This kind of confirms it. Lived in FL most of my life and always knew these were virtually harmless. I really think you'd have to pin one down like that to get stung. I've accidentally destroyed multiple nests before while cleaning and they just fly away. Paper wasps look similar and daubers are often confused for them, and they will sting if you bug them... although they aren't that aggressive either, compared to hornets.

I got stung on the eyelid by one of these as a kid. I found a discarded metal office desk that had been dumped for some reason, in good condition to. I was curious if anything was inside of it...and yep! As soon as I opened a drawer one flew right at me and hit my eye. Reflex saved me and it stung my eyelid. I didn't even feel the sting itself and it took 10 seconds or so to feel any pain at all. I'm sure it only stung me because I broke its nest and it felt trapped in the drawer or something like that. I didn't stick around to investigate and only caught glimpse of it. It wasn't that a bad sting despite the location. I'd rate it lower than yellow jackets or carpenter bees, but worse than sweat bees. My eyelid was swollen for a few hours and after that initial burning subsided in a few minutes, it was more of a dull ache. I've been near tons of daubers and never been stung before that, or since. Carpenter bees are similarly non-aggressive and my sting there (or bite?) was because it got trapped in my shoe. That cause my whole foot to swell up and I couldn't wear my shoe until the next day.

I wouldn't normally ask someone to deliberately take an insect sting but I'm curious I hear the ichneumon wasp has a 4 inch stinger, but what I want to know is, does the size of the stinger make getting stung more painful than the venom yeild?
@winstonpoplin6 ай бұрын
The four inch tube on an Ichneumon is an oviduct used to lay eggs deep within dead trees. They slowly work it down into the wood fibers and lay eggs. It takes time to insert and remove it and if you catch one while it has it inserted it can be bad because they can rip it off in panic.

Fun fact: despite being docile wasps, mud daubers, maybe just one mud dauber, was responsible for a plane crash that killed 189 people. In the Dominican Republic in 1996, a Boeing 757 was sitting unused at an airport for 20 days. The staff neglected to put covers over the pitot tubes, which are used to help measure the airspeed. A mud dauber nest built in one of the tubes during that time blocked the air flow into the tube which caused an erroneously high airspeed reading on one of the airspeed indicators. Thinking they were flying too fast, the captain reduced the engine thrust and caused a stall.
