In 1993, Bret was rumored to fight Warrior at Rumble and Hogan at Summerslam, but neither match happened.
@stevepmg92023 жыл бұрын
Bret says he wanted to work Warrior in 93 (for Mania, he envisaged) according to his book. I never read anyone else spin that. Him and Hogan was more than rumoured, Vince told Bret that was the plan and they shot publicity photos for it. Leading to KOTR Hogan told Bret that his deal was always to lose to Yoko, and when Bret confronted Vince in front of Hogan, Vince denied ever promising Hogan would be losing to him. According to Brets book.

Hennig should gave taken the strap from Flair in late ‘92 (and beat Flair again in career ending match at RR ‘93) and then lost to Bret at WM. Think how great their KOTR match was and how much more they could have done in a Mania main event. Would likely have been one of the greatest matches of all time.

"Before I give my Maniac’s some behind the scene scoops on how my Run came to an end in 93 which made me truly believe my career was over. Before I say any more on the matter, I’ll just say that I wanted to stay on the top and believed Hulkamania had a lot more in its gas tank but sometimes our ego’s get the best of us. As I’ve said in prior interviews Vince & myself have always seen eye to eye on most things. Seldomly we had disagreements and even when I disagreed, I’d always remain professional about it and do what was asked and take up my complaint after the fact like professionals do. Some guys pulled no-shows and some even took their ball & went home while screwing the company that made them as well as the fans who loved them; all for their misperception of thinking “they” are their own bosses or some other delusional thought process. Becoming a Superstar takes thousands and sometimes even millions of dollars and hundreds of people behind the scenes to make you have your very own marketable Brand. Why anyone would ever feel they were screwed or not feel a direction of their character was good enough for them or whatever is just mind-blowing to me! Wake-up call, you wouldn’t have your own Brand, exposure and popularity if it wasn’t for the company who made you. That being said, direction of my character wasn’t going the way I liked and since my contract was for a few extra years, I didn’t have much of a leg to stand on but remained professional and in late 1992 I had several conversations with Vince in regards to the direction of Hulkamania. We both knew it was still the hottest Wrestler Brand on the market by far but he felt it reached a plateau; which was hard to hear at the time but understood but respectfully disagreed. At the time, my in-ring career was slowed down a lot and I did other projects like filming Mr. Nanny and various public relation & community out-reach work for the WWE all around the country. Storyline-wise, not much was on forefront and Hulkamnia was beginning to be shelved. I took this opportunity of not only being used not the way I wanted but simply not being used period to re-open discussions of Hulkamnia’s future. Vince had his mind made up and so did I and since we are like two stubborn brothers bull headed and banging heads, only to get headaches instead of budging. Even though I felt like I had a lot more to offer and didn’t want to leave the fans, I asked out of my contract since the writing on the wall (so to speak) seemed inevitable to retire anyways. Suprisingly Vince agreed and we began to plan for Hulkamania’s departure and to pass the torch once again. At the time it HAD to be Bret Hart or Yokozuna. Bret Hart was in his first year being main event status and he clearly proved his dedication to the business and dominated the Tag Team division throughout the 80’s and the IC division for a few years and was just an amazing performer. His work ethic was off the charts and he clearly began to have a following that enabled him to not only be the face of the company but carry the torch successfully. Yokozuna on the other hand didn’t nearly pay his dues like the Hitman did but came in as an overwhelming force that shot him up to main event status almost overnight. Yoko was working a program with this hitman already and Vince & I knew we could get not only get a few extra bucks out of one last Hulkamania Run but also knew Hulkamnia could be instrumental in setting up the next guy. I was leaning more towards Bret… so much in-fact we did some photo-shoots for a possible feud and even doing a tug of war with the belt looked awesome while seeing the pictures afterwards. However, Bret was a Babyface (good guy) and so was I. The only time a Babyface vs Babyface happened on a grand level thus far was at WM6 which caused a split crowd and even though it was awesome, it kept the crowd divided afterwards. Having a Heel (bad guy) beat the Babyface or vice-versa has always been the traditional format. In addition, Bret was just now beginning to be a major player and to have him go against Hulkamania with the risk of him generating heat over it didn’t make much sense. Just look at Wrestlemania 18, I went against the Rock as a bad guy and even though he was a good guy, the people booed him and pretty much turned him heel in that match if you watch it. Not wanting to put a damper on Bret’s raise to the top, it was decided that Yoko would beat the Hitman at Wrestlemania 9 and prove himself to be unstoppable and have me come out to win beat Yoko on a whim and take the title from him to become the Champ for the last time and enjoy my final Run; which happened. In this process, it did put Bret on the back burner, but allowed Yokozuna to gain even more heat with the crowd and more established Yoko by giving him the credentials under his belt when defeating me at King of the Ring 1993… This not only eventually gave Bret Hart center stage as the main guy, but a great Heel to work with and no one had to share the spotlight with Hulkamnia anymore. This was my last match in WWE for nearly 10 years. After Yokozuna won against me, if that wasn’t enough he squashed me like a pancake brothers; which made for an easy & believable send off for me. Vince was happy with the way I put over Yoko and whoever beat Yoko in following years had the bragging rights to say they did what Hulk Hogan couldn’t; so it all made sense. WWE had the perfect bad guy that killed Hulkamania and I got out of my contract to pursue other projects, primarily Thunder in Paradise. I would say enjoy this video of that was believed to be Hulkamania’s last match in 1993 but… knowing the beating I took against this big man." - Hulk Hogan Deleted website blog, February 17, 2015
@TheFreeSkate4 жыл бұрын
Bret would have had heat he says? LMAO. Bret had more fan mail then Hogan in 1992. Hogan was being booed in 1991 for pete sakes...he would not have been the heavily cheered in this match. Most of us all turned to Bret Hart for new guy, left hogan in early 1991...he was stale. It was to much same ol' promos and matches. Where in the heck does Hogan think he would been so cheered? THEN they discover Hogan wasn't on that tour but was on the late summer tour. Now Conrad laughs that Hogan didn't have the belt then. This actually proves Prichard's memory 100% right - they SALES would be in April, May and June - just like Prichard said.

