About Spectre Sound Studios:
I'm Glenn Fricker, engineer here at Spectre Sound Studios. I love making records, and after doing it for sixteen years, I want to pass on what I've learned. On my channel you can find tutorials on how to record guitar, bass, real drums and vocals. There's reviews and demos of tube amps, amp sims, drums, mics, preamps, outboard gear, Electric Guitar, Bass Guitar, and plugin effects.
We've covered Moon on the Water, played Bias FX, given you the absolute best in Stupid Musician Texts, ranted & raved about bass guitar, and this channel is where The Eagle has Landed.
Everything you've wanted to learn about recording Hard Rock & Heavy Metal can be found right here on this channel!
I also respond to your comments & questions: The best make it into the SMG Viewer's Comments series of videos. Loads of fun, lots of laughs.

there´s a pretty simple procedure to force musicians to pay up. first of all, always get a deposit before even starting to work on a mix. then, put little 1 second mute gaps in the mix every 30 seconds or so. that way they can´t use it without paying the final payment first. lastly, only send the final mix without the mute gaps after they payed the rest. no money, no mixes, no compromise. i´ve never had any trouble with this procedure.

HA HAA! Excellent. Although, rather than simply puttin' muted gaps in the mix, I'd replace that with an overly loud *"DEMO VERSION!!!"* about every three-to-four seconds.

Well aren't you special, taking Jong-Un at his word... The only part of the US that's within range of that missile system is Alaska. Maybe you're unaware, but Kim Jong-Un has a nasty habit of bold-faced lying about pretty much anything. According to him, his mother was a unicorn, he never eats or shits, and he invented the hamburger. I suppose you believe that too? I mean, come on, dumbfuck! He's not even a good liar, and yet you still fell for it. Sorry to say, but if you're that dumb, you're destined to get fucked over alot in life. On that note, I have some bonds that are *guaranteed* to make 3000% returns. All I need is your bank account number and PIN. You interested? lmao
@Duke_Silver
@Duke_Silver 7 жыл бұрын
Maybe I should put a disclaimer for less intelligent people, like INF1D3L010 : "But the last missile test wasn`t a failure" - true, all the news (at least the ones that I read) were reporting it as a successful test "he announced recently that all of US is now in range of the North Korean missiles." - true, that is what he said I never said I believe him, everyone knows that he`s exaggerating.

The edge is strong with this one... Do you honestly think throwing insults at me is going to make you look any less idiotic? 4:20 this reminds me of this time that a guy who I met one time. He claimed to have been playing 10 years. I was tuning his guitar (sigh) and couldn't help but notice that the strings were strung (according to me and pretty much every guitarist that has changed his or her strings before) wrong. Props to him for putting them on the right pegs, but they weren't strung to where you twist counter clockwise to tighten and clockwise to loosen. They were backwards. I was definitely impressed. I guess you aren't required to do it the way most do, but it still got on my nerves.

Sometimes things are learnt through the hard way. 5 or 6 years ago I went to the local guitar shop, because my bass needed to be restrung. The tech yelled at me something like "it's so easy to restring a bass, you should do it by yourself!". In the middle of the shop. With the other customers watching at me. How embarassing. But, in the end, I learned how to restring a bass and I never had a tech doing it for me again. Oh, I change strings more or less one time at year by the way. So, fellow bass players, do yourself a favor: don't be a living joke. Change your strings and learn how to do it properly. BASS IS LIF, after all.

Hey Glenn I'm a high school student and I always wanted to learn to play an instrument. I started to get very interested in the sound and style of the bass, and in the different techniques, and I'm planning to buy one (cheap, of course, I'm a broke teen) and learn. Holy shit. 8:41 That's the singer for my band Korrosive! He NEVER cups the mic. In fact, at practice, the mic stays on the stand with his hands in his pocket. He explained this picture to me as a one-off where he held the mic 'like a wine glass' for a couple seconds during a song, and some journalist put it in a review and kinda dragged him for holding the mic like in the picture. Really shows how one moment out of context and send the wrong message. I have video proof of his proper mic technique.

IMO, countdown to extinction, rust in peace, and dystopia are Megadeth's greatest albums with Endgame being close up there too. And mustaine was sober for all of those. But I do realize many consider peace sells to be their best efforts. I don't agree. But yes. He was most definitely on heroine during that whole record.

