I owned a woodland mills fixed grinder for several years…. 500 Red Pine stumps removed average 14 inches…. Works great, you kind of get used to looking back… you can grind many stumps and never get off the tractor.

I got the baumer one just like that... speed control is key... i dropped my bucket on the ground inverted... the put tractor in nuetral... used the hydraulics on the bucket to move the tractor back and forth... worked excellent... took out a 24 by 36 inch oak stump 30 to 40 minutes... easy peasy

Brock another great video. I have the Baumalight 1P24 which is basically the same style as the Woodland Mills. I've just posted a couple of videos using it on my channel. The 2 main reasons I bought it had to do with price, of course, but more importantly is the fact that I don't have hydraulic service on the rear of my tractor. You're right about it being a pain in the neck (literally) but as a hobbiest I couldn't justify the expense for going with the more expensive unit.

To save your teeth, you should always have a pickaxe handy and dig out around your stump first. And when you’re grinding as soon as you see a spark lift the grinder and move ahead so you can dig out the rocks - saves your teeth a lot with a little extra time spent in prep work.

As much as I use a stump grinder, I simply cannot justify the cost. I like it better than the Woodland Mills, but just wouldn't sue it enough. After watching this video, my hesitation on pull the trigger has been lifted. Thanks, Brock. 👍

It shouldn't be smoking that much. The teeth are causing the stump to burn from the heat of passing over it and not cutting much. That's when I know I need to change teeth on mine. I own a tree service so I have done a lot of stumps

Great video comparison. I like both styles of grinders BUT the fixed grinder is very difficult to use on slopes. I used one on a steep slope or berm where the stump was right at the peak. Because the tractor is always moving down the slope, you are constantly adjusting the 3 pth while controlling the motion. If you try to grind 90 degrees to the slope then your tractor risks tipping. In the end, I much prefer the stand alone self propelled Toro unit with tracks. It's a smaller unit with the same horsepower but with a big head. It can get almost almost anywhere and is very stable. It all comes down to needs vs. cost

Real interesting video (and timely for me.) One thing - it sounded like as soon as you touched the WG24 to the stump, the Mahindra engine / 16hp PTO was struggling. I'm glad you ran the WG24 on the Deere also, since 16hp is *barely* within the range that Woodland cites.

I think I did mount it on the deere at the end of the video The only other caveat is the owner of the stump grinder misunderstood the instructions on the Woodland Hills and we were grinding from the wrong side of the stump which made it bounce more It did run better on my tractor but the rocks were another problem on this job

I've been wanting a PTO stump grinder, but my only tractors are 80 hp gear shift machines. I'd be worried they'd tear it up easily and be difficult to maneuver with a clutch style transmission. But I bet if I revved up to PTO speed it would send that grinder through anything

I don’t think you wanna fix style, probably be better with a swing style. The one I have is rated for tractors with between 30 and 85 PTO horsepower One size bigger that we all goes from 24 inches up to 34 inches and can run on Tractor’s with over 100 hp With the articulating grinders, you’re not moving the machine so the gearshift shouldn’t cause a problem

Just found your channel. Are used to use those back 20 years ago but when Vermeer and Carlton come out with a real stump grinder I had to get rid of those slow non-productive machines. They’re great for a little landowner or something but they are too slow. Not to mention I broke my PTO shaft off in my 65 hp case about three times. And I do mean broke them off inside the tractor.

They are a pretty good step up from the tractor mounted units but nothing compares two specific built machines like a Vermeer sctx60 or any Carlton equivalent. I do enjoy your channel, always appreciate anybody that throws their stuff out there.

The first stump was a dry eastern red cedar. It doesn't get much softer than that.

For anyone looking for price updates in 2024: The fixed grinders of that size range in price from $1900 (mech max) up to $3800 (baumalight stump blaster) and are rated for a PTO output range of 15-45 HP. The articulated stump grinders range from $4000 (titan attachments) to $8000 (baumalight) and are rated for 20-60 HP at the PTO. The articulated stump grinders also require 3 hydraulic lines to be added to the rear of your tractor, which is an additional $1300 from summit hydraulics. If your tractor is still under warranty you'll be paying a shop about $400 to install that kit. Which means you're really comparing a $2k to $4k stump grinder to a $7k to $10k stump grinder. At $10k you're getting into used dedicated stump grinder prices that are far easier to transport and don't take up much more room than the attachment, and have the same power but usually offer nice features like auto feed. It has been suggested to me by dealers that when buying equipment you should have at least 10% more HP at the PTO than the equipment minimum recommendation just to make sure you aren't over working your tractor and can avoid bogging the engine down constantly. Whether that's a sales gimmick to get you to buy a bigger tractor or not i don't know, but watching that 22 HP Mahindra pull that stump grinder it sounds like it really needed more than the 16 hp at the PTO that it had.

