I worked for ten years in the private banking industry in South Africa- that's when I learnt that it's the global financial and banking system, not the global economy- which is the root cause of poverty and homelessness. Scottish banks should be nationalized and run for the benefit of Scottish citizens, not for the benefit of private share-holders. This way, funds can be created by the national bank to help all these desperate people by way of food vouchers, rent payments, and medical payments, until they get back on their feet.

That the single mother in the beginning expressly points out that none of her furniture was bought new is very telling to me. All of my furniture was acquired second hand, and I consider myself lucky for it, not poor. This really denotes a strange, eternally dissatisfied mindset to me. Because what difference does it make? A previously used chair, table, wardrobe, sofa, kettle etc etc will serve you the exact same, and fulfill the exact same functions. How lucky for them, and me, to be living in a country where really rather nice discarded stuff can be had used for very, very cheap or even free. To then whinge about this fact, rather than to feel lucky for it is where she lost me.

@@boosadie9 yes, I know. I don't understand many of their choices. In my life I ve been periodically quite poor, way below the breadline, and fairly flush, and i really adjusted my life choices accordingly, and it ended up being not that bad. If I didn't have a house and garden to myself, a stable source of income, and, foreseeably, a lot of spare time to walk the dog for years to come, or an even better income to pay for someone to walk my dog twice a day, lengthily, and be paid 30 quid for it per day, while I m at work, I wouldn't get one.

@JL H but don't they get social benefits? If they can supplement that with food from foodbanks, it's not that bad. And every type of clothes can be bought second hand, for very, very little money, all sizes, and for all weather conditions and types of situations, trust me.
@Wandering.Homebody
@Wandering.Homebody 3 жыл бұрын
@JL H pretty much my point exactly. To get free used stuff and then whinge about it like it's a bad thing strikes me as incredibly poor, somehow, like I said. It's the physical reality of things, coupled with a certain mindset.

Who cares if it's 2 years before COVID? She's a parent. It's her duty to think of the future. Why wasn't she saving that money when she was making it? Why wasn't she investing it to send her kids to uni? Why wasn't she living on a budget and looking for ways to reduce expenses when times were good? I've been doing that since 2013 and I'm only 30. Being stupid with money isn't an excuse. Now their futures are down the toilet because their mother wasn't responsible or thinking about their futures.

Living pay check to pay check leaves NO ROOM for this. Come on have a speck of empathy left for these people. It’s the least you can do. A friend of mine was at the age of 41 was told that he was not an official citizen of Scotland due to him being born in the US and moved to Scotland with his family at age 2. The reason why was that his mother didn’t register him correctly. He was educated in Scotland. Had a mortgage on a flat in Glasgow that he had been paying for years and was always working until the government issued the SIA badge that was required for him to be a security guard. He was left for about 2 years with no way to make money while the Scottish government dragged their feet on the problem and when the issue was finally resolved he had to then find a new way to make a living as they would not allow him to apply for an SIA badge. Point being, the current government ran by Nicola Sturgeon are completely incompetent and do not care for nothing more than Twitter likes and support from areas of the country they do not effect. Ask anyone in the south side of Glasgow if they like Nicola Sturgeon or the SNP and the answer will be 90% no. Sad petty country ran by sad petty people.

Poverty is like a spectrum of you think of it. Some who is homeless is probably at the bottom of the spectrum and people who are on benefits and managing to get by but with no money at the end of bills and food would be at the top of poverty line if that makes sense. The lower down the scale you go the worse it gets. Some people are going to bed without eating. My mum would have one meal a day at my home. She wouldn’t eat until 9pm st night. I’d say that is poverty.

Want to know what poverty is, then come to Africa or South Africa. In South Africa there is not such thing as benefits or food banks. If you don't work you starve, and thanks to the government and their lockdown , thousands of working class people have lost their jobs, their homes, its not just the person who lost their job that suffers but the entire family and in some cases extended family as well. How do you explain to a child who is crying because they are hungry , that there is no money to buy food. BUT the government officials and political are still living in the lap of luxury. They haven't lost their job and their homes because of covid lockdown.

I don't understand how these parents saying they go without. Toast is only 45p in teaco and you can't buy that weekly on benefit and have a slice or two? This is bs, feeding 8 kids 3 meals is easy wouldn't be healthy tho. Toast breakfast, lunch cereals, pasta for dinner or frozen pizza shop own brand, may not taste good but its something. Frozen veg is cheap, eggs are cheap. Porridge is dead cheap and you can fill up on it and feel full. Even having 4 slices of toast with butter is cheap with milk mixed with water to make it more skimmed. As a teenager 15yrs ago, I went through this when I got disowned by my family living in a hostel. Now I'm 33 I've turned my life around, studied hard, I'm living comfortably with my son and partner. Poverty is a lifestyle choice due to poor decisions. Wanting the latest tech, smoking, drinking, drugs and buying fast food instead of cooking meals. How many have the internet, the latest phones, tattoos and the cost of pets? I grew up with nothing. My dad worked hard to bring up 3 children without the help from government. No food banks and no benefits. We managed on our own and made better choices and pulled ourselves out of poverty. Try and help yourselves and don’t blame everyone else for your position in life.

The breakdown of the so-called "traditional family unit" is a product of modern capitalism not an individual's decisions. For most of human history families have gotten by with one (usually male) breadwinner. It became almost impossible to raise children without two incomes after the crisis of capitalism in the 1960-70s.

After watching the video and reading the comments, I came to realise it is not the patriarchal nor individual human rights issues that plague such societies, but the lack of personal responsibility each individual exhibits in the collective that throws a monkey wrench in the proposed system. You cannot want something while doing a different thing, then expecting it or somebody else to get it right for you! The health of a collective system is not led by the leadership; it is dictated by each individual acting in synchrony to a collectively agreed plan. The government does not lead, but conduct an orchestra of individuals who must be responsible to play their individual parts in synchrony to the others, as agreed collectively. Imagine an orchestra made up of soloists, whose main objective is to express their individuality... the conductor is then made redundant and the music rubbish.

I'm just not sure if (1) people really need materialistic things and (2) should we allow people to have as many kids as they want. We should end child poverty, but not sure if that means more money especially if the parents are the ones who are in control of that money. Some parents make their kids' well-being a priority, while others don't - that's just the truth.

When thatcher started to allow the sale of council houses ( it was a big vote winner ) i think housing officials would have forseen thst it would create big problems to come. Industry shutting down but nothing coming to replace it leaving communities gradually going downhill. Its taken 20,30,40 years for the full impact of these problems to show.