If you aren't willing to put the work in to raise the funds, you'll be shit in the studio anyway.

Glenn you're getting something very wrong, I love you and you're a smart dude, but Dave Mustaine's best material did not come when he was on heroin. Killing is my Business, Peace Sells, and So Far So Good So What were all speedball babies, but those aren't exactly his greatest records. They're good no doubt, and Peace sells is in many senses a masterpiece, but in 1989 when Nick Menza and Marty Friedman joined the band Dave had just been through intense rehab and a 15 consecutive clean months ensued. What did Mustaine write and record during that time? That's god damn right. Rust in Fucking Peace. One of the greatest albums ever to grace this earth. And Youthanasia was written largely drug free as well. It was recorded while Dave struggled but written before. Ellefson, Friedman, Menza and Mustaine were all totally clean the entirety of 1989-1990 once all members of the legendary lineup had joined. Also, Mustaine might not be someone who's footsteps to follow in in terms of his decisions, but if someone wants to call him their idol what's preventing them from doing that? Dave has written and recorded some of the best metal songs/albums in history, been active in politics whether you agree with him politically or not, made Metallica what they are today, made his own band almost as famous and successful despite being kicked out of the band he made, started a beautiful family of musicians and business minds, owns his own vineyards, produces Megadeth Beer which I've heard is actually really good unlike the Maiden beer, has multiple signature series, has given foothold to many younger and upcoming bands (i.e: Lacuna Coil, Havok, etc.) and overall is the lifetime acheivement award equivalent of a metal musician. His career is still rolling and he's far from burning out, he's still going out there, playing, giving back to the community, etc. Sometimes he may be a dick, but he's had a lot of people be dicks to him in all fairness. So in Dave's defense, FUCK YOU GLENN!!

I can back what the people are telling the Joey in the ear protection clip. I was subjected to something called the “Gates of Hades” which are sounds that are supposed to ‘induce nightmares’ when you sleep. The problem is that the people who subjected me to it used noise-cancelling Beats headphones at FULL BLAST, which is 115 dB. Hearing damage at that level starts at just THIRTY seconds of exposure and I had to endure thirty MINUTES of it. I did that 6 months ago and I still have tinnitus in both of my ears from it, and I’m starting to get convinced that I’m going to hear these ‘voices’ in my head for the rest of my life. For anyone wondering (like anyone is going to read this), I did the ‘Gates of Hades’ thing because the people who lived on my floor thought it was real and I thought it was bullshit.

Why has this become a "thing" now ?... That so many of these studios are releasing mixes to clients without getting paid in full? This is a no-brainer to running a recording business. I never - nor did any other studio I know - ever release final mixes to ANY client without being paid in full for the time spent. If you get paid in full, you won't have to go after a client to get your money, spending countless hours chasing down dead beats who probably won't ever pay you, anyway. ALWAYS take deposits ( non refundable!) for ANY sessions booked. ALWAYS get paid at the end of every session, keeping the balance current at $0. And, if for some reason you don't do those very basic " business 101" things, never EVER release any finished product until. you. get. paid. And if you don't do these things, you have no right to bitch about it when you get hosed. People will only take you as seriously as you take yourself. If you allow people to walk on you, they absolutely will.

I just started my company but were about to debut (and change the bass tone game for all effing eternity!) " pre aged" bass strings. So that even new bassists can get that "3 years going- never changed the strings" MASSIVE, SHARP TONE! And all the in the know bassists will flock to these so they never have to deal with the dead "pop"and anoyying "rattle" of EVERY OTHER new manufactued not broken in string. Bass tone ages as the string is both played,polishing down rough edges, absorbing salts, moisture, and oils from your fingers, is naturaly exposed to the changes in climate.i through years of r &d have come up with a sustainable, eco friendly, way to atrificilly produce this aging process and sell,( in batches for now mind you) strings that produce the Truly impressive thud! That only comes from a natrually well played bass strings. I offer a variety of gauges , flat wound, tape and rounds,in 9 different vintages.ranging from right as the strings have " cooled down" and. Have lost All but the last of their Sharp raspy- ness of new stings. These are called "pawn shop hangers" to matching years of hard playing followed by untold "evironental" aging. These we call " closet queens" mimicking the tone close to my heart.in my early teens i was introduced to bass at a friends neighbors house, his dad was in a touring band back in the day. But had since grown up and gotten a real job. These mimick what that gibson ripper sounded like when i first pulled it out of that case many years ago.

