Best thing I've ever seen. The mic manufacturers begging vocalists not to cup the mic. What more evidence should there be
@PJBonoVox6 жыл бұрын
BSTFOREVR567 People take this shit too literally and can't use common sense or their own judgement. He's not saying *never* cup the mic, just not for entire sections of a song. If you want to do it for that one cliched growl before the breakdown, go nuts. But don't expect that anyone will be able to hear what the fuck you just said.
@NolanVoid6 жыл бұрын
Phil Underhill You do realize that one of the MOST prominent side effects of cupping a mic are right? It would be the massive amounts of feedback caused by some douche who A. Can't wrap his head around proper mic technique or B. His balls haven't dropped so he uses it as a crutch to make himself sound more brutal. Or C. Both.
@NolanVoid6 жыл бұрын
Steve Stockmal That's all well and good, but if the person cupping the mic has one of those you'll STILL get the side effect of that horrendous feedback while it's on and being cupped.

Hey Glenn, you should try and record a song where every track is recorded using improper techniques such as singers cupping the mic, drummers not using a metronome or setting their levels correctly, guitarists cutting mids and using distortion pedal on their high gain channel, and letting bass players off their leashes, and then record the same track properly to show how much of a difference it actually makes. Hopefully it will help people who are just starting out in music/recording learn proper techniques and prevent them from developing these bad habits.
@NolanVoid6 жыл бұрын
Ryan Doli That might be one if THE most brilliant things I've heard in a LONG time. But fir posterity, record the SAME song with proper techniques and use it say you can A/B the tracks to show the difference. I'd go so far as having a crappy audio engineer who thinks he's bad ass record the improper technique track. That way you can hear JUST how bad things can REALLY be.
@HowardTheDork6 жыл бұрын

Throwing the last question (cupping the mic) at a Shure representative was the best part!!! I knew from self recording experience, that cupping the mic sounded bad, but your videos inspired me to spread the word. In fact the other day at the rehearsals , I saw a friend of mine cupping the mic and asked him, not to do that and showed him how to hold it and he thanked me cause nobody ever explained it to him. Apparently the sound engineer overheard that conversation and he thanked me as well !?! So... Boys and Girls, please spread the word!! It's not just Glenn who suffers!!

Glen, you’ll probably appreciate this. Earlier today, I was at a Battle of the Bands sound check. One of the other singers was cupping the mic. Needless to say, it sounded terrible. Every time he opened his mouth, feedback screamed all over the place. The sound people there didn’t know a thing and kept trying to turn him down, but to no avail. Then, I shout from across the room “Stop cupping the mic,” he moves the grills away from his hand, and, lo and behold, everything was fixed and he sounded pretty good. The moral of the story: “DON’T CUP THE MIC!” P.S. I play bass in the band I’m in for that show. Love your stuff, man! Keep it up!

Something that a lot of people don't realize is that many producers have a "quick mix" setup that they will cut with your original demo for comparison so you have an idea of what their mixing and mastering style will sound like with YOUR songs and it can really help to know if that is the person that you want to work with or if you want to keep looking.

There's a large number of vegans in the metal scene (e.g. Arch Enemy), and even I would reduce my meat intake if it wasn't for my current financial status and my country's obsession with meat, not to mention those fucking rabid vegans who only can think from their relatively privileged positions and spread pseudoscience to demonize meat. I know that animal farming at the current level is unsustainable and harmful to the environment (which also caused issues on the tonewood market due to deforestation in South America by fire), but I also know that those cows and pigs getting liberated won't become "companion animals" (PC word for pet used by PETA-esque vegans), and I don't want to convert natural predators to plant-based diets. I think whoever put out that ad is just stupid and doesn't know how rock/metal works. Yes, there are a few bands that are already vegan or have some other political opinions on the whole spectrum of the politics (including a few bands that were called "too-PC" back then by others back then, I heard Dead Kennedys wasn't liked for their "Nazi Punks Fuck Off" song). However the reason why a lot of young people are listening to their parents' favorites is a deep rooted issue, that stems from how companies threat art in general and how they're unwilling to try new things which ends up them pushing older well established artists, lack of experimentation with new sounds (remember the short boom of nu metal and djent?), and that social media is oversaturated with all sorts of thing, etc. The oversaturation is a huge issue, since to produce any kind of art you only need the tools, talent is purely optional. From what I heard, it's even worse books/literature, since you only need to be able to write, that's also why there's so much garbage on the fan-fiction front.
@TheSolfilm6 жыл бұрын
The grindcore scene is FUUUUULL of vegans as well as the Crust Punk scene and in the extreme metal scene also so.... the problem here is that "rock" is not compatible with "metal". Either it's rock or it's metal. It's like saying "I want a motorcycle with a roof, four wheels and extra seats for pasasengers, some extra space for the luggages and I want all that closed".

