Interesting and well done video. I have the 1P24 fixed grinder, and have done a dozen or so large stumps. After a lot of reading and estimating, I am currently charging $3.50 per stump inch including the majority of the root base. For people that insist on an hourly rate that works out to be around $200 per hour.

It’s good to have a rule of thumb like that to estimate with but the problem with charging by the inch is that two 20 inch stumps is not equivalent to one 40 in Stump The 40 inch stump is twice the area and takes twice as long to grind

I remember seeing the others you did. Better cuts than I could do. Lol. Might consider saving the big half piece cuts and repurpose to sell as end table tops. Clean them up and add driftwood legs. Should fetch around 1k give or take several hundred. Shipping is your wildcard. Just a thought since your diversifying and talented enough to do so. Looked like beautiful rustic wood. They're a market for it. Tap into it 💵💲 vs disposing of it.

Looks like you are getting stump grinding down to a fine science. Good call on cutting that stump down first. After a few more jobs together, you will get a better feel for what to charge when you bring a helper that you have to hire.

You say the job took 2 hours and so $300 was a fair fee. Did you account for the time it took to hitch the implement, load the trailer, travel time, gas and trailer/truck wear, unloading, and cleaning? Those are all very real costs and need to be accounted for. If you don't you'll find yourself broke after 10 years, when all the repair/replacement costs catch up with you.

No hourly rate, keep that price in mind though. Factor in what they'd need to rent/ their time/ how much you'd pay for the job. Along with some travel time and such, but never a hourly rate. A stump grinder that can handle that would be around $300, then 2 hours( your rate) along with their want to not do it. It would of probably been around $450-500 for that size around here.

I have a raco mini workforce. It makes me work. Lol But I've gotten good with it. A stump like that would take me 1-2 hrs, including cutting, including loading and unloading. Probably closer to 1.5-2 hours. Your pricing is fine, but a lot of that depends on how deep you are grinding. I typically grind 4-6" below grade, which is usually good enough to grow grass.

Not having a stump grinder I hire someone else. To save money I don't have them clean up the chips and do it myself. After scooping up what I can with the FEL on my 1025R, I use my ECHO Shred 'N' Vac...what a nice job it does - not a chip left.

I do not like the Bauma Lights deflector nor do I like the price. The Landpride which is an Erskine has a much better deflector and uses Greenteeth, which are readily available as well

If you want to fixed Mount stump grinder you can run that on a small tractor like a 25 hp. For this articulating style grinder you normally need 30 PTO horsepower so around 38 tractor horsepower which is what I have. I did a video comparing the fixed mount to the articulating grinder. And of course there are standalone stump grinders but I don’t have personal experience with those

Aside from what Brock said already, Tim of Tractor Time With Tim has both a 1P24 and 3P24. The 1025/1023 can only do the fixed mount 1 series, and your neck will hurt after a while. The larger 2032/2038 can do both but won't shake you as much compared to the 1025. But I'd get the larger tractor just for the 3P24 since your neck won't hurt as bad.

It is a baumalight 3P24 This specific unit will run on any tractor that has at least 30 PTO horsepower and two rear remote hydraulics ports If you don’t have those hydraulics or if you have less PTO horsepower you would need a fixed Mount grinder I have a bunch of videos about this grinder and I also did a video comparing it to a fixed mount unit Thanks for watching

I have the 3P24. I don’t believe they have a 2p24 they do have a 1P24 Which is a fixed unit rather than the articulating version that I have The 24 is the diameter of the cutting wheel The first number either a 1 or a 3, basically represents how many ways you can move it. The 1p is fixed And you drive back-and-forth over the stump. The only other movement is raising and lowering the three-point The 3p24 moves side to side and up and down as well as the three-point movement, And you park the tractor to operate the grinder Hope that helps. The last two numbers are the diameter of the wheel so that 34 inch wheel probably requires quite a bit more horsepower to run Minimum PTO horsepower for this unit is 30 which is what I have. You would have to check with the manufacturer but I’m betting you need already 40 pto hp to run the other one

That’s a slow process for one of those tractor mounts. I run a Vermeer sc60tx. That would’ve taken about 10 minutes. I’ve got probably 3000 hours stump grinding time One of the biggest mistakes you’re making is trying to grind on top of the stump when you discussed the half moon shape you should never be doing that. You start in below ground level and grind into the stump never grind down on top of the stump. About 20 years ago I had one of those tractor mounted kind like that it is extremely hard on that tractor I have broken PTO shaft off inside the tractor before with them.

I always leave them. I follow some Stump grinding groups and that’s what the majority of people do. Some people offer clean up at an additional cost but I’ve never had that request. To me it makes sense to leave them to decompose in the hole unless you’re going to bring in topsoil to fill it in Thanks for watching

You still think your charging enough money? I watched another one of your videos where you wrecked two chains on your saw. Plus you talked about the cost of replacing teeth when you hit rocks. Then you have the unexpected repair cost. Actually, they should be expected. Because they will happen. Don't forget the depreciation for every hour put on your tractor. The dealers will deduct big time on trade in value someday.

I initially started off under charging for everything. Part of that was not factoring in all the expenses. I also didn’t know how to estimate how long each job would take. I’ve been gradually increasing my prices ever since I think my pricing is pretty good right now for our area. You do have to factor in cost of living in your area. it makes a big difference There are only about three or four guys around me that I have seen offering tractor work and they are getting $65-$75 an hour. I’m getting a lot more than that for stump grinding. I figure $25 an hour for me, $40 an hour for the machine, and $10 an hour for consumables I’m generally bidding the job based on that rate and how many hours I think it will take What does tractor work go for in your area?