Hey Glenn I hope you can answer bis question as you've probably seen hundreds to bands in your life. Do some people just have "it" when it comes to musical success? It seems like many great players just have an innate ability to learn and play their instrument fluidly and quickly. People like James Hetield, Dan Donegan, Dave Mustaine, Yngwie Malmsteen, etc. It just seems like these guys just have "it"? Do you need that to go far in music? It's like being an Olympic-level athlete, some people have "it" and some don't. Thanks.

I get the joke, but your shirt is making generalizations which I don't find to be that funny in my opinion. I've played drums for a long time, I've worked hard, and I comfortably deviate from 4/4 time often, and I could be "your drummer"- that could be anyone. You've just probably worked with a lot of young people in shitty bands that make terrible music. You wouldn't be complaining if you were working with professional musicians who play real music. If you're working with armature bands who's drummers can't count to 4, then aren't you wasting your own time and money? You are arrogant and smug but I'm sure you're good at what you do, and I did very much enjoy that spider web restringing job.

Ok Glenn, I think you need to know this. I have been recording bands...and rap...for years. Never anything ground breaking but, it actually paid a few bills every now and then. There were always problems with mic cuppers and mic lickers. To fix this I thought, I would just put a piece of tape on the floor and make them "hit their marks". This idea failed worse than Lulu. So I came up with what I called, the "pacifier". Just like a plastic nipple it served no other purpose than to pacify the half prepared fux that showed up late. However, It DID work. The concept is simple, get the "performer" in front of a hot mic, but make them stand back and hold a mic that was plugged into nothing. Cup it or lick it all you want, you still sound like shit because you did not practice.....your thoughts?

Hey Glenn, I was wondering if I should get a focusrite Scarlett 2i2 or 2i4. I'm just a bedroom musician who's looking to record metal/rock music. I'll be using a bass and guitar. If you see this, please respond. Thanks, keep up the good work

I refuse to play music with people who aren't wearing hearing protection. No amp goes on without ear plugs in - and if you aren't gonna use them you aren't gonna be playing. I've got light tinnitus compared to some but it affects me enough to be grateful I was TOLD to wearing hearing protection when I started college. If I hadn't I'm 100% sure my ears would be 100% fucked right now. Even typing this message there's that constant high pitch singing in my ear... We aren't lucky enough to have a 'cure' for tinnitus, or to magically replace ear drums like we can old folks hips and knees. Don't fuck around.

The hearing loss thing,...that shit is real. I carry earplugs with me EVERYWHERE in case I need them. Sometimes I need them if I'm on stage. I find that to not be the case most of the time probably because I'm not a hard rock/metal player. Usually the time when I need them is when I'm out in the audience and I get the entire mix AND the stage volume coming straight at me. Now having said that,...what this idiot doesn't understand is that Dave Mustaine has probably been using in-ear monitors since they first became available because he can afford to. And that's the REAL reason he doesn't wear earplugs.

I have 2 sets of bass strings in my strings drawer at all times. When I restring (which SHOULD be done when needed...don't boil your strings) I order a new set so I have 2 full sets on the ready...ugh.

I'm gonna have to echo the message to wear ear plugs of some kind. I used to practice in a tiny room with my head right next to a crash symbol and our drummer was pretty powerful. I also >>used

Hey Glenn, can you give us some tips on building up a portfolio? I'm more of an artist myself, but my main problem is the lack of presentable works. I even have a plan to separate my hentai from the more presentable stuff, as many people and companies object them, especially the unusual stuff (those are more fun to draw). I'm currently trying a "drawing without thinking much what I want to draw" approach, making some logos for non-existing bands, etc. At software development, it got a lot worse as a lot of companies wants us to leave out non-commercial stuff like free and open-source stuff and internships (and I even got fucked over in an internship, because my boss wanted me to work for free to him, and I currently cannot afford free work as my PC now barely works and I still have a lot of unpaid college fees).