Hey live engineers! Tired of singers cupping the mic at your venue? Well, I have the solution for you! Introducing the Talkback Mic. How does it work? Press the button on your console, and watch as your voice is projected to the entire venue. Say the magic words "STOP CUPPING THE MIC!" and watch as the singer turns red with anger and embarrassment. Tack on the word "dumbass" for extra flavor (also, you'll probably get fired)! Order your Talkback today and receive a free, yes FREE, lifetime supply of zero fucks to give. BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE!!! Order in the next 10 minutes and get a free slingshot! It's perfect for breaking that mirror the lead guitarist always carries. It also works for bass players. Make them chase the shiny.

We Were Machines Don't own either a BC Rich or the Line 6 guitar, but I have tried both in a store and to be fair, they are pretty good for the money. (The BC Rich was a red bolt-on mocking bird ~300€) It seems it is more about beginners not knowing how to set up beginner level guitars and complaining how bad they are than actually the guitars being bad.
@SoundGuyZackProd6 жыл бұрын
At one time BC Rich was the way to go. They're no where near as bad as Silvertones or peavy guitars (note I've only worked with 2 peavy guitars). But with companies like LTD there is jest better built quality there. Here's a tip for complaining drummers, next time you set up your kit for rehearsal: 1.) set up your drums (toms, kick and snare) 2.) Install your drum mics on your toms, snare and kick (depending on the technique your using) 3.) Install your cymbals and cymbals stands after 4.) Adjust accordingly and add the rest of the mics if you want to You end up getting used to the space/height needed to perform with microphones regularly, also really helps to learn ''ignoring them''. I'm not a professional or anything, but when I started and my kit was miced, for some reason they kind of always felt uncomfortable because I felt like I had to be really careful not to hit them. Which obviously caused me additional stress during a performance. Since then, I just leave them on, they aren't even plugged half the time and it really helped me gain more confidence in where I hit and learn the best way to set up my kit to house microphones. If you don't have a mic kit, I guess just use anything that has a similar width and length to an SM57 to do your measurements.

I hope metal goes back to when bands in the same genre would different. Unlike today where the majority of bands in the same genre sound the same. Like the big 4 for example, they are all thrash metal basically (in the 80s anyways) and they all have their own sound. Most bands don't have that today, well from what I have heard anyway. I know there's loads of bands out there, just it would be good if the better ones got more attention.
@digitaldeathsquid34486 жыл бұрын
I'm fairly certain there were a ton of "clone bands" even back in the 80s. Look at how many glam metal bands pined after Van Halen's sound and see how many actually managed to pull it off. For every Motley Crue, there is at least one Zebra

After few moments they take out the brain completely, suddenly the man dropes the wooden thing, comes to the front of the stage, grabbing the microphone and says: cut down 2k and give me more level! P. S. I'm a live sound engineer. Best regards from Israel

“Doesn’t mean we’ll be in poverty. God will provide for us.” Anyone who has payed attention during Mass or church would know that Jesus never promised prosperity for his followers. It’s okay to work for God and make money while you do it. This is just what I’m thinking. I’m not trying to offend anyone, that’s Attila’s job.

When I was an actively gigging drummer, I never got to say where and how my drums got set up. It was always set up last, and usually cramped. Complaining wasn't going to move that wall, so I learned very quickly to get over it.

