The "client" in the last ad was not even remotely a douchebag. Yeah, he had no clue how much recording a 4 song EP actually costs, but he was courteous and nice about not knowing. Asking someone for contact information is not spitting in their face. Especially if the person you're asking just referred you to them. Not all idiots are douchebags.

Yeah. He was too harsh on that one, but I suspect that when he already gets so many outrageous requests, he stops distinguishing between who are the truly respectless and those who simply don't know better. I know that I myself had such moments as a musician when people wanted to hire me, though I admit that I don't feel good about myself remembering those.

Yup! Until i find a band or artist that i like more than my music I'll chase them down and do a song for free lol. Until then, I'll be over here getting better at the craft. The two metal head producers I've worked with were always paid before we even walked in the studio. Granted, I live in Shreveport LA so there rrally wasn't that many options when i was coming up. Actually, the second metalhead producer bought the first metalhead producer's equipment, so we were using the same board. I wrote the songs and also did all the vocals. I spent so much time in those studios, and that's where i learned how much work goes into production. We had some solid hangs and got some great songs out of it. It isn't as fun doing everything myself!

Dude you're so funny, it would be great to work with you, but I'm unsure if you have big enough mics, what diameterez is your mic's and if I was to hook them up to my car battery could I then get the mic recording part done for free seeming its my electricity generated by the miles I have done with my own petrol, I dont have much more money to pay you for rest of the stuff I need doing for my debut release which is gonna be SICK!! However I notice you have long hair, and I have a great hair brush, it's worth well over £40 at least. I'll even throw in a free copy of my album "legend of god" and who knows, I might even sign it for you so that in the future you can put it on ebay for millions of dollars. Oh and do you also pay for flights, I'm from the UK, and is my cat stevie aloud in the stoodio? And do you know how to fly pets over, is that extra expensive? If so I'll just go to my mate Gavin, he has a mac and garageband so I could do it there, but like I said, it would be great to work with you! Btw, my music is like metal latin hip-hop jazz fusion, I hope you can handle that!

Just my 5 cents. I fucking _love_ this generation of musicians. They are so teased by all the successful bands that they think they've got a chance too. People simply don't consider a time factor: 1. People don't buy music as good as they used to, so labels don't make as much money as back in the days. 2. There are a shitload of patterns in any genre already, so it's hard to impress listeners with your deep feelings/bad romance bullshit even if your sound is great. 3. There are so many musicians these days that it's not special anymore to be a flawless instrumentalist. Just open youtube and throw away your recently purchased electric guitar. 4. These kids don't understand that back then the musicians didn't have a lot of role models and they were honest about the things they do, it was a challenge and they had to rediscover the genre over and over to be on the top. For some of them doing music was something they weren't sure about. I've read a lot of articles about musician families, and how their parents wanted them to be managers, doctors, businessmen. They fought their way through with their talent and an amazing amount of luck. And just look at these fucking kids. They act are like they are rockstars already. Jeesh.

That's a very pessimistic way to look at things and while you're not wrong about a lot of what you said, discouraging people from the arts is a really shitty thing to do. Especially since the society we live in doesn't give two half-rotted shits about the arts in any form anymore.

***** "here are so many musicians these days that it's not special anymore to be a flawless instrumentalist. Just open youtube and throw away your recently purchased electric guitar" that? if that is your approach towards music and instrument, how can you be so fucking pessimist about it? who start playing instrument to get super famous and be superstar (you have probably mistaken it with singing), they are tons of ppl who enjoying it and dont need to be musicians proffesionally (aka earning money), no you are right! lets all ditch our equipment and instruments because there are some great musicians, worst attitude i have seen towards hobby ever

chamox3001 "The next Charlie Parker would never be discouraged" :) Im certainly not inspiring kids, who went into music because they wanted to get laid more in their lives. If you really love making music, there's nothing that could make you quit it. I personally tried to quit like 20 times already, because I had no time, I needed to focus on more important things, it was an obsticle for relationships, sitting for hours and recording stuff had a bad influence on my health, etc etc. When I went to army and I thought that Im never going to write any nice melody after such a rough life. Came back and became better than ever. You either have it or you don't. The person who has it won't be discouraged by my words, because there's nothing I can say to tear it away from him.

Regardless of the genre of the band who contacted him, they were overall incredibly flaky and out-right dumb in how they approached him in regards to their needs (immediately saying, "If you don't do x, y, and z you WON'T get paid!!" is ridiculous, regardless of your profession and if anyone told ME that, I'd tell them to kick rocks, I don't wanna do business with them anyway.

