The issue is that SAS wants the same kind of contract as Pat McAfee. McAfee has a license agreement at 25m a year, whereas, Smith has a "talent" contract. Smith wants to be more than just "talent". He wants to the freedom of McAfee to say and do whatever he wants. The difference is ESPN is paying McAfee production company to broadcast his show. SAS doesn't have a show like that. That's why he started his podcast to try and leverage his position so he can say to ESPN "look I got an audience outside of FT"