Trever Wiebenga no... I'm protestant Christian, and my personal belief is to let people live the way they want as long as it's not harming others.

joseph smith That text from the Christian death metal band is just insane. IF you believe that God will provide for you then you must also believe that he might actually want you to make a living with your "ministry" I understand the concept of remaining on your idealistic high horse, but dude....you have to have money to live so you have 2 choices, 1:find a way to make a living with your ministry (running it like a company, having quality merch to sell, bringing in a decent amount of fans to your show so you can actually get paid.) OR 2. Run your ministry finance free and eke out a living doing that and flipping burgers at Burger King.
@josephsmith80876 жыл бұрын
Nolan Void I'm all for these guys going non profit, but God does not provide financially, so that makes it very hard for someone to run something like a band, especially when you need to have instruments and mixing.
@NolanVoid6 жыл бұрын
joseph smith My point exactly. But it doesn't SOUND like they're trying to go non profit, it sounds lime they are shooting themselves in the foot idealistically. As long as money ISN'T the driving focus of why they do what they do, then having the ministry be a financially viable entity should not cause a conflict of interest. That being said, a rare few death metal bands (if any) make an actual living off their music. Add the Christian element to it and chances of making a living drop drastically.

the vegan band was a cool idea. They said the main point was to play locally and raise awareness of why veganism can save the planet, not necessarily succeed in the traditional music industry. They also said they were aiming for ellen because she is a big supporter of their cause and would do a good job of disseminating the message. There is not one path to success. also I know a lot of people's parents WOULD be pissed off if their kids were listening to vegan metal. The US has been forcing big agriculture propaganda down our throats for decades. "were americans, we eat beef" etc etc. puke.

Glen the creators of the SM7 obviously don’t understand its true sonic potential. Cupping the mic is the best way to sound brootal when you’re playing the metals! 🤟🏽🤟🏽

TheDirtymexican0 No it isn't. Whatever sound you want a foot pedal can do it better than cupping this mike.

Like you've said in your previous videos, there are effects you get by cupping, but if the effect is happening the entire time, it ruins it. You might as well just add a shitty post EQ if you're cupping the entire time. That being said, Glenn, you should check out how deathcore vocalists use mic technique and how their engineers get good sounds out of it.

Glen, you are awesome and hilarious!!!! By the way I'm a bassist, a real bassist so I'm never offended when you joke amateur hacks. PS. While playing a show in Fayetteville NC, the opening act contacted us about sharing gear. We told them to bring their heads and they could use our cabs. Well, they call me to the stage, something's wrong with your bass cab (ampeng 8x10). Well, their pathetic excuss for a "bass player",let alone a human, plugged his fucken bass straight into the cab and didn't understand why he couldn't hear anything.

“The greatest studio musicians in the the world never complain.” Replace ‘studio musicians’ with literally anything else and this fact will still hold true. Being professional leaves no room for whining or bitching because if you’re truly good at what you do you can overcome minor changes in your working environment and still kick ass.
@johnstitt26156 жыл бұрын
Dear Glenn, you are a great man. Truly. Putting up with people that I would personally swat shows great character. I’m now going to work on my music in my home studio(man cave), send the tracks to my mixing engineer, pay him, then have another song mastered by my mastering engineering engineer, and pay him......yes the order of things......you work, you get paid....gas tanks don’t fill themselves for free, etc 👍

Cupping the mic can be a legitimate technique. Just last night I was on Discord and one of my friends was talking shit out of his ass so I cupped the mic to legitimately make a mockery of him because it sounded like I was talking out of my asshole.

Been to Windsor many times. Excellent place for food, especially if you’re used to the usual American food since everything in Windsor is locally grown. Also, hate long waits on urgent health care? Cross the river to Detroit! As a drummer I’ve gone out of my way to get mics for my drums for recording, but also to get used to playing with mics set up on my kit. That way I find the most ergonomic playing, and also work on not hitting the mics themselves.
@learguitarist6 жыл бұрын
I'd submit couple screenshots but they're in spanish. We kicked our drummer out of the band, we are recording an EP and the drummer thought it was a good idea to say "send me the MIDIs so I can study" the very same day he was meant to record, it's worth mentioning that those are songs we've been rehearsing every weekend for the last 4 years.
