About Spectre Sound Studios:
I'm Glenn Fricker, engineer here at Spectre Sound Studios. I love making records, and after doing it for sixteen years, I want to pass on what I've learned. On my channel you can find tutorials on how to record guitar, bass, real drums and vocals. There's reviews and demos of tube amps, amp sims, drums, mics, preamps, outboard gear, Electric Guitar, Bass Guitar, and plugin effects.
We've covered Moon on the Water, played Bias FX, given you the absolute best in Stupid Musician Texts, ranted & raved about bass guitar, and this channel is where The Eagle has Landed.
Everything you've wanted to learn about recording Hard Rock & Heavy Metal can be found right here on this channel!
I also respond to your comments & questions: The best make it into the SMG Viewer's Comments series of videos. Loads of fun, lots of laughs.
Thanks for checking out my channel & please subscribe!

I've been a professional bassist for quite a long time, and in my experience with other "bassists", Glen's opinion on bassists is totally deserved. I've literally picked up a bass that had original strings on it...from 20 years ago...and a lot of them, particularly in the metal genre, are lackluster guitar players. Granted there are a lot of small metal bands that are all lackluster guitarists...

@@AnarchistMetalhead in high school I had been trying to learn bass for a whole year just half assing it as a 13 year old kid does. Then I met a dude that me and my bro became fast friends with. we got him into music, rock and metal specifically. His grandmother bought him a cheap ass harmony guitar (a shitty sears brand). By the end of the week he was playing Jimi Hendrix stuff perfectly. I've never seen some one pick up an instrument so fast before and never again that i knew personally. It was like a duck to water. Dude was a digital wizard (by digital I mean with his fingers). suffice to say he lit a fire under my ass. So I stopped dicking around and really learned how to play bass. Wasn't as hard as I thought at the time, when I was a small kid I had learned to read sheet music and played the recorder flute. I really do love playing bass guitar now almost 30 years later , so I don't know why I fucked around that first year after getting one. Still playing to this day loving music even if I only play for myself these days. Funny thing is my buddy I haven't spoken to in years now, and last I heard he doesn't play guitar any more.

What's up? Engineer: I think they might need to be redone. Me: Damn, something's out of tune, isn't it? Engineer: No, they got erased, sorry. Me: So you THINK they need to be redone?! Wtf? 10:52 Tip from when I was on Warner Bros: If you literally have "labels waiting on your EP", at least one of those labels will pay for you to go into a studio and record a demo. They'll want right of first refusal, and they'll bill you for it later from royalties if they sign you, but yeah. There is no such thing as a band with serious label interest who can't get a recording done without paying cash for it.

Do you have a checklist? 5: If my gear goes bonkers, is there anything suitable you have around to finish the cut? 6: Perfection is not achievable, how close do we approach it before it's not fun anymore? 7: What do we look for when you're getting upset? 8: What are the cues you use? 9: Do you accept debit cards? 10: How early is too early to arrive? 11: Is it worth bringing in tracks I recorded at home on (insert name of software here)?

By the time we got to the Sistine chapel (my kids said it should have been called the sixteenth chapel), I could no longer appreciate any more magnificence. And just think, they probably have the really valuable stuff in the off limits parts of that place, with even more in storage! saying Jesus isnt real is like saying anyone from his time that actually lived isnt real, except Jesus in one of the most documented people ever in history. +Hey There. With all due respect, you are wrong. There are absolutely zero contemporary accounts of Jesus' life. The canonical gospels were all written by anonymous Greek authors between 66 AD (that's roughly 33 years after he was supposed to have lived) to 100 AD. But they are by no means eye witness accounts. The Romans did write about Jesus' followers in the decades after he was supposed to have lived and died, and they are the first non-Biblical mentions of the so-called Christ, but they are concerned with Jesus' followers, and again we are talking 50 AD plus. Decades after he was supposed to have lived. Even when you read the Bible, Jesus is reported to be doing different things and going to and from different places in each separate Gospel. He even seems to have a different nature from one Gospel to the next. The details of what happened when his tomb is opened, who was there, and what happened next varies completely in all four gospels. And then there are the dozens of other non-canonical gospels (all written long after the supposed death and resurrection of Christ) that didn't make the cut to be included in the Bible. If you can, have a read of the Gospel according to Judas Iscariot. It's like a H.P. Lovecraft short story! It perhaps likely that there was some charismatic itinerant Rabbi or simply some radical activist wandering around the Middle East during the day that inspired the stories of the so-called Christ. Even many atheists are prepared to believe that the life of Jesus was inspired by an actual single human being who lived, but when you say that he is "one of the most documented people ever in history" I'm afraid you are incorrect. All the writings about Jesus were by people years later who never even met anybody who was even there at the time, let alone Jesus himself.