That question about "What could have been?" If they had gone with Bruce's plan to have Scott Steiner win the Rumble and main event Mania is very interesting. At that point the Steiners had peaked as a team and weren't quite the same in WWF as in WCW. Then when you consider how bad Scott's 2002-03 singles run was, he would have had a much better chance of success as a singles in 93.
@cptnmrgnkid6 жыл бұрын
Bored Now I disagree. He needed the Big Poppa Pump gimmick to really be a top star. Without it he was just another guy who wrestled.
@borednow58386 жыл бұрын
Don't forget the early 90s was a different time for wrestling. Part of the drawback might have been if the WWF fans wouldn't have known Steiner from his WCW. But he still had one hell of a look, a decent promo and could go in the ring. I think Bruce's idea at least for a short term run might have worked.
@cretinousjester34756 жыл бұрын
Bored Now: The scenario of a "reverse" of what had been a staple of WWF may have happened. If he had, he might have been a great heel to Bret. He had the look Vince loved but he could wrestle with competence comparable to Hennig. Add in Luger and you'd have Bret going up against heels who were bigger, stronger, etc. Bret could have a match with anyone so the draw would be to see him triumph against these "supermen".

Flair, then we had April with the shows I just mentioned. Then in August, they came back again and THAT was the tour with Hogan that they are talking about on the podcast. Bizarrely, Hogan was the champion v. Yoko and won by DQ every night. He was champion and had the belt with him, even though he lost the belt 3 months earlier to Yoko at King of the Ring. @@thunercattt6018 or people who actually look at the numbers. I dont blame Bret specifically, but business was down when Bret took over and stayed down. Whether it was him, Diesel, Shawn or Taker being the face of the company, business was struggling until Stone Cold came around.

@@robgbaby Figures actually went up when Sid got the title off Shawn. The product was improving in general by this point but that's when the figures improved. 1997 was Bret's only high drawing reign, same with Undertaker and Shawns that same year. Then when Austin got the title off Shawn figures exploded. As much as I like Shaun, him losing the title seemed to always win numbers.

Hogan was huge in Canada and the UK. He drew more there than Bret could ever dream. If you're going to state a point, damn, state it with tangible points.

I don’t know why people think that was in Caesars’ parking lot? That was at the outdoor stadium that all the major prize fights were held. It was actually a big deal for them to get in there as that venue only hosted boxing events...Mike Tyson, Oscar De La Hoya, etc. it was the venue of the infamous 1993 boxing match between Evander Holyfield and Riddick Bowe where a parachuter landed in the ring during the fight

I understand people saying Bret was a "mark" but I can see him feeling that a win over Hogan would be huge for his career. The problem is that Bret probably thought he was going to get cheered over Hogan. It wasnt going to happen.

Basically what Bruce is saying that, tickets had been sold, but could be bought again by WWE and resold at a much higher price with Hogan as champion.

I loved this WrestleMania because of the surprise at the end. I didn’t know as a 6 year old kid it was Hogan politics but the ending proved that “Anything can happen in the World Wrestling Federation” Undertaker match was garbage the only thing good about that match was the fan that flicked off Giant in the background. Michaels and Tatanka and the Steiners vs the Head Shrinkers stole the show. Doing vs Crush was good The Hogan tag team match was alright. Luger vs Perfect was a classic.

Hogan was a knee jerk reaction on how bad business was in 1993. I would have had Yoko keep the belt and have a decent run with it. Vince always loved Hogan in the mid to late 80s and early 90s. Wrestlemania 9 was a weird mania to watch. 9 did feel like a transition mania. I think most of us would have been happy with Yoko leaving as champion.
@TheWildCur6 жыл бұрын
Joseph Boza The belt changed to promote a European tour. Hogan would definitley draw more internationally, than Yokozuna. Bret would become a huge star internationally, but he wasnt quite there yet.

@@josephboza7448 he didn’t say that he wanted to raise ticket prices. He said that he wanted to add value to the tickets that were already sold. So that maybe the customers would buy more tickets to more events down the road. So that the customer can think to themselves “wow I bought a ticket for X amount of dollars thinking that Hogan wasn’t going to be there and I show up at Hogan ends up being there. So I got a great deal.”
@RealAlphaDrum3 жыл бұрын
I don't think Conrad is getting the concept of added value. Added value doesn't mean charging more for tickets, even after the fact. You don't charge people twice for a ticket. It isn't added value for the WWF in terms of adding more gate dollars. it means giving people more bang for their buck, who already paid, by adding Hogan to the tour. What is so hard to understand about that Conrad?
@Plainview-tu7xn Жыл бұрын
Agreed. You can't do Hulk vs. Bret. Bret was over, but not enough to get cheered over Hogan.. And Bret would have never had got a bigger win. Any accomplishment after beating Hulk would be small in comparison.