@@RockhillfarmYT I picked up a Mahindra 1640 2 years ago and have been looking at both styles to replace my 16 HP portable stump grinder ever since. That overall price tag of the articulating models is the only reason I can't bring myself to consider one vs a dedicated stump grinder. The fixed grinders seem a little inconvenient in operation but compared to manhandling a portable stump grinder it seems like a big improvement. I do appreciate your video, it was nice seeing them used back to back on the same machine.

If you want to save on teeth soak the ground and dig around 6” down around the stump. This should eliminate about 80% of the rocks but it won’t help what’s imbedded in the stump itself

Yes it’s running at 540 PTO speed but the gearbox on the baumalight grinder has it running at 900 RPMs Where as the fixed mount only turns at the 540

Looks like you are cutting with the leading edge of the blade so it is pushing up on the stump . If you used the back of the blade it would pull down stoping the bounce. Check your manual I have never used one so I know nothing for sure.

It doesn’t have teeth on the back side of the flywheel. You wouldn’t see what you were cutting and would risk a world of trouble for both the grinder and the tractor backing into something you can’t see.

Teeth are about $10 each doesn’t sound bad until you think mine has over 50 of them. Generally the teeth on the center of the disc don’t get used much and I think I’ve never replaced some of those. The ones towards the outside will last through several stumps unless you’re hitting rocks or something else and then they have to be replaced quickly.

Was that an emax 25? My brother in law has one? How'd you like that compared to Deere? Also, baumalight has controls that go with the stump grinder that I've heard make it alot easier to use. Might be kinda hard to use though with your cab. I'd like to get a fixed unit. I have a 1025r and I don't think it has enough HP for the articulating unit.

It was a 22 max Mahendra. Like all the modern tractors, It was capable and you can get work done with it but there were several things I didn’t care for. Number one it has a pinned on bucket rather than a removable bucket. Number 2 the treddle pedal and brake being on one side and having a clutch on the other side was hard for me to get used to. All that said it’s in a much different price range of tractor than mine so I didn’t really want to compare them that way That tractor probably wouldn’t compare very well to your 1025 either. I would say my tractor is about as small as you can go for that unit of stump grinder but yours can definitely run the baumalight 1p24 Or this Woodland Mills

Can you cut backing into the stump?

No. The teeth are on the front side of the flywheel. Also, the Woodland Mills grinder is made to pivot upward if you are trying to cut to fast or you hit a rock. The other issue with going backward is that you can’t see what you’ve pushing into. The cost of the Baumalite shown in this comparison is now 4 times the cost of the Woodland Mills. You’d have to grind a lot of stumps either for yourself or even if being paid to justify the difference in cost.

I actually have a decent chainsaw collection( 6 total). Most of the time I use the Stihl 500i For cutting down stumps. I just didn’t think to bring one with me because the property owner had one

That would probably be a much more capable set up. The 3P24 requires a minimum 30 PTO horsepower which is exactly what my tractor has. I think it would run better on a little bit bigger tractor in the 40-50 pto hp range That said, I’ve ground at least 50 large stumps with it and I get a side income from it

She owns a mobile home park and 185 acres of land here in N.Y. we have around 30 large pines that need to come down in the next couple of months so it's definitely something I'm interested in. Also I have so many other trees around the farm property and in the park it's worth having in the long run. Plus I want to start a business on the side cutting trees so the unit would come in handy for that.

They are carbide teeth so you don’t really sharpen them I can’t say if the fixed units or the articulating units are “better” but I can say that the articulating unit is more fun to operate because you can stand off to the side and watch the head go across the stump instead of trying to guess where you’re at on it. Whether that difference justifies more than double the price is another question I’m done dozens of stamps with the baumalight unit and here is what I’ve learned about these kinds of teeth If there are no rocks in the stump you can do several stumps before worrying about the teeth For stumps like these that are full of rocks there’s nothing you can do about it because you could go through a whole box of $12 teeth on one stump Thanks for watching and for commenting