I'm not an engineer but I once had a guy come to me about starting a band saying he wanted to play rhythm guitar and sing so we could record 16 "songs" he had written, he could barely play basic chords, couldn't sing worth a shit and above all that he wanted me to put together this huge band to back him up including but not limited to: 2 guitarists, a drummer, a female vocalist, a violinist, bassist(me), a keyboardist, and a fucking DJ.

John Smith I recently had someone do this to me wanting to hire a guitar player to record songs for him. He told me he wasn't a guitar player (which is fine) but that he had his ideas about what the guitar should be doing. So I told him, send me what you've got played out on whatever instrument you play and I'll tell you if it's doable for me to record it. Turns out the guy had NOTHING and wanted a guitar player to WRITE and TRACK all of his "songs" for him, while receiving "good compensation" for what he was only advertising as needing just a guitar player. I told him to kick rocks, I wasn't going to write AND play MY parts for his "songs" and that maybe he should re-word his advertisement as it was severely mis-leading.

Chuck Costello This. This was the reason I had to stop playing with an old buddy of mine. He would constantly tell me we needed to start a band, which I was all for, but when It came time to do the work I was the one loaded with the creative process. It eventually reached a point where he would occasionally show up to practice and ask what he was supposed to sing. I felt so bad because he was a really good guy and I wanted him to have a creative input but he simply brought nothing to the table and nobody in the band had the heart to kick him since we were all good friends.

I do completely understand why you get annoyed by these texts, you are just trying to make a living and any band who have been around long enough should understand that. Although I am a bit worried that some people who are only starting out are getting scared away from trying to record. Obviously recording isn't easy, it takes a lot of practice and time, as well dedication and that's before you even get into the studio. When I recorded my album I was definitely not where I should have been practice wise but I've learned from that mistake, sometimes you need to face these things to fully understand how much work it takes. I think personally people starting out should start off trying to record their own demos at home, if you want something just to get an idea of what you want to do. It's not that difficult or expensive and these people starting off can maybe begin to understand the amount of work engineers/producers do. I know this was a long comment but it's just something I wanted to add. I want to say as well I love your videos they are both informative and amusing.

Had one a couple of weeks ago that came to me (an engineer) with an out of tune acoustic guitar and sloppy out of tune vocals. She wanted all other instruments WRITTEN for her plus recorded, mixed and mastered for a mere 60 quid. Because I was absolutely skint at the time, I took the job but wanted £100 from her as she was clearly no millionaire and also I'm nice. Oh and there was a time limit of around 4 days for all this to be finished. And as another side note, she had no idea how to play to a click track, so all these virtual instruments I had to do for her were tediously positioned in her version of time. So basically I have to turn shit into gold with a time limit of 4 days. So I did everything, wrote, recorded, mixed and mastered all 4 tracks for her, even kept her up to date throughout with sound clips, screen shots, the lot. When it came time to hand over the money (through skype) she didn't trust me to give her the product (via Dropbox) I'd been tirelessly working on for days. She wanted her songs first before she paid me and also wanted to give me £80 instead of the agreed £100. I must have spent about 2-3 hours from about midnight to 3am convincing her to send me the full amount of money before she FINALLY did it. Safe to say I won't be working with her again. Fucking "musicians."

Okay not to start a major religious argument on KZbin because it's fucking stupid and a waste of everyone's time BUT the way you constantly bash others who believe differently is obnoxious and irritating at times. Science is just as much a belief as any religion as far as the origin of life is concerned. Not expecting any major apology or anything because you don't need to give one but if you could just tone down the religious bashing a bit I'd appreciate it. Love the videos anyway!

Fact: If you are in a band and want to play different places, with many different bands, you NEED to have solid recordings. Whether it's 2-3 songs or and entire album. It needs to have time and money put into it. And recording costs some descent money. (just stop going out to restaurants and bars for a couple months and the whole band could totally afford expensive studio time! Most bands are 4-5 people. If you can't get that kind of money together between that many people who are trying to 'make it happen' you are wasting your time!) Yes, music sales aren't going well, especially for new bands, but an album is like your new "business card" It's your product, literally what you are selling to the public. If people and promoters like your product, they will book your and you will make some money if you keep at it. And getting heard by people opens up new possibilities for income as a musician...ex: can charge more for your time with lessons, sponsorships etc.

