Growing up in Ohio this dude was as big time as it could get... he was unreal!!! I remember when he got injured in college how devastated I was... Now I live in Dallas and work with athletes doing strength and conditioning and my boss told me he used to train Jimmy here and sometimes Jimmy would pick his son ( my friend and co worker ) up from school. Small world. Haha. JJ is a solid dude tho... potential and expectations like he had is why he's considered stunted... Most ppl could only dream of a 14 year career and career average 14/5/3... just couldn't stay healthy. Just imagine how amazing JJ, Mash and Kidd could've been...?? What a baller! I wish u could’ve interviewed Jackson for this! I think his story is more complex than “he just wasn’t a good leader”. For like 15 years, he clearly was one of the best 400 players in the world to keep having a job in the league. And anybody who watched him play KNOWS he could play. The injury definitely derailed him cuz he would’ve been in a much stronger position as the years went on. The man was averaging 26 a game in the hardcore 90’s era. But the league is a place where it’s all about leverage. It doesn’t matter how good you are- if the teams keep making u play certain roles such as “off the bench scorer” than they will keep you there. Nobody can average 30 in 15 minutes of play. But staying in the league for 10+ years on 10+ teams shows that the man could play & they couldn’t deny him. He was always in shape, never backed down from anyone, & was never punked. He was looked at as a young star before the injury and all the mess in Dallas. Then it was like a cloud was over his head and teams wouldn’t give him the keys in the driver seat. But he stayed in the league & always looked like a real player out there.

Amen man! I was and still am a die-hard Blazers fan, and that team was phenomenal. Sure it didn't have a bunch of all-stars or anything, but the '99 team was definitely one of the deepest teams in league history, with a slew of really good players. With Damon at point, prime Isaiah Rider at 2, Walt Williams at SF, prime Rasheed Wallace at PF, and Sabonis at Center. Then the bench you had Brian Grant at PF (who also started a bunch as well, with Sheed sliding down to play SF and Walt going to the bench as the sixth man), then Jimmy at SG/SF who also played some Point-Guard, Stacy Augmon at SF, a young Jermain O'Neal, the great pass-first ball-hawk Greg Anthony at PG, the big bruiser Cato at Center, and lastly a recently rafted Bonzi Wells. To this day, even with Rider being an asshole off the court - there is no way they should have traded both Rider AND Jimmy Jackson for an over-the-hill Steve Smith! Hell, even a prime Smith wouldn't have been worth it, (unless it was a straight one for one, Rider for Smith, just not for both Rider and Jackson! Both rider and Jackson were infinitely more versatile, whether it being in scoring or the fact they were both better defenders to boot! To this day that trade is considered to be one of the worst trades in Hawks history, but imo it was far worse for Portland. Rider eventually self-destructed a couple years into his stint with the Hawks, but that might not have happened if he had stayed in Portland, and the fact is - Smith was meh at Portland, he was never a great slasher to begin with, but by the time we got him he was even more immobile and one-dimensional, and though he became a really good passer and developed a decent post game was well, both though weren't as good as Jimmy's were - to along with the fact he was a horrific defender. Then of course just a year or two after getting him we ended up trading him for Derrick Anderson, which was a phenomenal trade - if it wasn't for the fact Anderson was so damn injury prone. We were so close to becoming something great, with Rider finally getting used to playing with so many other scorers and becoming significantly more unselfish offensively, Sheed blossoming into an unstoppable force in the post and the most well-rounded and versatile PF in the entire league, Sabonis equally as dominant with an even better outside shot to go with having the best passing skills i"ve ever seen in a Center, Walt Williams being one of the most underrated and sadly - underutilized scorers of the mid to late 90's at SF, Augmon being a great slasher and post game while still being one of the top 5 on-ball defenders at the wing in the league, Brian Grant being a dominant post scorer and one of the best rebounders at the time, Damon starting to become a much better passer while getting used to playing with so many other scorers, and finally Jimmy being the glue guy who did it all - we truly had become a great team! I would have loved if we at least gave it one more year before blowing everything up like that. We did of course get back to the conference finals with Pippen and Smith, but because both were so old, there was really only a 2 year or so period where we were real contenders, while also in those years not being nearly as deep because we traded so many guys for only two washed-up former all-stars. If we had kept Rider, Jackson, Walt Williams, Greg Anthony, and Cato we would have remained a significantly deeper team that also would have remained contenders for a minimum of 2 or so years longer than we did. Sorry for the rant man

Okay stop the presses this is my favorite one yet! I was thinking about JJ just yesterday. How he held out til friggan March (Jon Barry and Doug Christie also had long holdouts from this draft), and the Mavs were on pace to break the record for most losses ever , but this rookie helped them win enough to avoid that distinction and finish with ELEVEN wins. He was still a real nice role player even as a journeyman, all the way up to his time in Phoenix. I always wondered why he fell off so drastically. That 1992 draft is still my favorite all time. Only two true greats but the depth of quality players is staggering. Harold Miner is the only lottery bust, and you don't find another true bust out til Randy Woods fron LaSalle. A ton of great role players and stunted stars (Walt Williams, Todd Day, Laphonso Ellis, Clarence Weatherspoon, Oliver Miller, etc etc) JC, we need a Lloyd Daniels video!! I knew about the whole Toni Braxton drama but as much as I follow/love hoop, I never knew it was his negative "jacket" that led to him playing for so many teams. The unfortunate thing about him, Jamal and Jason never working out is that stars drafted into what could ultimately be super-teams STILL cannot learn from this experience, put aside their attitudes/immaturity and chase that ring. Russ, Harden, and KD were an updated version of this trio. Three former MVP's and future HOF'ers also couldn't make it work for damn near the same reasons, when they could've put it all together and had 1-2 chips before leaving OKC...Great story brotha.

JJ definitely had the it factor in being a solid NBA player. Based on what I remember in watching him, I think the injuries played a bigger role than meets the eye. Secondly, I feel that management and coaches often have an expectation of leading scorers to automatically be leaders period. Leading in stats does not always translate to being "the main guy" in the locker room. From a subjective standpoint, should he have been a better leader? Perhaps. But sometimes team dynamics and mixing up various personalities and egos make it challenging for any leader or potential one. The Dallas team should have definitely made way more noise than they did. Both JJ and Mash were scoring and rebounding machines and no one was nicer with the assists than J Kidd...

Not long ago I was listening to an NBA game while doing chores and the analyst was making great points and he had a lot of charismatic energy behind the microphone. I always wondered why a player with the skill set of Jim Jackson became a journeyman and the his lack of maturity as you illustrated shows why. Like you said, once a player gets a certain reputation it's hard to shake. See Dwight Howard.

Drafting of Jackson, Kidd, and Mashburn was equivalent to what Thunder did drafting their big 3 of KD, RW, and Harden 3 consecutive years. Only difference was that Thunder big 3 lived up to their potential and dominate the league unlike the Mavs where Kidd became a superstar and Mashburn became a very good player. But potential wise, they had very big expectations in Dallas in the 90's.
