Cherry Cola is one of my favorite notes in Whiskey. When it is balanced with a bit of tartness like in a wheated bourbon it can be pretty close to ideal. Hope these start becoming more available as I have also preferred high quality Weller to Pappy when I have tried them side to side. Great video.

Great content - some of the best advice I can give is to find stores that offer samples of their store picks. Some, like the OWA here, can absolutely smoke more rare and much more expensive bottles…

Great blind! I've been meaning to set up something like this with my friends, but haven't been willing to open all these bottles yet. Obviously my store pick will be different. I hear the PA state picks aren't always so great. I've enjoyed the Weller 12 and 107 that I have opened and I'm not mad the Special Reserve either. I would be interested if you guys have ever tried Poor Man's Pappy or Prudent Pappy blends yet and how they would compare in this blind. Cheers!

I have a Weller Full Proof pick, and the descriptions of the Antique 107 pick in this video are close to my experience with this Full Proof. The bar where I got the Full Proof also has an Antique 107 pick. I've tried it, and it is very good too. Maybe I should go there and revisit it, as it might be worth picking up that bottle. Their prices are a bit high, but it can be worth paying extra for a top quality store pick, especially when you get to try it first. When I've had standard Antique 107 at the local bars, it seems like it hasn't been up to the standard of the store picks. It's good, but I wouldn't pay extra for it. I like Old Rip when I can find it at a bar that isn't charging way too much, but I strongly doubt I will ever see a bottle for a reasonable price. I think these Weller store picks are the way to go.

“Car-mel” is a place. A small town south of Monterey, CA , where the golf course Pebble Beach is located. Clint Eastwood was the mayor of “Carmel by the Sea” in the late 1980s. He ran for mayor because the town council made him mad over changes he wanted to do to the restaurant he used to own there.

@stuffandwhiskey4 ай бұрын
Knowing those other pours pretty well, Sweet Wheat wouldn’t stand a chance (we’re not fans) and Maker’s 46 CS would be a good addition but would likely fall pretty short of these honestly. And we’re Maker’s fans at least regarding the 46CS and good Maker’s picks.

I have a somewhat skewed view of the Van Winkle line, because I first tried them all at a transitional time: the 23 year old was some of the last genuine Stitzel-Weller distillate and I wish I could afford a bottle; the 15 and 20 had been produced at the Bernheim Distillery and I didn't really like either of them; the 12 year Lot B and the Old Rip 10 were from Buffalo Trace and I have bought bottles of both of them (luckily the Lot B was retail price and the ORVW not too bad secondary). I'd love to see you do a blind comparison of Lot B and Weller 12 (if you haven't already).

I got 1 more Antique 107 single barrel Liquor Barn store pick. I'm saving it for a special occasion or until I can find more. If you haven't tried one, it's worth every penny. I got mine for $64 a bottle. I never pay secondary or way above MSRP for anything. I've drank Bourbon for 30 years and tried it all. I've drank the Stitzle-Weller Pappy's. I've even drank the Old Boone Pappy's. The Pappy's put put today don't taste anything like those. Today's Pappy's are good, but they aren't worth the hunt. They definitely aren't worth the insane secondary prices. Get that 107, you won't be disappointed.

Sort of a novice asking questions but what the heck. I don't know about store picks but you let me know you would have to know the palette of the one doing the pick. OK - got it. The other thing is "secondary markets". Would you say what your go-to secondary markets are, or you wouldn't want to say? It's okay if that is not something to give. Thanks.
@stuffandwhiskey4 ай бұрын
Yep, it’s definitely very helpful to know the palate picking the single barrels you’re buying. That’s very important to us personally. As for secondary markets, we use that as a bit of an all-inclusive term for peer-to-peer transactions. Most are local but some are online, and they’re often an invite-only thing where you have to know someone to get plugged in.

Haven't watched the video yet but I'll say my opinion - Weller. Weller is just far more enjoyable. Now your results may vary because Weller lacks the same oak profile that Pappy tends to carry... but if you know dusty whiskey, and good whiskey maker's, then you know that oak is really a flaw. Modern drinker's have been scammed by KZbinrs into thinking Oak = Good. You don't want oak over taking the profile of a whiskey. Drink some good scotch, dusty whiskey, or good whiskey made by people using better wood. You'll see a common thread, there is good oak and there is bad oak. Good oak adds another layer of sweetness and viscosity to the whiskey. Bad oak is drying, tannic, and crowds out other flavors. One reason current whiskey is so heavily oaked is the desire to build bigger and bigger rickhouses (taller = more heat = more oak influence), a desire to make older TASTING whiskey quicker, and use of cheaper barrel staves. Barrels are expensive and the average age of the wood used is younger and the dry aging is shorter. If you go back 20 years more whiskey used staves aged 24-36 months whereas now they use 12-24. There are also fewer large oaks to harvest. I know a distiller who has tested the impact of barrels on whiskey by using the same tree but different heights of the tree to make staves. The oldest wood in a tree is the best for making whiskey - it adds less tannin and more sweetness. Anyway - Sazerac selects the heavily oaked profiles to become Pappy and the barrels that aren't heading that way tend to be barreled for other labels. Pappy has some of the Sazerac cherry/sweet profile but is assaulted with oak. Weller 107 and FP are just slightly less oaked and better balanced. That's my problem with the oak component in most modern aged whiskey, it's completely imbalanced.
