what that was on a menu for most of our lives. We do see a lot of trendy restaurants renaming spins on the Old Fashioned, but we’d personally prefer they put Old Fashioned somewhere in the name so we know the ballpark flavor wheelhouse were within rather than having to guess based on the ingredients.

You’re wrong about Grand Marnier. Grand Marnier is a Cognac from France. Calling it a brandy would be fighting words for a Cognac aficionado. Grand Marnier is the only hard liquor I drink. Unfortunately I’m a victim of the horrible inflation that has happened for the past four years and I fake grand Marnier with brandy, orange zest and sugar. It isn’t quite as good as real grand marnier but it will have to do until I can afford real grand Marnier again. Here’s how I do mine. I put the zest of one orange in E&J brandy and soak the zest for 5 days Strain out the zest and pour the orange flavored brandy on 1/2 cup sugar put lid on tightly and shake well until the sugar dissolves completely. Many like to use a simple syrup instead. I do not like simple syrup for two reasons. 1. Grand Marnier is 80 proof cognac and the sugar and water mix isn’t even close to the strength of real grand Marnier. 2. Almost every single time they use simple syrup the drink appears cloudy. I prefer a clear drink that is as close to real grand Marnier as possible. I might try to get 100 proof brandy to get closer to the strength of real grand Marnier

I’m confused??? If you change the recipe of an old fashion then it’s not an old fashion, if you go to a high end/famous bars they have variations but then they have a different names 🍹

It’s all about interpretation. We felt it was close enough to the classic that it remained within the realm of an Old Fashioned. That’s what the point in the video about my grandmother’s saying was all about. Have had many spins on Old Fashioneds in many restaurants and bars, and personally much prefer they call it a variation of an Old Fashioned rather than an obscure name, but as with anything, to each their own.