But there were also reports of people like the prophet Muhammad. The bible steals heavily from older Egyptian religions. And just overall is a terrible book to use as a reference. Jesus must have had as much impact on his time as the tiger king does today. A brief fart in the winds of time.

8:30 -- that's the thing I hate about label advances. On the one hand, the government sees it as income; however, the label sees it as a loan. You're getting fucked from both sides. So, unless the label is offering up lots of points, has the resources to push your albums, and has the wherewithal to give you artistic freedom, it's best to stay away from labels and just DIY. Regardless, you're better off incorporating your band. If you go the label route, that advance doesn't get taxed until your corporation/band starts to turn a profit. Also, when you do turn a profit, you get taxed a much lower rate than the individual rate. You'll have to wait a year before you can claim the profit as capital gains, but you can have all your living expenses covered by the corporation if you play your cards right. Oh, and when the label sues you because your band fails to recoup the advance, it won't affect you personally since the label will only be able to sue the corporation directly. And, let's not forget that you and your bandmates will have everything in writing, which will clearly define how much each person in the band will get assuming your band happens to make more than the advance. So, turn that band of yours into an LLC or C corp; after all, they call it the music business for a reason.

Affirmative.......but don't stop there.....do the same for your Record Label, and your Publishing Company as a subsidiary of your Label (Parent Co.). Apply for, and secure all your Trademarks, Copyrights, and then of course....start all those "Corporate Bank Accounts".......oh....and if your home is your Studio / Label.........then package everything (all assets) into a noice Corporate Trust (minus the band, unless you own all that too)......to which all royalties, residuals, financing, intellectual properties, real property, etc......is protected from your Bass Player's wife......I couldn't resist.

I know lots of cover bands here in Iowa. Most play for small fees and beer and honestly there are some great covers in the mix. It's not often you hear a band tackle Candlebox and Black Sabbath in the same 4 hours. They nail it until like the last half hour. The crowds are partied out and the band needs help staying vertical. But the lead singer knows how to sing and hold a mic, they all have backup instruments and the bass player changes strings every other gig. They all practice on their own and together, and sometimes ask local talent to take the stage during the headliners breaks. The headliners are only about doing a good job and having fun. Most of them work factory jobs handling metal working and do better musical works and take better care of their equipment and practice regularly, more than some of the bands you hear on the radio. It may help that two of them run a recording studio out of a tiny town, so they see the screw ups. Great fun and I regret this beverage bug flying around, I'll be missing a couple of their shows this year. Damn corona blows.

Good technique, but not the best. Former roadie and FoH guy here... try the "pinch and roll" technique some time. It's where you wind the cable without ever changing grip but constantly rolling it between your fingers to compensate for twist. Becomes second nature real quick. Bit difficult to explain but it's super fast and efficient plus you can clean the cables at the same time by running them through some alcohol wipes.

I had to look it up to know what it was and I was like ugh not that song again.....Was just an overplayed song I heard in the gym over and over and over and over like 15 years ago. There is something wrong with the music industry. I've noticed that the same songs are played all around the country despite there being zillions of "different" radio stations but the same songs same artists keep getting played and since the internet has expanded the exposure of other musicians I've discovered that there is plenty of other music of comparable or better quality that is not on the playlists of these radio stations. It's like despite pretending to be different and "local" these stations are just franchises of some giant conglomerate that forces it's will upon us while telling us it's our own will.