He also acted in the backing vocals me: Do you see?? Using the pan i can emulate the position that you place yourself while you sing. Vocal director: Well, sounds nice, but i could not let pass that my voice is being heard only in the left monitor: Me: Yeah, thats the idea, have you heard how it sounds cleaner, and more spacial?? Its just like yourselves are side by side singing for me. Vocal director: well, i´m just worryed about what would happen if someone in a mono player or someone with a malfunctioning speaker hears this recording. Will my voice be heard?? You know, there is lots of my work, sweat and tears on it. It is heartbraking to know that in some ocasions I will not be heard.

I recorded a 4-song demo for a horrible 3-piece one time, and the guitarist insisted on tracking with his Line 6 spider 15 combo amp. On top of that, he refused to play to a click. He said it makes the music sound "mechanical," and literally described himself as a "non-conformist." He wasn't a terrible guitarist, but he had absolutely no concept of tone, and was a total diva. The vocalist was a real piece of work too. He had absolutely no idea how to properly use his voice, and had to take several hours-long breaks between songs, and even in the middle of one song, to rest his voice, because he was literally destroying it with the awful screaming he was doing. The drummer was the only one who actually had some concept of what was going on, and it was really a pleasure to work with him. After guitars, vocals, and drums were tracked, they asked me to lay down bass guitar tracks, because they'd seen me play bass in the band that I was in at that time. The tempo of all the songs was all over the place, and I couldn't figure out anything to do with any of the songs. It's a wonder that the drummer could play along with them at all. The songs still turned out okay, and apparently the band was approached by some local label for a record deal. I don't know if they ever got the deal, and I don't care. I wouldn't wish their band upon any recording engineer, ever.

I had to deal with a Christian Band just like that, The only reason I agreed to record them was because I needed the money. Dealing with there "Holier Then Thou" attitude, Tardiness, refusal to pay, and just overall disrespect for me and my studio, it ended up biting me in the ass... I learned a really valuable lesson from them though. Don't do business with people just for the money, it takes all the fun out of it, and secondly don't do Business with assholes who think that if they pray before each session/take it'll actually make them play better... But it never did.... SpectreSoundStudios thanks for posting these videos they're funny as hell!

The difference is, they didn't waste their time or their clients' confidence by unprofessionally complaining about it publicly. Because the biggest issue is the lack of a cashflow in the whole business. You always find people who exchange services or be willing to do you a favor by hoping you return it someday - but no one can pay the other to make a living. The music business is no business anymore. It's amateur hobby shit. I'm sorry to say that, but it is how it is. Try to make your money with something else to avoid more trouble in your life. I've heard the gaming business is a good place for former music folks.

Also, bear in mind, I grew up in the 80s, where I had to listen to preachers spewing all sorts of nonsense about metal being "evil." Any respect I had for religion went into the garbage back then. Excuse me if I throw a few insults at Christianity. But I promise I will never, EVER burn someone at the stake for having different beliefs. Unfortunately, your religion can't make that same claim.

After laying down the tracks i did a couple of guitar solo takes. The "engineer" deleted the exact solo i wanted to have on a song ,put another take on it. The "engineer" spend half the time (that i pay in advance) trying to convince me of his personal musical tastes and opinions. After this terrible recording experience i waited for 3 months and finally i got a product which could not be listened to. It was my sheer will not to punch this guy's face in . Hey thanks for your videos. Love them all An idea for a video, why do you do a breakdown on what is the process to do a song recorded?, This more aimed to new bands. Not everyone had have the experience to go into a studio yet and they dont really know what does it require to do a full recording. Hence why some bands are so cheap as they cant understand why a 3:00 min song, (even re-played or re-recorded lets say 5 times or 15min in their heads) cost that much.... Like why does it take to record that long. And what they can do to optimize the process. Apart from the tips you have already said in the past like having new strings, memorize or at least have parts writedown, gear worth to record etc. Like what else they can do to make the recording process quicker (cheaper for them). Do they need a tempo, a demo song to play along wiht a click track?, gear list? maybe this could help to young beginer bands to know the why it cost money and it takes that long to record?
@BetoxSound
@BetoxSound 9 жыл бұрын
I know there are "tips" to made the recording process quicker. Like my keyboard player for example used to record his parts in his house using a live playtrough recording MIDI, waste hours at home getting it perfect, then at the studio was a matter to play the MIDI tracks back trough the keyboard into the studio recording setup and done. Studio time it only took him what the song duration per instruments he did. also like once the drum track was recorded, take a demo of that with a click track, Id then practice the song at home with that CD so I could come to the studio latter to record bass. Once done we would take a Cd with just drums and bass and a click track, gave to the guitar player so he practice the song, etc. That help us to nail the takes quicker as we were practicing with what we were gonna hear on the studio, and not just a "band practice"
@UncleChuzz
@UncleChuzz 9 жыл бұрын
Lay out all your songs to a click ahead of time (yeah this requires some work and tempo mapping in the DAW of your choice) and learn to play them to the click. That's really all you can do. Know your songs backwards and forwards and be as cooperative with the engineer as you can. If you're recording a song, you should be focused on how good it's going to sound, not how quickly you can get outta there. Don't go in to record unless you're financially and musically up for the task, plain and simple.
@BetoxSound
@BetoxSound 9 жыл бұрын
***** yeah Im full aware of it, I have been playing for 15 years, record a few times. I even went to audio engineering school too, and a little time experience as a recording engineer before I change paths. But I must say I never though of the practicing the songs at a faster click. I always do to practice hard songs on bass or to learn guitar solos but never though to use it as a tool for recording, thanks. I know that the idea is not to go as quick as you can on a recording. But the quicker you record your takes, the less money you spend. And for a new starting band with no much money to do so (like it seems in all those text), they could benefit from a "quick" session. This is just for bands who just want to record a song. Not for bands who want a full production input, or to use the studio as a writing session tool. Some ppl (bands) dont seem to have a clear idea on the time consuming, money required to record and mix. Having a good breakdown of the process could help them to understand bit better before they get mad because you dont record their 4 min song for 100$. And having some good "tips" before they go into the studio it could save them lots of $$$ and actually have a finish product

