I would never call either of these thin, and I’ve had both in a blind against C923. Certainly not enough to be noticeable. I think both of you (especially Erin), have become absolute proof hounds😂
@stuffandwhiskey9 ай бұрын
Normally we wouldn’t call these thin either if we knew we were drinking them but blinds are brutal. For us, proof drives flavor and finish (in a good way) or heat (in a bad way), but viscosity is altogether different. These were perfect on flavor and had plenty at the proof point which is right within our sweet spot. The lack of viscosity *in relation to how much flavor they had* was a bit of a letdown though. We definitely didn’t make that point well enough in the video.

Have not been able to find an RR13 at anything approaching MSRP, but I was able to find a Disco 11 at just under MSRP, so the whole time I listened to this video, I kept thinking to myself, "please let #2 be the Bardstown!" I still haven't opened the bottle, so I was really excited when #2 was Disco 11. Great show guys! Thanks.

I have a RR 13 batch 5 and a discovery 11. I have blinded both with EH Taylor barrel proof and the Nashville barrel minnick pick. NB was a distant 4. Discover was 3. EH Taylor barrel proof batch 11 was 2 and RR13 was first. The discover is excellent but has a noticeable Jim beam nutty / funky finish.
@stuffandwhiskey8 ай бұрын
That's a great blind! We'd probably agree with that order overall. We've tried a few of the Fred Minnick Nashville Barrel picks, and as big of fans of Nashville Barrel as we are, that's how we've learned that our palates and Fred's palate don't align. We've not personally enjoyed any of the picks he's done with them, while other picks from Nashville Barrel have easily bested bottles like EH Taylor Barrel Proof and Russell's 13 for us. As for Discovery 11 having a Jim Beam nutty profile, the 73% 13 year bourbon in the blend is Wild Turkey and the 21% is Heaven Hill (ECBP), but both of those distilleries and Jim Beam can come across nutty for sure.

Thanks for the feedback. 101 all day every day. 101 rye not so much. Haven't heard any raving review of Russell's in general. Across the board. No one is saying, great value for any of those. So just don't buy them. Stop the hype in it's tracks. We need normal prices on things. Wheat'r for 20$ rebel 100. Amazing value. Try it. Just watched 10 reviews of tequila blinds. It has to be blind for me to then buy it. I hate hype and buyers remorse. Go get Ocho Blanco. You will not be disappointed. Minty, citrus pepper, agave lingering, oily, soothing. Romantic. I'm hyping it ok. feel my vibes. it happens. Blind it and re-think and re-taste. That's what happened here with bourbons that claim to be 120$ but used to be $80. Yet sell for $300+

Got a RR13 for $135, have not cracked it yet. I tend to not get the Disco bottles because there seem to be so many of them and they are all over the place stylistically. Interesting that Disco 11 is 75% 13 year old Turkey. I did not know that, might grab one up. I'm surprised that you thought both of these were thin, I would not expect that from 13 yr old Turkey.
@stuffandwhiskey9 ай бұрын
Same here. We were getting a lot of flavor but the viscosity for the flavor we were getting was thin. That said, we may feel differently on a different day. Blinds are brutal at times.

Was looking for Russels 15 today and saw 13 for $399. Asked dude what would he be charging for the 15 and he said $499. Send the ticks and leeches his way. What the actual hell is going on. Looking for Jack 10’and $249 is the best I have seen. Tried to package deal a Stagg with it for $450 and he passed. Thoughts?
@stuffandwhiskey5 ай бұрын
Sign of the times. It's all in what someone values. Some will spend months of time and hundreds of dollars hunting to get allocated bottles for retail, and those who simply pay the upcharge will certainly save themselves time and maybe even money in the long run, but at the end of the day it's really personal preference. We're not bourbon hunters nor do we tend to pay inflated prices either. Having tried all those bottles you mentioned, the only ones that really merit a premium would be certain batches of Stagg Jr and Russell's 15, but those high prices are still a tough pill to swallow.
@Bourberic5 ай бұрын
At this point I am focusing on the 30 odd bottles I have and a few that I have tried and want a bottle. Luckily, I don’t need to have all the hard to find bottles. Spending some time to taste and evaluate the bottles I have. MSRP in Illinois is not a thing. Need to move I guess lol

It would be cool to see you guys do a blind of Russel's 13 vs 10. Everyone is competitive
@stuffandwhiskey9 ай бұрын
The biggest thing that stands out in blinds for us are wide proof gaps, and 90 proof vs 114.8 proof is a huge delta, so a blind wouldn’t work well. That said, it would be a fun comparison, although we have noticed the quality on Russell’s 10 seems to have slid a bit now that Turkey is releasing older bottlings like the 13 year (but that could’ve just been our last two bottles). If we ever get our hands on a Russell’s 13 at retail we’ll definitely do that comparison on a livestream though and theme it around younger vs older stocks of the same distillate.
@bullseye01129 ай бұрын
@@stuffandwhiskey I totally get that once you get up into the hundreds 90 just feels kind of thin. The price of whiskey is just slow rolling us right now and to be honest I just can't seem to spend over 60 bucks for any bottle. Beers up a dollar or more per six pack etc. At what point do people just stop buying I wonder? I really liked the Maker's Mark cask strength at I believe 54.4 or something like that. It goes head to head with wild turkey rear breed in my opinion but it is $10 to $15 cheaper at 40 bucks.

This has nothing to do with this video. I've had a thought... I've come across some people who say they can, by taste, differentiate between bourbon and Tennessee whisky. I'm no expert on either, but I've tried both, and to me they all taste like bourbon (and indeed, based on all the facts I have, I've concluded that Tennessee whisky is a variety of bourbon, just as high rye and four grain whiskies which conform to the rules of bourbon are varieties of bourbon). It would be interesting to see y'all test that thesis. If y'all could do an episode where you blind taste Tennessee whiskies and regular bourbons of similar proof and price, and see if y'all could tell which was which, that would be mighty interesting. 🙂
@stuffandwhiskey9 ай бұрын
That's a good thought. Let me ponder it. It would need to be a distillery where you could try a whiskey both ways--both bourbon and with the Lincoln county process--and see if you could distinguish the difference.
@WhiskyForBeginners9 ай бұрын
@@stuffandwhiskey I don't know whether there's any distillery which makes some of its whisky with the Lincoln County process, and some without. But you could put George Dickel No. 12 up against Buffalo Trace, for instance. Or you could put a Jack Daniel's bottle against something from Jim Beam (not the black and white labels - I wouldn't want y'all to have to suffer 🙂). Shoot, you could do something really interesting with a three way blind - George Dickel, Jack Daniel's, and George Prichard, and see if the Prichard, which legally is Tennessee whisky even though they don't use the Lincoln County process, is detectable. 🙂