They should be giving you thanks because I am sure they have sold quite a few copies, including the one I am purchasing today. I saw the plugin a little while back, but I didn't fully understand it until I saw your video; so, I thank you for that! Have you checked out their other plugin called Auto Align? It is a killer plugin that can easily fix phase issues between tracks (such as two guitars or a snare to the overheads). You would definitely dig it, and using it line with drum leveler will only make the mixes more dominant and fix the phase issues a lot faster than doing it the "old school" way! Check it out! And thanks again for the videos, you rock.

Great video, as always :D Glenn, I need your honest opinion. I'm guitar/bass player who has started writing songs and I want to start making some 'early demos' (so far we are just 2 guitarists, so no drummer) and this is the gear I got: - Tascam DP-32sd Portastudio (which I am using a lot since my laptop died) - Pair of KRK Rokit 5 monitors - A proper tuned guitar, POD HD (for FX) and a 50w Tube Amp - Shure beta 58a for vocals - Shure SM57 for guitar (still checking how good is the cab sim output on the amp) I understand you might have no experience with an all-in-one mixer as the Portastudio but it seems to have everything I used on Reaper (except for the plugins, sure). Any pointers?

I was a recording engineer in my city for six years, and I can't count the number of times I had to play musicians' instruments for them simply because they couldn't. Also, in that six years I've never actually encountered a musician that didn't try to stiff me on the bill. I got out of it when I almost had to take a band to court for a $2000 studio bill. It's not worth it. Being a recording engineer is like perpetually trying to to get blood from a stone and arguing with people all day everyday. For anyone looking to get into the field, please be honest with yourself - if you can't handle stupidity, don't become a recording engineer. I don't care if you think it's your dream. If you can't handle stupidity, walk away from the idea right now.

Back in 1988, I was the engineer and in-house studio musician at a 24 track analog studio in NYC. One day a guy named Mike (a big guy who looked like he belonged to a certain Italian-American subculture,,,) bought some studio time to executive produce a kiddie-pop singer I'll call Cindy. He hired a very talented keyboardist I'll call Dave to produce a single. Cindy was a very pretty young woman. The plan was to record basic rhythm tracks, a scratch vocal track, and a rough mix. The next stages would be done later. Mike left, and Dave did the tracks. He nailed everything perfectly. Very professional. Cindy's vocals were competent, but unremarkable. Then we did a rough mix, which I recorded to cassette (hey; this was 1988). Mike returned to check on our progress. We had actually achieved the objectives of the session. We played the mix from the multitrack. Mike said "Well, it sounds OK, but I think we can do better." So, he starts playing with the faders and EQ on the console. Meters are slamming into the red, tracks are distorting, nothing is making sense. He said "Alright, it sounds a little better. But it's not really what I wanted." So, with a wink to Dave, I said "Hey Mike; give this a listen." I played the cassette of the exact same mix he wasn't happy with. He said "That's what it should have been the first time!" At least he paid his bills.
